Book Relation of Size of Class to School Efficiency Classic Reprint

Download or read book Relation of Size of Class to School Efficiency Classic Reprint written by Bureau of Educational Research and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Relation of Size of Class to School Efficiency This investigation was initiated by Mr. B. R. Buckingham, formerly Director of the Bureau of Educational Research. It was planned and executed by him with the assistance of Mr. P.R. Stevenson, a full time assistant in the employ of the Bureau of Educational Research during the school year of 1920-21. The present Director of the Bureau of Educational Research had no connection with the study until late in the summer of 1920-21. The portion of this report which deals with "existing conditions in regard to class size and the relation of size of class in high schools to school efficiency" is based upon tabulations made by employees of the Bureau of Educational Research under Mr, Stevenson's direction and included by him in a report submitted to the present Director of the Bureau of Educational Research. The chapter devoted to the relation of the size of class In elementary schools to school efficiency Is based upon tabulations made from the original data under the Immediate direction of the present Director. The concept of the efficiency ratio and the use of this concept in the Interpretation of the data are entirely the work of the present Director of the Bureau of Educational Research. The conclusions are also his own. Certain limitations of the investigation, which the report discusses in detail, cause the results to have a limited practical significance, but it is thought that the publication is justified for two reasons. In the first place, the concept of school efficiency and the analysis of the conditions which must be considered in any investigation relating to school efficiency should be helpful to future Investigators not only of the question of class size but also of questions of other phases of school procedure. In the second place, the report emphasizes the need for careful planning which will result In the control of all factors involved In the teaching situation. There Is also emphasis upon the need for securing normal conditions If the results are to be interpreted with reference to the modification of practise. Such analysis and careful thinking are not only important phases of educational research but they are the foundation upon which both the data collected and the statistical manipulation of them are based. Book The Transformation of Title IX

Download or read book The Transformation of Title IX written by R. Shep Melnick and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One civil rights-era law has reshaped American society—and contributed to the country's ongoing culture wars Few laws have had such far-reaching impact as Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. Intended to give girls and women greater access to sports programs and other courses of study in schools and colleges, the law has since been used by judges and agencies to expand a wide range of antidiscrimination policies—most recently the Obama administration’s 2016 mandates on sexual harassment and transgender rights. In this comprehensive review of how Title IX has been implemented, Boston College political science professor R. Shep Melnick analyzes how interpretations of "equal educational opportunity" have changed over the years. In terms accessible to non-lawyers, Melnick examines how Title IX has become a central part of legal and political campaigns to correct gender stereotypes, not only in academic settings but in society at large. Title IX thus has become a major factor in America's culture wars—and almost certainly will remain so for years to come.

Book School Effectiveness and School Improvement

Download or read book School Effectiveness and School Improvement written by Bert.P.M. Creemers and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-02-27 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: School effectiveness and school improvement have different origins: School effectiveness is more directed to finding out "what works" in education and "why"; school improvement is practice and policy oriented and intended to change education in the desired direction. However, in their orientation to outcomes, input, processes, and context in education, they also have much in common. In the theoretical part, different orientations have been analysed and combined in a model for effective school improvement. Based on this analysis, an evaluation framework was developed for the analysis of the case studies of school improvement projects in the participating countries. The theoretical model and the results of the analyses of the case studies were combined in a framework of effective school improvement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a thorough review of the research literature on the effect of school size in primary and secondary education on three types of outcomes: student achievement, non-cognitive outcomes and costs per student. Based on 84 scientific publications and several prior reviews, the book discusses four main areas: the impact of school size on cognitive learning outcomes and non-cognitive outcomes; the "state of the art" of empirical research on economies of size; the direct and indirect impact of school size, conditioned by other school context variables on student performance and the specific position of the Netherlands in an international perspective. The book presents summaries of the results and main conclusions found and discusses these with respect to their relevance for educational policy in general and for the Netherlands in particular. The book concludes with suggestions for future research on school size.

As the nation enters the 21st century, it faces a major challenge: how best to tie this financial investment to the goal of high levels of achievement for all students. In addition, policymakers want assurance that education dollars are being raised and used in the most efficient and effective possible ways. The book covers such topics as: Legal and legislative efforts to reduce spending and achievement gaps. The shift from "equity" to "adequacy" as a new standard for determining fairness in education spending. The debate and the evidence over the productivity of American schools. Strategies for using school finance in support of broader reforms aimed at raising student achievement. This book contains a comprehensive review of the theory and practice of financing public schools by federal, state, and local governments in the United States. It distills the best available knowledge about the fairness and productivity of expenditures on education and assesses options for changing the finance system.
