Book excerpt: Excerpt from Science and Art of Poultry Culture In placing this volume before the public, the author fully realizes the responsibility that rests upon one who assumes so grave an undertaking. The poultry industry has reached such proportions, the amount of capital invested is growing so rapidly and the ultimate success of the individual is so necessary, that a treatise on the poultry industry should be compiled in the most careful and painstaking manner. Since childhood, poultry has had its allurements for the author, who spent his early years upon a farm. The training given by the high school, the college, the university, and the subsequent practice of the law, has enabled the author to enjoy keenly the fancier's labors and assisted him to fully realize that in the field of poultry culture it is brains, not brawn, that win success. Whatever of merit is to be found in this treatise is largely due to the years of assistance given by various Government experiment stations throughout the United States and Canada, to the efficiency of the poultry journals, to the special treatises of value, to the splendid exhibitions, and to the practical experience of the author as a fancier, each of which has had a share in the general education leading to this volume. This education is opening to the author the possibilities that lie ahead for the student in poultrydom, and the vast extent and importance of this field in the commercial world. To Wm. E. Becker, is due the credit for valuable aid and the excellent chapter upon the "Vices, Enemies, Parasites and Diseases of Poultry and their Proper Treatment," and who in turn wishes to acknowledge the assistance of Salmon and other prominent authorities. The author will feel that this volume will not have been in vain if it shall prove helpful and instructive to poultry lovers, whether they are beginners or veterans in the business or whether they are in college, on a city lot, or on the farm. The practice of poultry culture is an art or a craft or a combination of art and craft according to the purpose for which it is pursued and the taste and skill of those engaged in it. A workman may attain great proficiency in many operations merely through skill in imitation. Such a workman, however, must work always after a model or under the direction of one familiar with all phases of his art or craft and thoroughly under standing its principles. In any enterprise engaging large numbers of people, only a small proportion of these need be qualified to oversee and direct the work; but as the number of persons engaged diminishes, the proportion understanding the processes involved and their relations must increase, until, in such occupa tions as farming and housekeeping, each husbandman and house wife must be able to do and to direct the doing of a variety of operations, adapting and adjusting all to the general result sought. The relation of this fact to agricultural and technical education has not been sufficiently emphasized. Considering it here only in its application to poultry culture, it is plain that a general knowl edge of the subject is as necessary and as useful to one whose plans contemplate perhaps the maintenance of a flock of a few hundred fowls on the farm as to one who intends to undertake operations on a large scale. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poultry Culture In no section of the country is soil better adapted to poultry. Most parts of the State have a light, sandy or gravelly loam. There is no danger, therefore, of its becoming contaminated with droppings, as it is leached out by the heavy rains. On such farms in New England poultry have been kept on the same land for forty years with no serious results. Of course, I refer now especially to poultry farms, not general farms where only a few fowls are kept, and to the extensive rather than the intensive system. Again, much of the soil here is adapted to the growth of corn, mangels, beets and all kinds of green crops for poultry. Its sandy condition gives a quick growth which means tender, palatable green food throughout the growing season. The fact that our soil and climate are well adapted to all kinds of fruit is an advantage that cannot be overlooked. Fruit trees not only yield a crop, but furnish shade in summer and windbreaks in winter. Much Of the soil is well suited to the production of corn, and immense crops can be produced by raising corn and poultry on the same ground in alternate years.
