Download or read book Technology and innovation centres written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Science and Technology Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2011-02-17 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Science and Technology Committee welcomes the Government's £200 million commitment for an elite network of Technology and Innovation Centres (TICs) but warns that the money should not be spread too thinly. An initial target of six to eight centres across the UK seems a sensible starting figure. The sources of funding for each centre need to be carefully balanced. TICs should follow the 'one third, one third, one third' model used by the equivalent centres in Germany, the Fraunhofer Institutes, which includes: one third public funding from government; one third competitive public-private sector funding i.e. UK or EU funding competitions ; one third from private sector contracts from businesses. The Committee recommends a cap on the amount of private sector funding each TIC can access in a given year in order to promote a more creative approach to innovation. TICs should build on existing facilities centres across the UK working on innovation and the commercialisation of research. In identifying which existing centres in the UK will become TICs, the primary objective must be the quality of the science and the economic benefit to the UK. The Committee is particularly attracted to the 'hub and spoke' model, as a way of spreading the economic benefit of TICs throughout the country. The possible effect of the TICs initiative on the wider funding activities of the Technology Strategy Board is a concern. The Committee recommends that the network of TICs be called 'Turing Centres', after the founder of modern computer science, Alan Turing.

Book Chinese Economic Development

Download or read book Chinese Economic Development written by Yinxing Hong and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-07-09 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides a meticulous analysis of economic development and concomitant problems in China since the late 1970s and advances suggestions on further economic modernisation and transition from both theoretical and practical angles. Based on theories from development economics and solid empirical studies, the authors, two renowned Chinese economists, provide a perceptive analysis of the Chinese development model in the post-Mao era. They shed light on questions that have perplexed many: How can China sustain the rapid growth of the past 40 years? Is there a unique "China path" to economic progress? They argue compellingly that China’s development model has to switch from a manufacturing-driven one to a brand-new approach, centring on scientific and technical innovation and the integration of its existing economic structure into an increasingly complex global economy. Such transformation will help overcome the "middle-income trap" while addressing other institutional and economic challenges. The book will appeal to students, scholars and policymakers interested in the Chinese and global economies, as well as transnational studies in the post-COVID-19 world. General readers willing to obtain a grasp of Chinese economic development from the insider’s perspective will also find it useful.

Book The Global Technology Revolution China In depth Analyses

Download or read book The Global Technology Revolution China In depth Analyses written by Richard S. Silberglitt and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2009 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2007, the Tianjin Binhai New Area (TBNA) and one of its administrative zones, the Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area (TEDA), in northeast China commissioned the RAND Corporation to perform a technology-foresight study to help them develop and implement a strategic vision and plan for economic growth through technological innovation. The principal objectives were to identify the most-promising emerging technology applications for TBNA and TEDA to pursue as part of their plan for growth, to analyze the drivers and barriers they would face in each case, and to recommend action plans for each technology application (TA). Seven TAs should form a pivotal part of TBNA's comprehensive strategic plan: cheap solar energy; advanced mobile communications and radio-frequency identification; rapid bioassays; membranes, filters, and catalysts for water purification; molecular-scale drug design, development, and delivery; electric and hybrid vehicles; and green manufacturing. The specific action plans can be integrated into an overarching strategic plan that rests on three legs: building a state-of-the-art R & D program; updating and expanding TBNA and TEDA's manufacturing base; and positioning TBNA and TEDA for the global marketplace. The plan offers TBNA a wealth of opportunities that will position it for the future development it envisions, and each TA emerges from one or more of TEDA's current pillar industries, making for a fluid transition that builds on existing strengths.

Book China s Reform to Overleap the Middle Income Trap

Download or read book China s Reform to Overleap the Middle Income Trap written by Yining Li and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-07-13 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses how China could avoid the middle-income trap. Professor Li Yining proposed the framework and wrote the first article. Under Li’s guidance, other articles were written by researchers at the Guanghua School of Management, Peking University. It is well known that China's reform has been highly successful, but there are still many unsolved institutional problems. The book’s authors suggest that the middle-income trap is composed of three traps. Firstly, there is the “development system trap”. Secondly, the “social crisis trap ” and finally, the “technology trap”. In order to avoid these traps, it is important for China to intensify its economic reform, to lessen the gap between the rich and poor, and to enhance innovations in technology as well as the capital market. This book uses both theoretical and case studies to discuss agricultural modernization, new urbanization, the urban-rural gap, income growth, community management, pastoral areas of medicine and the newly-industrializing economy, etc.
