Book School Leadership Practices in Single Gender Middle Schools that Prepare Urban Students for College and Careers

Download or read book School Leadership Practices in Single Gender Middle Schools that Prepare Urban Students for College and Careers written by Cynthia Harris-Frederick and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the leadership practices of school principals, assistant principals, and school counselors in single gender middle schools that prepare urban students for college and careers. College and career readiness means that a high school graduate has the knowledge and skills in English and mathematics necessary to qualify for and succeed in entry-level, credit bearing postsecondary coursework without the need for remediation. Specifically, this study investigated whether there are differences between leadership styles in gender specific urban middle schools that provide experiences that put these students on the pathway to college. The results of this study determined that there are different learning styles in female and male only middle schools, thus, school leadership practices are gender specific. The academic and personal behaviors that are emphasized by school leadership is persistence so that students will face the challenges needed for pursuing college and careers. School structures and organization that position students for success in college and careers are mentoring, college campus visits, career week and summer programs. This study concludes with recommendations for ways that school leaders in gender specific or coeducational middle schools can establish and lead a college and career readiness culture.

Book Single gender Female Urban Middle Schools

Download or read book Single gender Female Urban Middle Schools written by Brian Christopher Lusk and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this study was to examine teachers' perceptions of the factors for successful implementation of a single-gender female, urban middle school. The literature suggests there are benefits and drawbacks to the single-gender schooling model. Moreover, research indicates there are fewer benefits for boys than girls. While the literature illuminates there are more benefits for girls, little research outlines the specific factors for the successful implementation of the all-girls, single-gender urban middle school. Teachers involved in this qualitative case study were able to identify factors, share their experiences, identify challenges, and ways in which they addressed the challenges in implementing the all-girls, single-gender urban middle school. The study findings revealed the critical factor of staffing the school with a committed group of educators motivated to meet the instructional needs of the girls. Additionally, perceptions for factors of successful implementation of the single-gender middle school included administrative leadership and expectations as essential components, as well as staffing, professional development, campus culture, and a pilot program. Teachers' experiences in implementing the single-gender middle school illustrated the importance of building positive relationships with the students and developing teaching strategies to meet the needs of the students. Teachers also faced challenges in implementing the all-girls school, including preparation and planning for lessons as well as consistency in procedures. Such challenges were addressed by building relationships, differentiating instruction, and creating an advisory period

This book was released on 2017-05-18 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do students’ social identities, particularly their gender, influence their leadership practices and development? Using Kimberlé Crenshaw’s concept of intersectionality as a framework, this volume discusses existing and emergent research on gender and leadership and offers key strategies and on how leadership educators can engage students in these topics and provide contemporary critical thinking on how gender and leadership inform one another. This volume examines: the ways intersectionality can be used as a lens for gender and leadership, key considerations for developing and advancing leadership among women, men, and trans* students, programs and experiences grounded in critical self-reflection and leadership learning among students of all genders, and opportunities for leadership educators to navigate topics of gender and leadership, emphasizing their own self-work and avenues for affecting positive change. Contributing scholars share examples that are developmentally appropriate for high school and college students. This work is designed with leadership educators in mind, emphasizing theory into practice and highlighting the ways that leadership and gender can promote holistic, transformative learning for all students. The Jossey-Bass quarterly report series New Directions for Student Leadership explores leadership concepts and pedagogical topics of interest to high school and college leadership educators. Issues are grounded in scholarship and feature practical applications and best practices in youth and adult leadership education.

Book Collaborative Leadership Practices in Middle Schools to Improve Student Learning in English Language Arts and Math

Download or read book Collaborative Leadership Practices in Middle Schools to Improve Student Learning in English Language Arts and Math written by Minerva Martinez-Zanca and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last few decades, there have been numerous government mandated school reform efforts funded by federal, state, and local governments to turn around failing schools. School districts in the NYCDOE endorse professional learning communities to help teachers obtain the knowledge and skills that can lead to increased educator effectiveness and improved results for students. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how the implementation of the professional development (PD) provided to English Language Arts (ELA) and math middle school teachers in professional learning communities (PLCs) in two high needs, under resourced, urban districts enabled teachers to create the guiding coalition to bring about change that affects teacher practice and helps improve student achievement. Research participants included two middle school principals, seven middle school teachers of ELA and math, and two PLCs. The study was guided by three research questions. Data were collected through a document review, in-person interviews, and observations of PLC interactions at the participants' middle schools. The findings that emerged included the importance of collaboration and teamwork, common planning time, content area and grade level teams, differentiated PD, peer observation and feedback, and using data to drive instruction. School leaders and teachers agree that professional learning communities are valuable sources of professional study and subsequent capacity building. They understand that having the time within their workday to strategize with their colleagues prepares them to improve outcomes for both adult and student learners. Implications for future research include investigating methods that support the professional development of veteran teachers, teachers who may have different perspectives, and less experienced leaders, so that they can make significant and sustainable contributions to PLCs.

