Book Science and the Supernatural Classic Reprint

Download or read book Science and the Supernatural Classic Reprint written by Augustus Jay du Bois and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-19 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Science and the Supernatural In the language of Frederic Harrison, one of the foremost positivists of the day, This method turns aside from hypotheses not to be tested by any known logical canon familiar to science, whether the hypothesis claims support from intuition, aspira tion or general plausibility. And, again, this method turns aside from ideal standards which avow them selves to be lawless, which profess to transcend the field of law. We say, life and conduct shall stand for us wholly on a basis of law, and must rest entirely in that region of science, (not physical, but moral and social science, ) where we are free to use, our intelligence in the methods known to us as ih telligible logic, methods which the intellect can analyze. When you confront us with hypotheses however sublime and however affecting, if they can nbt be stated in terms of the rest of our knowledge, if they are disparate to that world of sequence and sensation which to us is the ultimate base of all our real knowledge, then we shake our heads and turn aside. It has demanded universal do main. Religion has refused to be included on the same plane as other knowledge, and science has retaliated by either ignoring it or denying its validity. Book Supernatural Entertainments

Download or read book Supernatural Entertainments written by Simone Natale and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2016-03-31 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Supernatural Entertainments, Simone Natale vividly depicts spiritualism’s rise as a religious and cultural phenomenon and explores its strong connection to the growth of the media entertainment industry in the nineteenth century. He frames the spiritualist movement as part of a new commodity culture that changed how public entertainments were produced and consumed. Starting with the story of the Fox sisters, considered the first spiritualist mediums in history, Natale follows the trajectory of spiritualism in Great Britain and the United States from its foundation in 1848 to the beginning of the twentieth century. He demonstrates that spiritualist mediums and leaders adopted many of the promotional strategies and spectacular techniques that were being developed for the broader entertainment industry. Spiritualist mediums were indistinguishable from other professional performers, as they had managers and agents, advertised in the press, and used spectacularism to draw audiences. Addressing the overlap between spiritualism’s explosion and nineteenth-century show business, Natale provides an archaeology of how the supernatural became a powerful force in the media and popular culture of today.

Book Planchette Or the Despair of Science Classic Reprint

Download or read book Planchette Or the Despair of Science Classic Reprint written by Epes Sargent and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Planchette or the Despair of Science You anticipate that the child born this year will see in his generation our men of science become reverent believers in the supernatural of the Scrip tures. In the facts I here present, you will find some reasons for this opinion; but you will also learn that there are persons who admit the phe momena, but denounce Spiritualism as a nervous epidemic, based on a gigantic assumption, and propping an ancient superstition, namely, that of individual spirits! So, you see, there will be work still for the Spiritualists, even when the facts are generally accepted, as they are likely to be within the next quarter of a century. For portions of this volume, I can claim no other merit than that of a compilation. Some of it, however, is compiled from past publications of my own. For what I have adopted from others I have endeavored to give credit, except where the purely narrative form of the matter seemed not to require it, or its source could not be traced. Book The Supernatural Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Supernatural Classic Reprint written by A. Carman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-02-15 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Supernatural Christianity is the masterpiece of God, the paramount moral and spiritual design, and the crowning glory of the Infinite and Eternal Creator and Maker of all things. Christianity in its essential unity and central energy is supernatural; it is that, or it is a stupendous fraud. The Christian religion, peculiarly separate from other religions, is a system distinguished and dominated by the supernatural, or it is at once an insidious and vexa tious delusion. It deals with God and moral responsi bility, and with the life and souls and destiny of men. It is an orderly arrangement; and a firm, wisely designed compact of supernaturalism as clearly opposed to natur alism and humanism in the Spiritual domain. Its solid facts, its indisputable relations, its sure doctrines given of God, constitute a supernatural fabric of strength and beauty; and its inner life is a supernatural light, a superhuman flame. Otherwise its advocates are impos tors, and its teachers and propagators are weaklings, grossly deceived or deliberate deceivers. There is no middle ground. It is not a case of half-true, half-false. It is God's gift to man, or it is a gigantic falsehood. Its structure and essence are clear to the honest, open vision. Its principles are fixed in the moral and spiritual constitution of the eternal God, and its nature, aim and energies have been demonstrated tens of thousands of times in the relations of God and men. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Science Vs. Modern Spiritualism, Vol. 2: A Treatise on Turning Tables, the Supernatural in General, and Spirits And they are not only abundant, they are of gigantic dimensions. Between them and the miracles of Scripture there is the same difference as between the Apocryphal and Canonical Gospels. The apocryphas never believe they can say enough; they must have great wonders; they connect them with the earliest infancy of the Saviour, with the history of his mother, of Joseph, of his grandfather, and his grand mother they call into action animals, trees, and, in fact, give us a legend in place of a gospel; a thaumaturgus, instead of the Son of God. Book Sociology Science and the End of Philosophy

