This book was released on 2022 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate perceptions of secondary level athletic coaches' and student organization advisors about the reasons students participate in school-related activities, what impact those activities have on school culture and how the experiences garnered through participation in school-related activities impact a student's adult development. The researcher explored the findings from the responses of 58 middle and high school coaches and student organization advisors in a rural south central Pennsylvania school district. The participants completed a researcher-created online survey and questionnaire that was a combination of Likert-style statements and open-ended responses. Individual interviews conducted by the researcher with eight panicipants provided additional insight into the perceptions of athletic coaches and student organization advisors. The findings of the research affirmed that coaches and advisors identify criterion that students participate in school-related activities to include interest and peer involvement along with familial support. Responses from the data collected demonstrated that there is a perception of how student's school-related participation impact school culture. Participants in this study have shared that school culture improves with student involvement because students are building a shared culture and are accountable to the team, organization, their school, and their community. Results of the study investigated how student experiences in school-related activities impacts student's adult development. From data gathered, a theme emerged demonstrating that skills such as leadership, teamwork, and communication are among the skills students acquire from school-related activity participation. These findings may guide future research on student participation in school-related activities.

Download or read book The Influence of Extracurricular Activities on Engagement and Environment Elements of School Culture at Two Title I Middle Schools in Alabama written by Jeremy B. Jones and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Limited research had been conducted on the role extracurricular activities had on school culture. Even less was dedicated to how middle school educators perceived how extracurricular activities influenced school culture. Due to the lack of overall research, further research was necessary to develop a better understanding of the influence of extracurricular activities on school culture, more specifically the Safe Supportive Schools Model’s engagement and environment elements of school culture. The purpose of this basic interpretive qualitative study was to examine educators’ perceptions of the influence extracurricular activities had on the Safe Supportive Schools Model’s engagement and environment elements of school culture at two Title I middle schools in south Alabama. For this study, I conducted a document analysis on the extracurricular activities provided by each school, and I used an email list provided by each school’s principal to email a questionnaire. I analyzed the extracurricular activities provided and the number of students who participated in each. I then coded the questionnaire responses from 12 participants. Six themes emerged regarding educators' perceptions of the influence extracurricular activities had on the Safe Supportive Schools Model’s engagement and environment elements of school culture. I formed three themes from the engagement element: student engagement, shaping school culture, and educator involvement and support. I formed three additional three themes from the environment element: student development, instructional environment, and physical health and wellness.

Abstract: The competitive education system in Hong Kong makes students and parents tear between the philosophy of achieving academic excellence and the need to develop generic skills from participating in a wide range of activities. With the strong sports background, I, as the researcher, was intrigued by the sport excellence of the research school. In addition to the pursuit of academic excellence, the research school has outstanding sports achievement. The school has produced not merely just a few sports stars, but overall, her school teams are strong in each and every sporting event and thereby the school has been famed as the Sports Empire in the educational circle in Hong Kong. This study aimed to explore the extent of sport relates to school culture, and how this influences the school community and students. The central research question in this study is: How does sport nurture school culture? This research was a case study of a boys' secondary school in Hong Kong. This study was descriptive in nature and in order to gain an in-depth understanding of the context of the research site, qualitative research method was employed. As the prototype of this research could not be predetermined and full employment of human behaviours could not speculate about the outcomes, the actual chemistry of sport and school culture was discovered ethnographically. Data collection methods included unobtrusive observations, critical incidents, semi-structured interviews and document analysis. Subsequent triangulation of data was employed in order to validate different types of data from different perspectives. Results have demonstrated several distinct features of the school, including all of her students are involved in sport, individual attributes are acquired through sports participation and coherent individual norms form the school culture. The data of this research have produced the analysis of powerful cohesive force, ethos of collectivism over individualism in sport, winning philosophy and school culture highlights sports achievement. These four dimensions of analysis were considered collectively to further explore the findings of sports and extracurricular activities extend the realm of education and perpetuate the school culture, in addition to competitions are crucial and all-embracing lifelong lessons. Therefore, this research study has illustrated that sport allows students to pursue their lifelong endeavours and it is as important as the knowledge they acquire in general education. Above all, sport is a special discourse to perpetuate school culture of the research school and a platform to extend the depth and breadth of an all-round education. Ultimately, the analysis and findings of this research study have generated a new educational framework in order to broaden the scope of education and inculcate learning experience at three levels. This is a theory of never-ending quest for excellence, which aims at promoting the development of students' excellence and their lifelong attitude of self-advancement. Book excerpt: Pre-University Paper from the year 2019 in the subject Pedagogy - General, grade: 1.0, , language: English, abstract: This study was undertaken to find out what are the common experiences of students in participating extra-curricular activities. Also this study aims to know on how students cope up the difficulties they’ve experienced while joining extra-curricular activities. Only fifteen selected students are involved in the research, thus we recommend that they must gather more respondents in order for them to generalize the views and experiences of the students for having an extra-curricular in school. Based on the data that we gathered from all of our respondents that are involved in extra-curricular activities, many of them share the same experiences regarding their participation on ECA. They gain experiences that positively affect them and can be used to improve and enhance not only their grades but their skills and their personality as a student and as a person. For all the students who have extra-curricular activities, researchers recommend that if they will involve to this kind of activity, they should balance their time management in order to not affect their academic performance. In addition, for students who wants to have extra-curricular activities, we recommend that they should prioritize their academics first before other things so that they could not suffer difficulties especially when it comes to projects, assignments and tests.