This important new book addresses head-on the critical national concern of educating an ever-more diverse student population. Visionary Middle Schools describes how three schools developed unique local solutions that were responsive to their particular students, to their cultures, and to their district and state mandates. Each school is organized around a different school-wide instructional practice, a "signature practice" that reflects that school's particular beliefs about learning. Despite obstacles such as poverty, low English-language proficiency, and new immigrant status, each of these schools is the strongest performing in their respective districts and presents approaches and lessons of relevance to urban schools across the country.

Book Partnerships for Leadership Preparation and Development

Download or read book Partnerships for Leadership Preparation and Development written by Frances K. Kochan and published by IAP. This book was released on 2021-01-01 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a large body of research that supports the reality that school leaders make a significant contribution to the success of schools and the students in them. Additionally, there is strong agreement among and between researchers and state and national educational leadership associations that educational leadership preparation and development should be created and implemented within university/school partnerships. Although institutions engage in forming university/school partnerships for varied reasons, research on the extent to which these partnerships exist; their organizational structures and processes; their implementation and effectiveness; and elements that foster and hinder their success is limited. Perhaps more importantly, there is not a widely accepted, research-based model of such partnerships that practitioners and researchers can use to guide the development and assessment of these partnership endeavors and upon which they can conduct effective research. This book seeks to fill these gaps. It presents the purposes, processes, practices and outcomes of eleven university/school partnerships focused on school leadership preparation and/or development. Each chapter presents an overview of the partnership, elements that fostered and hindered partnership success, and lessons learned. The book concludes with a chapter that summarizes findings across all chapters and presents a school/university partnership model that can be used by those interested in forming, improving or researching similar partnership endeavors. There are no similar resources available in the field. Thus, this book makes an important contribution to the literature and to the world of practice and research. Praise for Partnerships for Leadership Preparation and Development: Facilitators, Barriers and Models for Change: "Kochan, Reames and Griggs bring together the latest research and eleven case examples of university-practice partnerships for school leadership preparation and development. The volume provides keen insights into practices that can make or break an effective partnership, making it a valuable resource for those seeking to develop new partnerships, to enhance existing ones, and to engage in research on this topic. For those in the throes of redesign or leadership program improvement, it is an essential read." Michelle D. Young, Professor and Dean, Loyola Marymount University UCEA Executive Director Emeritus "Partnerships for Leadership Preparation and Development is destined to become an indispensable “go-to” resource for educators who are contemplating or already engaged in school-university partnerships. Rich details are provided about a variety of partnerships operating for aspiring and practicing schools administrators, with special attention to preparing and developing underserved populations for educational leadership roles. The book not only captures the realities of these collaborative efforts, but also provides a roadmap for anticipating the important relational, organizational, and operational processes required for partnership success." Book A Study of Urban Middle School Teachers Reports on how Instruction in Character Education Contributes to Students Leadership Practices

Download or read book A Study of Urban Middle School Teachers Reports on how Instruction in Character Education Contributes to Students Leadership Practices written by Henry H. Haye and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This qualitative study investigated urban middle school teachers' reports regarding the relationship between character education and student leadership practices of being honest, forward-looking, being inspiring, and being competent. This study utilized a conceptual framework derived from Kouzes' and Posner's (2002, 2008) extensive research, which uncovered the top four character practices expected of leaders. These practices are: honesty, forward-looking, being inspiring, and being competent. These practices are also embedded in urban middle school character education curriculum. The study's participants were twelve certified middle school teachers drawn from eight urban schools, located in a district in Northeastern United States. Each participant had taught in the school district for over one year. Individual interviews were done with participants to solicit reports regarding the aforementioned students. leadership practices. Data ascertained from urban middle school teachers' reports revealed that the sociocultural context of the school and surrounding community, students' motivation to succeed academically and socially, and teachers' beliefs regarding their instructional and social interactions with students were related to character education and the development of students' leadership practices. Recommendations for practice were designed to help urban middle school administrators and teachers in developing urban middles school students' leadership practices. Urban middle school teachers should receive on-going professional development or in-service training in character education and student leadership practices. A qualitative interview study with middle school administrators should be conducted to determine the amount of emphasis placed on character education. Teachers play a significant role in imparting character education instruction to students. Their reports, therefore, are paramount to assessing character education in their respective schools. The findings from this study are relevant to urban middle school administrators and teachers, in their quest to develop student leaders.