Download or read book Sociology Science and the End of Philosophy written by Sal Restivo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-07-06 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a unique analysis of how ideas about science and technology in the public and scientific imaginations (in particular about maths, logic, the gene, the brain, god, and robots) perpetuate the false reality that values and politics are separate from scientific knowledge and its applications. These ideas are reinforced by cultural myths about free will and individualism. Restivo makes a compelling case for a synchronistic approach in the study of these notoriously 'hard' cases, arguing that their significance reaches far beyond the realms of science and technology, and that their sociological and political ramifications are of paramount importance in our global society. This innovative work deals with perennial problems in the social sciences, philosophy, and the history of science and religion, and will be of special interest to professionals in these fields, as well as scholars of science and technology studies.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Advance of Science in the Last Half-Century Standstill by the decay and disruption of the Roman Empire, the consequent dis organisation of society, and the diversion of men's thoughts from sublunary matters to the problems of the supernatural world suggested by Christian dogma in the Mid dle Ages. And, notwithstanding sporadic attempts to recall men to the investiga tion of nature, here and there, it was not until the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries that physical science made a new start. Founding itself, at first, altogether upon that which had been done by the Greeks. Indeed, it must be admitted that the men of the Renaissance, though standing on the shoulders of the old philosophers, were a long time before they saw as much as their forerunners had done. She said that no one else can take her place. Book Science Worldviews and Education

Download or read book Science Worldviews and Education written by Michael Matthews and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-07-14 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has its origins in a special issue of the journal Science & Education (Volume 18 Numbers 6–7, 2009). The essay by Costas Skordoulis – ‘Science and Worldviews in the Marxist Tradition’ – did not appear in that special issue due to a mistake in production scheduling. It was published in an earlier issue of the journal (Volume 17 Number 6, 2008), but has been included in this book version of the special issue. As explained in the Introduction, the catalyst for the journal special issue was the essay on ‘Science, Worldviews and Education’ submitted to the journal by Hugh G. Gauch Jr. This was circulated to the other contributors who were asked to write their own contribution in the light of the arguments and literature contained in the paper. Hugh made brief ‘Responses and Clari?cations’ after the papers were written. However the Tanis Edis article on Islam and my own article on Priestley were processed too late to bene?t from Hugh’s appraisal. The journal is associated with the International History, Philosophy, and Science Teaching Group which was formed in 1987. The group stages biennial international conferences and occasional regional conferences (details can be found at www. ihpst. org). The group, though the journal, conferences, and its electronic newsletter (at www. ihpst.

Finucane surveys reports of ghosts from ancient Greece, the early Christian era, the Reformation, the Victorian age, and through the twentieth century. He asks such questions as: How have the physical aspects claimed for ghosts varied from age to age? What differences are there in the functions and intentions ascribed to ghosts? How have the changes in more general beliefsin religion and science, in particularinfluenced the perception of ghosts? Drawing on primary sources from all periods and cultures, Finucane addresses this topic in its full breadth.R.C. Book Supernatural Revelation

Download or read book Supernatural Revelation written by T. R. Birks and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Supernatural Revelation: Or First Principles of Moral Theology What babblings can be more profane and vain than those of Positivism with its new Supreme Being; or of Agnosticism, which places an algebraical x, the unknowable, on the throne of the universe? What can be more falsely named science than the audacious conjectures which have been of late repeatedly dignified with the name of scientific theories? Such as the con stant generation of the unlike from the unlike, through infinite ages of geological time, before there existed a single man who could witness this prodigious inver sion of the countless experiences of all real science for the last six thousand years? One great duty of Cambridge at this crisis, is in the study of nature to abide stedfastly by the induc tive principles of the philosophy of Bacon and Newton, so well carried out by many Cambridge students of these later times. But this implies the further duty to refrain from that unbridled license of imagination in scientific subjects, which leads many to dignify plausible or even unplausible conjectures with the name of science. Conjectures in science have a great use, but this depends on our never confounding them with proved facts. Book Beyond Supernature

Download or read book Beyond Supernature written by Lyall Watson and published by Bantam. This book was released on 2012-06-27 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thought-provoking look at the world of the supernatural that shows how many paranormal events can be explained by what we already know—or don’t know—about the natural world. Scientist and rationalist Lyall Watson, the author of the million-copy bestseller Supernature, reveals the inconsistencies, blank spots, and “soft edges” in current scientific theory that make the existence of the supernatural not only an intriguing possibility—but a necessary and perfectly logical part of our explanation of the workings of the universe. Examining breakthroughs in science from biology to biofeedback, from quantum physics to paraphysics, the author proposes a revolutionary synthesis of nature and supernature. He offers surprising insights into such “unexplainable” phenomena as telepathy, reincarnation, synchronicity, poltergeists, evolutionary intelligence, and other mind-bending questions challenging science today. Beyond Supernature is a groundbreaking new chapter in the never-ending search for reality. It is a book for anyone who can still look at the world with both common sense and a sense of wonder.
