Book Socially critical Environmental Education in Primary Classrooms

Download or read book Socially critical Environmental Education in Primary Classrooms written by Jane Edwards and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-26 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effectiveness of Education for Sustainable Development depends on the ability of schools and teachers to embrace pedagogies that reduce the gap between the rhetoric of education for the environment and the reality of classroom practices. This book responds to the need to better understand the nature of the relationships between agency and structure that contribute to the development of educational rhetoric-reality gaps in order to inform processes that most effectively facilitate pedagogical change. This book explores the issues of pedagogical change through the experiences of Australian primary school teachers faced with the challenge of implementing an environmental education program in which young students were positioned as active participants in the social processes from which environmentally sustainable practices could be developed. These teachers were required to adopt pedagogies that often represented the antithesis of their well-established teacher-directed approaches. Through the use of Anthony Giddens’ Theory of Structuration this book provides unique perspectives of the teacher mediated manner in which certain elements of structure and agency interrelate to enable and constrain classroom practices—essential understandings for school principals and educational policy developers who aim to effectively implement pedagogical change. This book also demonstrates that the Theory of Structuration provides a valuable ontological research framework, and provides social researchers with practical guidance for how to relate this theory to specific research issues.

Book A Case Study of the Integration of Environmental Learning in the Primary School Curriculum

Download or read book A Case Study of the Integration of Environmental Learning in the Primary School Curriculum written by Mmahlomotse Sekinah Sehlola and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In line with international developments, the Department of Education in South Africa (SA) recognises environmental education as a key vehicle to respond to the national and global environmental crisis (DoE, 2001, P. 3). For this reason, the post-1994 education provision sought to infuse environmental education into the new curriculum called Curriculum 2005. The White Paper on Education and Training (RSA, 1995) perceived environmental education as a means to a better quality of life for all people and argued that it should be integrated at all levels of the SA Education and Training system. The White Paper further stated that environmental education, involving an inter-disciplinary, integrated and active approach to learning, must be a vital element of all levels and programmes of the education and training system, in order to create environmentally literate and active citizens and ensure that all South Africans, present and future, enjoy a decent quality of life through the sustainable use of resources' (RSA, 1995, P. 22). How have the schools responded to this challenge by the new integration policy? How is the environmental learning provided for in the primary school curriculum across SA? What resources exist to make environmental policy workable in schools, and how are these resources mobilised and organised to promote learning? These and other questions formed the basis for the present inquiry An Opportunity to Learn (OTL) study was conducted to explore how one primary school in SA provides OTL about the environment. The main aim of the study was to understand the manner in which teachers integrate environmental learning in the school curriculum. A qualitative research approach was used as a mode of inquiry for this study. Interviews, classroom observations and document analysis were used as data collection methods. The findings of the study suggest that Sechaba Primary School has managed to integrate environmental learning in its curriculum through the help of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and other stakeholders. The research concluded by arguing that OTL about the environment appear to be enhanced where there are strong connections between the schools and NGOs. Specifically, the following set of recommendations was documented: First, local leadership and agency are required to pursue the various opportunities and resources to build the school's capacity for environmental learning. Schools should be encouraged to designate and support local leaders to take responsibility for driving the integration of environmental learning into their curriculum. Such integration is too important and maybe too demanding to be left to individual teachers independently in their own classrooms. Second, converting the latent capacity and/or physical and intellectual infrastructure for environmental learning into real OTL about the environment for the students will continue to remain a challenge for some of the teachers while others have managed the integration in some exemplary fashion. Opportunities for teachers to observe each other, plan together and work collaboratively on issues of integration should be created at school and district level. Third, it is critical that all teachers undergo in service training regarding the implementation of environmental education, and such training should provide teachers with enough time to learn. One of the major limitations of the Department of Education's programme of implementation of the new environmental learning policy has been the inability to provide teachers with enough time to learn and implement the new ideas of the revised national curriculum statement. Finally, it is important to reiterate the importance of providing adequate resources for implementation of environmental learning from the Department of Education. Having said that, however, the case of Sechaba has demonstrated how such resources can also be mobilised from elsewhere outside the system. Encouraging beneficial partnerships between schools and NGOs may in itself be a valuable resource to encourage many primary schools in SA for whom government resources in this field continue to remain inadequate.

Book Primary Student Teachers Experiences and Perceptions of the Provision of Environmental Education in Teacher Education

Download or read book Primary Student Teachers Experiences and Perceptions of the Provision of Environmental Education in Teacher Education written by Rebecca Miles and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This thesis is about pre-service teachers' perceptions and experiences of environmental education practice in pre-service primary education. In the field of environmental education, teacher education has been labelled the 'priority of priorities'. However, contrary to policy expectations, lack of pre-service teacher education has been identified as a significant barrier preventing and/or limiting the implementation of environmental education in primary schools. Research shows us that environmental education pedagogical practice in teacher education is scant. More specifically, research is now required to explain existing patterns of environmental education provision and to identify reasons as to why teacher education programs are failing to adequately prepare students in the area of environmental education. This thesis seeks to contribute to such ends."--Abstract.

