Book Thematic Catalogues in Music

Download or read book Thematic Catalogues in Music written by Barry S. Brook and published by Pendragon Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1997, twenty-five years after its first publication, Thematic Catalogues in Music-An Annotated Bibliography (Pendragon Press, 1972) appeared in a completely revised and expanded Second Edition. It contains almost twice as many entries as its predecessor; virtually every one of the original entries has been updated; and the following noteworthy features have been added.1. A second introductory essay detailing trends and innovations in thematic cataloguing brought about by the revolution in technology of the past twenty years. 2. Appendices listing thematic catalogues in series; both by national organizations and publishers; a detailed up-to-date, country-by-country report of activities worldwide; a listing of major computerized databanks. 3. New double-column format. 4. Numerous illustrations and reproductions of pages from thematic catalogues of historical significance. The second edition continues the policy of listing all known thematic catalogues and indexes, including those in doctoral dissertations, masters essays, and computer databanks, as well as in-progress and unpublished works, plus reviews, and literature about thematic cataloguing. The original numbering of the 1972 entries has been retained, with new items appearing in proper alphabetical/chronological sequence but with the addition of decimal numbers and/or letters (363.1 or 960a). Lastly, the original historical introduction and special appendices of the first edition have been retained with emendations where needed.

Book Schubert

  • Author : Brian Newbould
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 1999-04-01
  • ISBN : 9780520219571
  • Pages : 488 pages

Download or read book Schubert written by Brian Newbould and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1999-04-01 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of all the great composers, none - not even Mozart - has been so dogged by myth and misunderstanding as Franz Schubert. The notion of Schubert as a pudgy, lovelorn Bohemian schwammerl (mushroom) scribbling tunes on the back of menus in idle moments has never quite been eradicated. In this major new biography, Brian Newbould balances discussion of Schubert's compositions with an exploration of biographical influences that shaped his musical aesthetics. Schubert: The Music and the Man offers an eminently readable description of a musician who was compulsively dedicated to his art - a composer so prolific that he produced over a thousand works in eighteen years. Gifted with an intuitive know-how, coupled with a Mozartian facility for composition, Schubert combined the relish and wonder of an amateur with the discipline and technical rigor of a professional. He moved quickly and comfortably among genres, and sometimes composed directly into score but many pieces required painstaking revision before they satisfied his growing self-criticism. Examining afresh the enigmas surrounding Schubert's religious outlook, his loves, his sexuality, his illness and death, Newbould offers above all a celebration of a unique genius, an idiosyncratic composer of an astonishing body of powerful, enduring music.

Book Schubert s Dramatic Lieder

    Book Details:
  • Author : Marjorie Wing Hirsch
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 1993-08-12
  • ISBN : 9780521418201
  • Pages : 200 pages

Download or read book Schubert s Dramatic Lieder written by Marjorie Wing Hirsch and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1993-08-12 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the way in which Schubert revolutionised the Lied, transforming folk song into art song through the mixture of dramatic and lyrical vocal genres. By introducing dramatic poetry and musical traits within solo song settings, he turned the Lied into a highly expressive musical medium capable of conveying the complexities and nuances of the new Romantic poetry. In so doing, he created an art form which attracted nearly every subsequent composer of the period. Schubert's numerous dramatic songs have baffled critics from his day to our own. Their unusual stylistic characteristics - through composed form, progressive tonal structures, declamatory vocal lines, illustrative accompaniments - fly in the face of traditional conceptions of the Lied. Dr Hirsch's discussion and analysis of selected dramatic Lieder illuminate Schubert's compositional innovation.

Book Thematic Development of Schubert s Last Piano Sonata D 960 First Movement

Download or read book Thematic Development of Schubert s Last Piano Sonata D 960 First Movement written by Yeo and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2010-02 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2009 in the subject Musicology - Miscellaneous, The University of Malaya, language: English, abstract: Franz Schubert' last piano sonata, D. 960 in Bb Major by was written in 1828 (published in 1839), shortly after Beethoven's death -- he died in 1827. According to Robert Winter, Beethoven was the most influential composer for Franz Schubert. Schubert's sonatas, in particular, were modeled on Beethoven's in terms of form and structure. This last sonata is one of Schubert's popular sonatas, and is often performed. It also has been frequently criticized because of the unusual aspects of its sonata form. Winter has described the last sonata as, "suffused by the composer's characteristic melancholy, mingled with a feeling of contemplative ecstasy. The stepwise elegiac opening alternates with disembodied trills in the bass, leading to remote keys, notably f# minor, before the exposition is over." This paper will discuss the following aspects of the first movement -- the form, the key schemes, and the development of themes.
