Book excerpt: Presents proceedings of a workshop organised to review the current science and policy status of five atmospheric issues in Atlantic Canada, to suggest realignments of research and policy priorities, and to strengthen the regional network of scientists and policy makers. The issues addressed were regional acidification, low-level oxidants, stratospheric ozone depletion, hazardous air pollutants, and climatic change. For each issue, the present situation with respect to science and to policy is reviewed and workshop deliberations are presented. The appendix includes abstracts and summaries of poster and verbal presentations related to the five issues.

Book Acid Deposition Environmental Economic and Policy Issues

Download or read book Acid Deposition Environmental Economic and Policy Issues written by Donald Adams and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concern about acid deposition, commonly referred to as acid rain, as a widespread pollution problem with severe ecological consequences has heightened public awareness. Many authorities fear that acid deposition may be the worst environmental crisis of our industrialized society because of both the global implications and possible widespread, irreversible damage to lakes, soils, and forested ecosystems. Neither state nor international boundaries are exempt from the transport and deposition of airborne pollutants resulting from local and distant emission sources. The dilemma and debate will continue as long as society requires fossil fuels for its energy needs without regard to emission constraints. This book started as a modest attempt to provide a status report on atmospheric transport, the chemical processes which produce acidifying agents, and resultant ecological and economic consequences. The materials in this book have been substantially revised from those presented at the conference in 1983. It became obvious that additional chapters were required when sudden and profound changes occurring in European forests were reported. It is felt that perhaps such damages could be an early warning to forested ecosystems in the northeastern United States and Canada as well as other places throughout the world. Most importantly, it is essential that gained scientific knowledge be translated into required legislation - a section on Policy Issues was incorporated to address these concerns. It is hoped that the reader will become informed and concerned enough to be involved in ll this IIglobal debate. Donald D. Adams Halter P.

This book was released on 2019-07-04 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canada’s Top Climate Change Risks identifies the top risk areas based on the extent and likelihood of the potential damage, and rates the risk areas according to society’s ability to adapt and reduce negative outcomes. These 12 major areas of risk are: agriculture and food, coastal communities, ecosystems, fisheries, forestry, geopolitical dynamics, governance and capacity, human health and wellness, Indigenous ways of life, northern communities, physical infrastructure, and water. The report describes an approach to inform federal risk prioritization and adaptation responses. The Panel outlines a multi-layered method of prioritizing adaptation measures based on an understanding of the risk, adaptation potential, and federal roles and responsibilities.

Download or read book Arctic Air Pollution written by B. Stonehouse and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-01-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arctic atmospheric pollution is now a major international issue. This volume presents the most authoritative review of this increasingly important subject for an audience of both scientists and administrators concerned with worldwide, as well as polar, pollution problems. Arctic Air Pollution is an edited collection of papers, first presented at a conference helo as the Scott Polar Research Institute in Cambridge in 1985. Building on foundations established at earlier meetings, this volume examines the problem of Arctic air pollution in an integrated, multidisciplinary fashion, with contributions from leading authorities in chemistry, ecology, climatology and epidemiology. To chemists, physicists and climatologists, it presents scientific problems. Ecologists are concerned with environmental threats; medical researchers with potential threats to human health. International lawyers and administrators are concerned with the legal implications of pollutants transferred across continents. Overall hangs the major question; can man-made pollution affect the delicate energy balance of the Arctic, and precipitate major climatic change worldwide?

Book Attribution of Extreme Weather Events in the Context of Climate Change

Download or read book Attribution of Extreme Weather Events in the Context of Climate Change written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2016-07-28 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As climate has warmed over recent years, a new pattern of more frequent and more intense weather events has unfolded across the globe. Climate models simulate such changes in extreme events, and some of the reasons for the changes are well understood. Warming increases the likelihood of extremely hot days and nights, favors increased atmospheric moisture that may result in more frequent heavy rainfall and snowfall, and leads to evaporation that can exacerbate droughts. Even with evidence of these broad trends, scientists cautioned in the past that individual weather events couldn't be attributed to climate change. Now, with advances in understanding the climate science behind extreme events and the science of extreme event attribution, such blanket statements may not be accurate. The relatively young science of extreme event attribution seeks to tease out the influence of human-cause climate change from other factors, such as natural sources of variability like El Niño, as contributors to individual extreme events. Event attribution can answer questions about how much climate change influenced the probability or intensity of a specific type of weather event. As event attribution capabilities improve, they could help inform choices about assessing and managing risk, and in guiding climate adaptation strategies. This report examines the current state of science of extreme weather attribution, and identifies ways to move the science forward to improve attribution capabilities.

Book Canada Goose Studies in the Maritime Provinces 1950 1992

Download or read book Canada Goose Studies in the Maritime Provinces 1950 1992 written by Canada. Environment Canada. Atlantic Region and published by Sackville, N.B. : Environment Canada, Atlantic Region. This book was released on 1997 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compilation assembles papers representing 40 years of unpublished data on Canada geese in the Maritimes, papers mostly unknown outside the agencies that commissioned the surveys or studies. Assembled information is also interpreted in the context of flyway and nation and related to the wider Canada goose picture. Fifteen chapters present and discuss information from the individual goose staging and wintering areas in the Maritimes. These are followed by chapters on the few Canada geese that breed there, on the habitats and foods used by staging and wintering geese, on the longer movements of geese as shown by band recoveries and neck-collar sightings, and on the annual kill of Canada geese by hunters and subsistence users in eastern Canada. A final chapter then discusses the place of these goose stocks in the wider Atlantic flyway Canada goose populations.