Book Leadership Practices that Improve the Achievement of African American Students in Urban Schools

Download or read book Leadership Practices that Improve the Achievement of African American Students in Urban Schools written by and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author examined the leadership practices and processes used to improve the achievement of African American students at William Dandy Middle School Middle School, in the Broward School District of Ft. Lauderdale, FL. The researcher explored the functions of the principal, teachers, and support staff using qualitative research techniques, including semi-structured individual and focus group interviews, classroom observations, and document reviews. Research questions addressed the nature of curricula, instruction, and relationships at the school and the roles leaders played in influencing those factors. The findings suggest that curricula at the school were focused on challenging standards, across broad curricular areas (including science, mathematics, engineering, and science), with an emphasis on higher-order thinking skills. Instruction featured high levels of student engagement and high rates of student feedback and interaction. The relationships between students and teachers were characterized by teacher concern for each student's general being, teacher effort to ensure each student's academic success, as well as efforts to help students succeed in areas beyond academics. Leaders at Dandy Middle School influenced these factors through the provision of intensive professional development, frequent teacher collaboration, and regular classroom observations and feedback to teachers. The study describes implications for leaders, implications for leadership preparation, and implications for future research.

Book A Look at Middle Schools System Leadership Best Practices in Social Emotional Learning Cultural Climate and Mental Health Awareness

Download or read book A Look at Middle Schools System Leadership Best Practices in Social Emotional Learning Cultural Climate and Mental Health Awareness written by Milagros Dueno and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social and emotional learning (SEL) in schools is becoming a major theme in the field of education. School administrators and teachers are acknowledging a need to response and support students' social and emotional learning/mental health growth along with their academics progress. Middle school adolescent students in grades six through eight are in a developmental stage during which there are changes in their physical, emotional and social development. School leaders that promote and provide their middle school students with the resources to work on interpersonal and social skills could be particularly beneficial and supportive to their ability to lead healthy lives. In this qualitative study, the author based the research on the purpose statement and research questions; the purpose of this research was to investigate the different strategies and prevention techniques that system leaders in middle schools currently use in the area of social emotional learning, cultural and mental health responsiveness in their schools and across their districts. Examining the implementation of the research strategies in the middle schools and district levels through the use of interviews of system leaders in the three to six schools and connect it to the qualitative comparative study. The objective of the current research was to address what SEL programs are used in the schools to help with social emotional learning and mental health needs of students. Specifically, the research intended to address the following questions: To what extent do certain middle school leadership practices produce a negative or positive school climate? To what extent do leadership practices promote social/emotional and mental health responsiveness? To what extent do superintendents support middle school leaders in their practice to promote social/emotional learning and mental health responsiveness? And To what extent do districts allow school leaders to utilize human and financial resources in a manner that best meets the needs of their schools and community? For this research, the use of the qualitative comparative case study served as the main methodology for this research. The use of interviews was conducted on six schools administrators only from New York City, Upstate New York and Long Island. Data was coded and examined by some of these themes: 1) Communication and Collaboration; 2) Trust; 3) Parent engagement; 4) Professional development. Data was collected through interviews of middle school administrators. Results of this research found that not all of the six middle schools in the distinct three demographic locations have school programs that implemented SEL programming. The findings revealed that the majority of those schools believe SEL to positively affect many facets of their school including academic success of the students, with a high regard for physical and emotional safety, and the relationship between the students and teachers engagement. Strategies the participating schools used to implement SEL programming were also discovered in this study. These consist of having created their own SEL program with the use of other SEL intervention program such as Brainpower, Single Shepard and PBIS (Positive Behavioral Intervention Strategies). The need for implementation of SEL programs throughout the schools was found to be an essential missing piece. Results of this study also indicated allocating funds and sufficient time to SEL programming once it started. Yet another result of this research was the need for professional development for all staff working with students in understanding and knowing how to use SEL in the curriculum.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preparing Principals for a Changing World provides a hands-on resource for creating and implementing effective policies and programs for developing expert school leaders. Written by acclaimed author and educator Linda Darling-Hammond and experts Debra Meyerson, Michelle LaPointe, and Margaret Terry Orr, this important book examines the characteristics of successful educational leadership programs and offers concrete recommendations to improve programs nationwide. In a study funded by the Wallace Foundation, Darling-Hammond and the team examined eight exemplary principal development programs, as well as state policies and principals' experiences across the country. Using the data from the study, they reveal how successful programs are structured, the skills and knowledge participants gain, and what they are able to do in practice as school leaders as a result. What do these exemplary programs have in common? Aggressive recruitment; close ties with schools in the community; on-the-ground training under the wing of expert principals, and a strong emphasis on the cutting-edge theories of instructional and transformational leadership. In addition to highlighting the programs' similarities, the study also explains the differences among the programs and sheds light on the effectiveness of approaches and models from different states and contexts?East, West, North, and South; urban and rural; pre-service and in-service. The authors analyze program outcomes for principals and their schools, including illustrative case studies and educators' voices on the influence of programs' strategies for recruitment, internships, mentoring, and coursework. The ideas and suggestions outlined in Preparing Principals for a Changing World are presented with the goal of increasing the number of highly qualified, thoughtful, and innovative educational leaders.