Book Environmental Education in a Climate of Reform

Download or read book Environmental Education in a Climate of Reform written by Sylvia Christine Almeida and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-29 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "India is grappling with serious environmental issues that have been largely sparked by its galloping economy. As a measure of its seriousness to reduce the environmental impacts it has spearheaded numerous policy initiatives. One of the major thrusts of the proposed initiatives to curb environmental degradation has been to create an informed and well-educated citizenry. The federal mandates have triggered new curriculum policies and the compulsory teaching of environmental and sustainability education at all levels in all education institutions. This volume examines the policy practice conundrum. It looks at how national and international policy reforms reach practitioners – in this case teacher educators. Furthermore, it unravels how teacher educators understand environmental education, the ways in which they negotiate its demands on their busy schedules, what helps them in determining relevant issues within this and finally how they implement these policies in their everyday practices. It is evident from this book that while there have been some really well meaning development of policies, their impact on teacher educators’ practice, and therefore student teachers’ learning about Environmental Education is limited. The study showed that while these teacher educators had a clear understanding of the environment and saw the need/importance of incorporating Environmental Education in their daily practices they had very little scope to do so. There were numerous factors that constrained implementation. The book provides inputs on global policy practice gaps. It offers valuable insights to a global audience grappling with understanding the ways in which environmental education policies are put into practice in emerging economies like India. The final argument is thesis that while policy reforms are a step in the right direction they need to be backed up with strong implementation systems in order to be successful."“div>

Book Implementation of Environmental Education in Human and Social Sciences

Download or read book Implementation of Environmental Education in Human and Social Sciences written by Hlanganani Maggie Maluleke and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-05 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study on the implementation of environmental education aims to determine the perceptions of teachers from various primary schools with regard to the implementation of environmental education in the Human and Social Sciences. The study also aim to investigate factors that hamper the successful implementation of environmental education in primary schools. It is revealed in the introductory orientation of the study that attempts to inform and train teachers in curriculum development skills, activities and knowledge have not been fruitful. The findings and recommendations of this study are expected to improve teachers' interest in and awareness of environmental issues and to help them realise the need to integrate environmental education in primary schools. Based on the findings, it is recommended that curriculum developers should encourage teachers to become part of the curriculum development because they are the primary implementers who play primary roles during the process. Teacher support-mechanisms through workshops, seminars and teacher training programmes should be provided to in-service and pre-service teachers in order to ensure that all teachers are well skilled.

Book Teaching for a Sustainable World

Download or read book Teaching for a Sustainable World written by John Fien and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document is a curriculum for preservice teachers that attempts to illustrate how environmental education and development education are related and to provide practical assistance for teacher educators who would like to include these important fields in their programs. The project provides a focus for discussion of environmental and development education issues in teacher education in Australia. The particular audience for this project is preservice teacher education. However, the workshop modules are adapted easily for the continuing or inservice professional development of teachers. The workshops provided in this program may be used in three major ways: (1) the materials may be used as the basis for a linked program of professional and curriculum development; (2) the workshop materials may be infused, with or without local adaptations, into a range of courses, subjects, or units in a teacher education course; and (3) the workshops may be used as a set for a core or elective course in development and environmental education. Three workshops were written to be introductory. These workshops provide an introduction to environmental education, an introduction to development education, and a way of seeing the linkages and similarities between environmental and development education. These three workshops may be considered as a hub while the remaining 15 workshops are spokes that address particular themes and specialties in environmental and development education. These other themes discuss futures, science, educational resources, sustainability, population, and waste management among others. (DK)

Book An Exploration of Primary School Principals Perspectives on the Concept of Community as Applied to Catholic Schools

Download or read book An Exploration of Primary School Principals Perspectives on the Concept of Community as Applied to Catholic Schools written by John David Graham and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ÂĨ˜This research study explores the issue of school community leadership in Catholic primary schools within the Diocese of Lismore. In so doing it seeks to understand and reconstruct the school community leadership role of the principal. This topic is worthy of study as an analysis of public education in Australia has highlighted an enduring controversy regarding the 'Ĩ˜community'Ĩœ dimension of schooling. Further, the Catholic Church teaches that community is central to the nature of its schools. A comprehensive analysis of key literature in education, sociology, theology and leadership theory, revealed a number of key insights that informed the study. Here it is found that community is a contested, dense and widely appropriated sociological concept, of which the application to schools is problematic. Three major models of community could be applied to schools. Hence, there is a call for a careful and rigorous debate concerning the application of community to schools. Leadership and community exist in a binary relationship for Catholic school principals. Yet, the model of leadership required for community remains elusive. Finally, the principalship is in transition and suggestions toward a new model are being proposed...Ĩœ(Abstract)
