Book excerpt: The purpose of this correlational study was to examine the relationship between absenteeism due to suspensions and math and reading scores from the 2016 – 2017 Georgia Milestones Test for tenth and eleventh grade regular education, male students. The focus of this study was on determining if math and reading scores on standardized tests could be predicted by the number of days missed from school due to suspensions using a bivariate regression. A total of 93 male high school students in grades ten and eleven who have received one or more out of school suspensions during the previous school term were randomly selected from 4 high schools in a suburban metro Atlanta school district. A bivariate regression analysis was used in this study. The results of the analysis showed a significant but weak negative correlation between days missed from school due to OSS and EOC analytic geometry and American Literature scores on the Georgia Milestones Assessment. This study may have implications for national school discipline policies in that the data may indicate a need for educational leaders to provide additional training for teachers and policy makers to take a closer look at the negative impact of zero tolerance policies in schools.

A subset of Chicago schools-about a quarter of high schools and 10 percent of schools with middle grades-have very high suspension rates, and almost all of these schools predominantly serve African American students. These schools' students come from the poorest neighborhoods with the lowest incoming achievement; many have been victims of abuse or neglect. At high-suspending high schools, about half of students received a suspension in the 2013-14 school year. This report examines reasons for racial and gender disparities in suspension rates and finds that suspensions are concentrated among schools serving the most vulnerable student populations. It also explores the degree to which differences in schools' suspension rates are related to school climate and student achievement.

Book excerpt: In almost every sector of the educational arena, educators, administrators and parents are concerned with the problem of establishing environments that are contributing to a successful educational outcome. The most profound questions today are safety in the schools, which stimulated political and educational leaders to establish zero tolerance policies for different negative behaviors in an effort to deter students into sustaining good behaviors. With an almost epidemic in school-based violent crimes; such as Virginia State University, in April 2007; school boards across America are searching for alternatives for educating violent and disruptive students while still meeting their constitutional rights to an education. The purpose of this research study is to determine to what extent students agree, and analyze the deterrent effects of in and out of school suspensions on the personal-social characteristics of the student and the academic achievement as well. Statistical figures will be gathered from schools imposing suspensions on students for a variety of reasons to come up with a consensus as to what the most frequent cause of students' suspension would be. The subjects in this study consisted of fifth graders in a large urban school setting; most of who are residents in low socioeconomic neighborhoods. The focus of the study is on the three variables that appear to be indicators of academic and behavioral success: (1) attendance, (2) grades, (3) attitude. This study explored the answer the following questions with regard to the students' personal-social characteristics and academic performance: How does suspension impact the educational and personal-social characteristics of students? How severe is the effect of in-school and out-of-school suspensions to the academic performance of the student? Is there any alternative to suspension? What are the available interventions for a long-term prevention of this phenomenon? These questions will be addressed within the context of the administrator's perception of the improvement of the learning environment. (Report includes five appendixes: (1) Human Subjects Review Approval Letter; (2) Acknowledge and Inform Consent Form; (3) Demographic Data Sheet; (4) Results of Out of School Suspension Graph; and (5) Results of Out of School Form. Book excerpt: In this study, I use multilevel modeling and multivariate matching to estimate the effect of suspension on college attendance. I build upon existing research that has suggested a negative relationship between school suspension and educational outcomes but that has mostly not been able to control for pre-existing differences in academic achievement between suspended and non-suspended students. I also extend my analysis to college attendance, which is currently an under-studied outcome related to high school suspension and thought to be important for many life outcomes. After controlling for baseline academic achievement, socioeconomic status, and other potential confounders, the college attendance rate of students who were suspended once or twice in the first semester of tenth grade was approximately 10 percentage points lower than that of non-suspended students. These results suggest that racial differences in educational attainment are in part due to the disproportionate discipline of African American students.

Book excerpt: This Brief reviews the past, present, and future use of school corporal punishment in the United States, a practice that remains legal in 19 states as it is constitutionally permitted according to the U.S. Supreme Court. As a result of school corporal punishment, nearly 200,000 children are paddled in schools each year. Most Americans are unaware of this fact or the physical injuries sustained by countless school children who are hit with objects by school personnel in the name of discipline. Therefore, Corporal Punishment in U.S. Public Schools begins by summarizing the legal basis for school corporal punishment and trends in Americans’ attitudes about it. It then presents trends in the use of school corporal punishment in the United States over time to establish its past and current prevalence. It then discusses what is known about the effects of school corporal punishment on children, though with so little research on this topic, much of the relevant literature is focused on parents’ use of corporal punishment with their children. It also provides results from a policy analysis that examines the effect of state-level school corporal punishment bans on trends in juvenile crime. Book excerpt: The study aimed to investigate the relationship between student suspensions and student achievement levels as measured on the Spring 2019 Georgia Milestones Assessment System (GMAS). The study utilized 6th through 8th-grade general education students in a Georgia Public Middle School assessed in language arts and mathematics that received one or more continuous days of suspension in response to violating the school’s code of conduct. The student suspension data consisted of students that received an in-school or out-of-school suspension for infractions of the school’s discipline plan for conduct. The quantitative, quasi-experimental study used archived data obtained from the School-Wide Information System (SWIS) and school report card data published by the Georgia Department of Education (GADOE) to compare the suspended student data to the school, district, and state. IRB approval allowed the data to be collected, tested, and analyzed using a Kruskal-Wallis H test to determine whether a statistically significant relationship existed between student suspensions and student achievement. The sample size is 160 “general education” students. The motive for this study was based on the author's perception of the misuse of zero-tolerance policies and the idea that missed classroom instructional days may negatively influence student achievement. Based on the findings of this proposed study, recommendations were made for additional classroom management training, alternatives for exclusionary practices, and alternative lessons for suspended students.