Book Organized Activities As Contexts of Development

Download or read book Organized Activities As Contexts of Development written by Joseph L. Mahoney and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2005-03-23 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: School-aged children in the U.S. and other Western nations spend almost half of their waking hours in leisure activities. For some, out-of-school time is perceived as inconsequential or even counterproductive to the health and well-being of young persons. Recently, however, there has been a growing recognition that--along with family, peers, and school--the organized activities in which some youth participate during these hours are important contexts of emotional, social, and civic development. They provide opportunities for young persons to learn and develop competencies that are largely neglected by schools. At the same time, communities and national governments are now channeling considerable resources into creating organized activities for young people's out-of-school time. This volume brings together a multidisciplinary, international group of experts to provide conceptual, empirical, and policy-relevant advances in research on children's and adolescents' participation in the developmental contexts represented by extracurricular activities, and after-school and community programs. Organized Activities as Contexts of Development provides a handbook-like coverage of research in this new emerging field. It considers a broad developmental time-span from middle childhood through early adulthood, providing information on how motivation, participation, and developmental experiences change as youth get older. The contents cover one of the most salient topics in child and adolescent research, education, and social policy, placing consistent emphasis on developmental aspects and implications of organized activity participation for young persons. Representing contributors from several fields of study--psychology, criminal justice, leisure science, sociology, human development, education, prevention, and public policy--the book is designed to appeal to students and scholars in all these areas. Additionally, the volume is written to be of interest to professionals who administer programs and develop policy on youth.

Book excerpt: With over 70,000 copies of the first edition in print, this radical treatise on public education has been a New Society Publishers’ bestseller for 10 years! Thirty years in New York City’s public schools led John Gatto to the sad conclusion that compulsory schooling does little but teach young people to follow orders like cogs in an industrial machine. This second edition describes the wide-spread impact of the book and Gatto’s "guerrilla teaching." John Gatto has been a teacher for 30 years and is a recipient of the New York State Teacher of the Year award. Book Impact of Extracurricular Activity Involvement on Student Achievement at Three Tennessee Rural High Schools

