Book School Room Helps for Teachers and Parents Classic Reprint

Download or read book School Room Helps for Teachers and Parents Classic Reprint written by George Washington Jackson and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School-Room Helps for Teachers and Parents After thirty-five years of active service in the schoolroom, the writer has thought it befitting to crown his work with a book giving some of his experiences to the public. This is not done for the purpose of exploding some theory or saying some "wise" things, but merely to give some one who may wish to read them, the writer's varied experience in the schoolroom. One generation profits by the successes and failures of another; the son profits by the fortunes and misfortunes of the father. Each generation, each race, each son gets its first lessons or his first lessons from the one that precedes. Too, the author has two other purposes for sending this little book out to the public: One is that it may be a means of dropping a word here and there that may help some struggling young person to become a more acceptable teacher; the other is that some contribution to school literature may be made by the Negro teachers of Texas. This book is not sent out to proclaim that the writer was a great teacher, nor that he was a great success, but rather to say something which, we hope, may encourage and stimulate a struggling brother or sister in the work of teaching. In our treatment of this subject, we shall attempt to be original, therefore we do not aim to follow old, beaten paths in the discussion of it, but we ask our readers to grant us special privileges in the execution of the book, and to look with no critical eye upon any departure from the usual custom of writers of School Government; for we are impressed that conditions which have influenced us during our work in various schools of the race, have been such as to call forth circumstances very peculiar and especially characteristic of Negro schools. In all the vocations in life, there are men and women who have made their way up the hill of fame or have achieved whatever success that has come to them, by dint of effort and not by fortune nor by accident. It is said that some people acquire fortune by inheritance; some, by having fortune thrust upon them; others, by hard work. The writer is, if anything at all, a humble representative of the latter class who has made his own way by his own efforts. This experience includes the training of more than five thousand young men and of nearly one thousand young women, a large portion of them for the office of teachers; and it has been gained in College, in Boarding School, in a city High School, and in a State Normal School. In all this prolonged and varied experience, I have constantly put myself in the attitude of a learner, and my aim in the present volume is to place before the younger members of the profession, in the briefest and clearest terms possible, the lessons I have myself learned."

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales of the School-Room That such accounts were acceptable to the younger class of readers, has been proved, by the pleasure with which the volume was received. But other schools have risen up, since the far-famed Amwell; and we may imagine, that many of the youthful inmates might have interesting facts to communicate, if they could be in duced to relate them. Not that at so early an age they are likely to have wit messed any events beyond those usually oc curring in a family circle; but, a young person of mind and observation, may often remember circumstances on which she might converse with improvement to her young. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old-Time Schools and School-Books The contrast between the dainty picture books that are provided to entice the school children of the present along the paths of knowledge, and the sparsely illustrated volumes conned by the little folk of two or three generations ago, is very great; and yet the Old books seemed beautiful to the children then, and the charm all comes back when a person of middle age or beyond happens on one of these humble friends of his youth. What an aroma of the far-gone days of childhood hovers in the yellow pages! The: scenes in the schoolroom rise in the memory, one is young again, and has in gentle illusion the same feelings and the same juvenile companions as of Old. Download or read book The Outward Room written by Millen Brand and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2010-10-19 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Outward Room is a book about a young woman’s journey from madness to self-discovery. It created a sensation when it was first published in 1937, and has lost none of its immediacy or its power to move the reader. Having suffered a nervous breakdown after her brother’s death in a car accident, Harriet Demuth is committed to a mental hospital, but her doctor’s Freudian nostrums do little to make her well. Convinced that she and she alone can refashion her life, Harriet makes a daring escape from the hospital—hopping a train by night and riding the rails into the vastness of New York City in the light of the rising sun. It is the middle of the Great Depression, and at first Harriet is lost among the city’s anonymous multitudes. She pawns her jewelry and lives an increasingly hand-to-mouth existence until she meets John, a machine-shop worker. Slowly Harriet begins to recover her sense of self; slowly she and John begin to fall in love. The story of that emerging love, told with the lyricism of Virginia Woolf and the realism of Theodore Dreiser, is the heart of Millen Brand’s remarkable book.
