Book Science Based Stockpile Stewardship and RIA

Download or read book Science Based Stockpile Stewardship and RIA written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One aspect of Science Based Stockpile Stewardship (SBSS) is to improve the quality of neutron cross section data for certain isotopes. The isotopes of interest are used to monitor neutron and charged particle fluxes in environments of brief, intense neutron fluxes. The accuracy of flux determination is dependent on the accuracy of cross section data for the stable isotopes loaded into the system and the unstable isotopes produced when the neutrons are incident on the monitor. For isotopes with a half-life greater than one day it is possible, given the production rates of RIA, to make radioactive targets for neutron irradiation. This would require the ability to harvest isotopes at RIA, an onsite radiochemistry facility for processing the harvested material into a target, and an onsite neutron source facility. The radiochemistry facility will need to handle activity levels on the order of 100's of Curie's while the neutron source facility will need to provide high intensity ''monoenergetic'' neutrons from 10's keV to 20 MeV. For isotopes with a half-life much less than one day, only indirect methods can be used to get information on the neutron cross sections because of the lack of a target. Both experimental techniques will be discussed with their impact on the infrastructure at RIA, as well as the general case for the interest of SBSS in RIA.

Book Stockpile Stewardship Program Strategy

Download or read book Stockpile Stewardship Program Strategy written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In announcing the extension of the moratorium on nuclear testing, President Clinton reaffirmed the importance of maintaining confidence in the enduring U.S. nuclear stockpile: ''To assure that our nuclear deterrent remains unquestioned under a test ban, we will explore other means of maintaining our confidence in the safety, reliability, and performance of our weapons.'' To this end, the Department of Energy's nuclear weapon program is undergoing fundamental change--from advancing military characteristics to maintaining the reliability and safety of the existing stockpile. Consequently, a new strategy was needed to meet these new mission requirements. This report summarizes the new strategy. The fundamental premise of the new strategy lies in the ability to respond to problems in monitoring and maintaining the existing stockpile by preserving specialized facilities, maintaining the skill and knowledge bases, and advancing our understanding of nuclear weapon physics necessary to manage the nuclear future in an era without nuclear testing. The foundation of this Science-based Stockpile Stewardship strategy was laid at a workshop attended by DOE officials, DoD customers, stakeholders from other government agencies, nuclear weapon experts, and members of the scientific community. The principles of the evolving strategy were regularly discussed during the formative stages with the primary customers and stakeholders and reviewed by the JASONs. This report summarizes the strategy as it now exists, but we recognize that stockpile stewardship must be a continuing process--updated as necessary to respond to national security objectives.

Book Stockpiles Stewardship Program

Book excerpt: Nuclear weapons, while simple in principle, are technically complex devices with a multitude of components. There may be concern that, over time, a weapon¿s ability could decline unless mitigating precautions are taken. To coordinate our ability to maintain the nation¿s existing nuclear weapons, the Nat. Nuclear Security Agency developed a Stockpile Stewardship Program (SSP). Three major components of SSP are seriously over budget & seriously behind schedule. Contents: A Brief Review of the Origins of Nuclear Testing; The CTBT & the Birth of the Science-Based Stockpile Stewardship Program; The Scientific Tools, or ¿Three Pillars,¿ of SSP; SSP¿s Newer Tools: JASPER & the Z Machine; & Conclusions, SSP 15 Years On. Illustrations.

Book Scientific Opportunities with a Rare Isotope Facility in the United States

Download or read book Scientific Opportunities with a Rare Isotope Facility in the United States written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-05-09 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over ten years ago, U.S. nuclear scientists proposed construction of a new rare isotope accelerator in the United States, which would enable experiments to elucidate the important questions in nuclear physics. To help assess this proposal, DOE and NSF asked the NRC to define the science agenda for a next-generation U.S. Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB). As the study began, DOE announced a substantial reduction in the scope of this facility and put off its initial operation date by several years. The study focused on an evaluation of the science that could be accomplished on a facility reduced in scope. This report provides a discussion of the key science drivers for a FRIB, an assessment of existing domestic and international rare isotope beams, an assessment of the current U.S. position about the FRIB, and a set of findings and conclusions about the scientific and policy context for such a facility.

Book New Projects And Lines Of Research In Nuclear Physics Proceedings Of The International Symposium

Download or read book New Projects And Lines Of Research In Nuclear Physics Proceedings Of The International Symposium written by Giovanni Fazio and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2003-07-14 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This symposium was held in honour of Yuri Oganessian for his laurea honoris causa conferred by the University of Messina, and to celebrate Giorgio Giardina's 60th birthday. The aim of the symposium was to focus on the new projects and new lines of research in nuclear physics that will be developed in the main laboratories and research centres during the next 10-20 years. The main emphasis was on the discussion (from both the experimental and theoretical viewpoints) of properties of nuclei under extreme conditions (at large mass numbers, at large isospin, at high temperature, and at nuclear densities far from equilibrium), by investigating nuclear collisions from low to relativistic energies. This proceedings volume is a collection of all the invited talks of the plenary sessions and oral contributions given by the speakers at the parallel sessions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most spectacular consequences of the description of the superfluid condensate in superfluid He or in superconductors as a single macroscopic quantum state is the quantization of circulation, resulting in quantized vortex lines. This book draws no distinction between superfluid He3 and He4 and superconductors. The reader will find the essential introductory chapters and the most recent theoretical and experimental progress in our understanding of the vortex state in both superconductors and superfluids, from lectures given by leading experts in the field, both experimentalists and theoreticians, who gathered in Cargèse for a NATO ASI. The peculiar features related to short coherence lengths, 2D geometry, high temperatures, disorder, and pinning are thoroughly discussed.