Download or read book Impact of Extracurricular Activity Involvement on Student Achievement at Three Tennessee Rural High Schools written by Anthony James Bennett and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: School leaders continue to try to find ways to improve students’ GPA and test scores. Research has shown that extracurricular activities can have a positive effect on academic achievement. This study aimed at finding the sweet spot of the amount of participation in extracurricular activities in order to maximize students’ GPA and test scores. Eleventh grade students from three rural East Tennessee high schools were sampled to determine the appropriate amount of level of involvement in extracurricular activities. Student transcripts were used to determine the GPA of the students at the end of their 11th grade year, as well as their ACT score for March test during 11th grade. Students were placed into one of four categories based on their level of participation in extracurricular activities: non-participants, participation in 1–2 activities, participation in 3–4 activities, and participation in 5 or more activities. This researcher found that there is a significant difference in ACT scores for students who participate in extracurricular activities. In addition, this study found that there is a significant difference in students’ GPA for students who participate in extracurricular activities. This study determined that the sweet spot for maximizing academic achievement is participating in 3–4 extracurricular activities; therefore, school officials need to encourage students to participate in multiple extracurricular activities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The Impact of School Infrastructure on Learning: A Synthesis of the Evidence provides an excellent literature review of the resources that explore the areas of focus for improved student learning, particularly the aspiration for “accessible, well-built, child-centered, synergetic and fully realized learning environments.†? Written in a style which is both clear and accessible, it is a practical reference for senior government officials and professionals involved in the planning and design of educational facilities, as well as for educators and school leaders. --Yuri Belfali, Head of Division, Early Childhood and Schools, OECD Directorate for Education and Skills This is an important and welcome addition to the surprisingly small, evidence base on the impacts of school infrastructure given the capital investment involved. It will provide policy makers, practitioners, and those who are about to commission a new build with an important and comprehensive point of reference. The emphasis on safe and healthy spaces for teaching and learning is particularly welcome. --Harry Daniels, Professor of Education, Department of Education, Oxford University, UK This report offers a useful library of recent research to support the, connection between facility quality and student outcomes. At the same time, it also points to the unmet need for research to provide verifiable and reliable information on this connection. With such evidence, decisionmakers will be better positioned to accurately balance the allocation of limited resources among the multiple competing dimensions of school policy, including the construction and maintenance of the school facility. --David Lever, K-12 Facility Planner, Former Executive Director of the Interagency Committee on School Construction, Maryland Many planners and designers are seeking a succinct body of research defining both the issues surrounding the global planning of facilities as well as the educational outcomes based on the quality of the space provided. The authors have finally brought that body of evidence together in this well-structured report. The case for better educational facilities is clearly defined and resources are succinctly identified to stimulate the dialogue to come. We should all join this conversation to further the process of globally enhancing learning-environment quality! --David Schrader, AIA, Educational Facility Planner and Designer, Former Chairman of the Board of Directors, Association for Learning Environments (A4LE)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Schools in a post COVID era continue to struggle with student engagement with extracurricular activities. The purpose of this study was to identify the reasons student participation in extracurricular activities is on the decline with students in the middle school grades. A qualitative case study was conducted to research the question of, why middle school students do not participate in extracurricular activities? The use of extant data from an open-ended qualitative questionnaire provided to students was analyzed for themes and trends to determine the level of middle school student participation with extracurricular activities. Results were compared to previous research conducted within the same field. The results showed that student's participation in extracurricular activities is primarily a result of student perception of achieving social emotional needs, familial involvement, and availability of time. Therefore, a need to study this area to identify the reasons students participate in extracurricular activities is needed. The study concluded that student involvement in extracurricular activities is still lacking, for various reasons, as identified from this case study. Further research in the field of education on this topic would benefit school extracurricular programs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This article reviews the contemporary literature on extracurricular activity participation, focusing on patterns of participation, academic achievement, substance abuse, psychological adjustment, and young adult outcomes. Throughout the article, many different groups are referenced to, with the majority of those surveyed from various middle and high schools around the country. The review indicated that the associations between extracurricular activity participation and these outcomes are mostly positive, with some limitations due to unmonitored and unmeasurable variables. Adolescents who participated in ECAs reported higher grades, more positive attitudes toward schools, and higher academic aspirations once demographic characteristics and prior adjustment were controlled. In contrast, results were examined with information related to participation in team sports were linked to positive educational trajectories and to high rates of involvement in risky behaviors. The author suggests application for information from this review as well as future research including discovering new methods for measuring activities and attitudes related toward student's attitude and their school experiences."--leaf 3.
