Book The Course of Study in the Mechanic Arts Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Course of Study in the Mechanic Arts Classic Reprint written by Ethical Culture School and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Course of Study in the Mechanic-Arts The reader will undoubtedly note the use in this course of the term Mechanic-Arts. Although it is not commonly used in this sense it has been adopted, after careful reflection, as the most accurate caption that can be given to that department of manual work that uses the tools of the mechanic. Moreover, throughout the length and breadth of the course in this department, the pupils experience is of the mechanic or artisan type. The term "Mechanic-Arts," therefore, has been adopted as the title for all the manual work that is conducted in the shops of the school. One other introductory word: So brief a statement as that which follows can deal only with the most important and fundamental of those general considerations that have governed the development of the mechanic-arts course in this school. Therefore, much that is generally understood to belong to the forms of manual training under discussion is left to the reader to supply. The mechanic-arts are pre-eminently the tool using arts. Their significance in the school is in direct relation to the part they have played in the development of man and civilization. That this significance is great is clear from the fact that the development of tools and the tool arts is wrapped up in and closely integrated with the development of all human interests, achievements, and endeavors. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mechanic Arts, Vol. 1 When Benjamin Franklin was old enough to choose a vocation his father took him around to see all the trades then found in Boston; with the result that the boy decided to be a printer. The world, however, is too large, and industry too complicated, to permit the father to do that to-day. At the meeting of the National Educa tion Association in Boston in July, 1910, President Eliot said that the Life Career Motive, whether in school, or college, or life, is the motive under which we all do our best work. To bring the vocations home to the boys and girls, and help them to find this life career motive early, is the aim of these books. One day fourteen-year-old Sophie Amundsen comes home from school to find in her mailbox two notes, with one question on each: "Who are you?" and "Where does the world come from?" From that irresistible beginning, Sophie becomes obsessed with questions that take her far beyond what she knows of her Norwegian village. Through those letters, she enrolls in a kind of correspondence course, covering Socrates to Sartre, with a mysterious philosopher, while receiving letters addressed to another girl. Who is Hilde? And why does her mail keep turning up? To unravel this riddle, Sophie must use the philosophy she is learning—but the truth turns out to be far more complicated than she could have imagined.

Book Hoosiers and the American Story

Download or read book Hoosiers and the American Story written by Madison, James H. and published by Indiana Historical Society. This book was released on 2014-10 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A supplemental textbook for middle and high school students, Hoosiers and the American Story provides intimate views of individuals and places in Indiana set within themes from American history. During the frontier days when Americans battled with and exiled native peoples from the East, Indiana was on the leading edge of America’s westward expansion. As waves of immigrants swept across the Appalachians and eastern waterways, Indiana became established as both a crossroads and as a vital part of Middle America. Indiana’s stories illuminate the history of American agriculture, wars, industrialization, ethnic conflicts, technological improvements, political battles, transportation networks, economic shifts, social welfare initiatives, and more. In so doing, they elucidate large national issues so that students can relate personally to the ideas and events that comprise American history. At the same time, the stories shed light on what it means to be a Hoosier, today and in the past.
