Book excerpt: This volume is part of a series intended as a salute to the pioneering work of science fiction film makers from the ‘golden age’ of science fiction films of the 1950s. The films in this volume feature monsters that stand as metaphors for the fears of the time when people had genuine concerns about atomic power and the atom bomb’s potential for the first time in human history to bring about the end of human civilisation. For instance, in the case of Godzilla (1954) the film is an allegory for the destruction and devastation unleashed on Japan by the atomic bomb, with the 400-foot-tall mutant dinosaur Gojira, serving as the visual metaphor. Such monsters represent forces of nature awakened by human science that once brought into being cannot be controlled.

Book excerpt: This 9th volume “Accidents & Experiments” of the Sci-Fi Film Fiesta eBook series features classic science fiction films from the 1950s whose subject matter involves discoveries and breakthroughs made through experiments or even by sheer accident. The important point about such discoveries, though are the consequences that result from them. Book excerpt: The Lost Last Volume 12 “Speculations & Ruminations” deals with various implications, themes and ideas that often arise out of the world of science fiction films and literature referenced in the other volumes of this eBook series. All of this material is organized into four broad sections: Part 1: “Going Forward” Part 2: “Dystopia Now” Part 3: “Poetic Ponderings” Part 4: “Sci-Fi Future Is here & Now” The content of this volume is intended to encourage a bit of thought and debate about the world we live in, the kind of future we would (and wouldn’t) wish for ourselves and for future generations, along with an appreciation of the sometimes abused, tenuous and fragile nature of what many of us take for granted such as freedom of thought and speech and our system democracy.

Book excerpt: The science fiction films from the 1950s that feature in this volume imaginatively depict what could happen during a time of alien contact in the form of transmission of messages and visitations to the planet earth. Such films also serve to reflect the kinds of fears that were prevalent at the time as well as offering commentary concerning the state of human affairs on our own planet. Book The Transition Years

Download or read book The Transition Years written by Hal C. F. Astell and published by . This book was released on 2015-11-14 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, by film critic Hal C F Astell of the Apocalypse Later review site, covers every feature and every short film that screened at the International Horror & Sci-Fi Film Festival in Tempe, AZ in 2011, 2012 and 2013. These were 'the transition years' as the festival merged into its big sister, the Phoenix Film Festival, and it was forced to reinvent itself. Inspired by the realisation many of his reviews of festival films were the only reviews that existed online and that some films had no presence left on the internet, as if they had never been, he aimed to review every film that played this festival, which holds a special place in his heart, and to compile these reviews into book form. This book, whatever else it is, is a line in the sand to say that these films existed, that they played a festival, were seen by an audience, even won awards. Hopefully reading about them here will keep some of them alive because no film deserves to die. No, not even that one. The foreword was written by Mike Flanagan, the director of Absentia and Oculus. The afterword was written by Andrea Canales, the Midnite Movie Mamacita. The cover is by Marty Freetage. Features reviewed include Absentia, Midnight Son, The Mole Man of Belmont Avenue, Triple Hit, Hisss, I am Nancy, The People vs George Lucas, Stake Land, Tucker and Dale vs Evil, Below Zero, It's in the Blood, Folklore, Pig, Beyond the Black Rainbow, The Brain That Wouldn't Die, FDR: American Badass!, Monster Brawl, Slumber Party Slaughter, The Theatre Bizarre, The Victim, With Great Power: The Stan Lee Story, Found, Nailbiter, Sader Ridge, Channeling, Found in Time, Space Milkshake, Errors of the Human Body, The Four, Gamera vs Guiron, The Ghastly Love of Johnny X, Kiss of the Damned, Play Dead, Saw and They Live. Book Travails with the Alien

Download or read book Travails with the Alien written by Satyajit Ray and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2018-04-25 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Satyajit Ray was a master of science fiction writing. Through his Professor Shonku stories and other fiction and non-fiction pieces, he explored the genre from various angles. In the 1960s, Ray wrote a screenplay for what would have been the first-of-its-kind sci-fi film to be made in India. It was called The Alien and was based on his own short story "Bonkubabur Bandhu". On being prompted by Arthur C. Clarke, who found the screenplay promising, Ray sent the script to Columbia Pictures in Hollywood, who agreed to back it, and Peter Sellers was approached to play a prominent role. Then started the "Ordeals of the Alien" as Ray calls it, as even after a series of trips to the US, UK and France, the film was never made, and more shockingly, some fifteen years later, Ray watched Steven Spielberg's film Close Encounters of the Third Kind and later E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, and realized these bore uncanny resemblances to his script The Alien, including the way the ET was designed! A slice of hitherto undocumented cinema history, Travails with the Alien includes Ray's detailed essay on the project with the full script of The Alien, as well as the original short story on which the screenplay was based. These, presented alongside correspondence between Ray and Peter Sellers, Arthur C. Clarke, Marlon Brando, Hollywood producers who showed interest, and a fascinating essay by the young student at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism who broke the Spielberg story, make this book a rare and compelling read on science fiction, cinema and the art of adaptation.
