This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New School History of the United States of America Eleven years and more have elapsed since the first publication of this text-book. This period has witnessed a series of grave transactions, and a surprising increase of the population, produci tions, and wealth of the country. It seemed indispensable to extend the narrative to the completion of the century since the surrender of the British at Yorktown assured American Independence. To do this, it was necessary to contract the story throughout, so that the volume might be kept within suitable limits. Matters of secondary importance have been omitted, and greater brevity of statement has been introduced where practicable, particularly in the earlier periods and the War of Secession. There is no longer necessity or propriety in treating the late mournful struggle with the same fulness as before. Moreover, the wondrous perspective of time has already diminished the prominence of many events. And has suffered minor details to melt into the haze of the receding landscape. Book History of the United States of America

Download or read book History of the United States of America written by Charles Augustus Goodrich and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the United States of America: For the Use of Schools The History of the United States, by Charles A. Goodrich, has been too long and too favorably known to the public to' need any special introduction. But the country has passed through the most momentous years of its history since the last edition of that excellent and popular work was prepared, and to continue it to the present time, and yet keep the book Within the proper limits of a text-book for schools, it has been necessary to rearrange and rewrite the earlier chapters to such an extent that the present revision differs as much from former editions as several of the school histories in common use differ from each other. In this edition the text is presented in type of two sizes. The matter in the larger type, by itself; forms a connected history, and may be sufficient for schools in which but a limited time can be devoted to the study; that in the smaller type goes more into detail, and may be made a part of the lessons for rigid preparation, or be merely read in connection with the closer study of the larger type, or be omitted altogether, at the option of the teacher. At the end of each Period is given a general view of the condition, not only of the original thirteen colonies, or what was, at the time, the United States, but of what has since been annexed. This book was released on 2018-03-08 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A School History of the United States It has been the aim of the writer to fulfill this condition. At the same time an attempt has been made to have the narrative vivid in order that the pupil may not escape the impression that American History is an interesting move ment, and that, whether in co6peration or in collision, men are always struggling to attain great ends. This quality seizes upon the human and dramatic feelings of the child and holds his interest in the subject. As a result the people who inhabit the world of history are made akin to those who are in action in the real world around him. To encourage this interest and to enable the pupil to enter more fully into the spirit of the past, important and typical events have been frequently made to stand out vividly by a somewhat full description To impress great historical scenes upon the mind of the young is as important as to paint them on canvas. As a further stimulus to the sympathetic and constructive im agination, and as an appeal to the higher tastes, ten full-page illustrations in colors have been introduced. These illustrate ten of the most dramatic or important events in American History and serve as historical milestones to the pupil. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School History of the United States It is also thought that some books by Southern authors are either unsuitable for the schoolroom, or lose their value by an attempt to be neutral, and hence colorless, on the great questions that have divided the sections, and that, compiling from Northern histories, they have fallen into many of their errors. For some twenty years I have been collecting material and pre paring myself for the task, studying earnestly not only the best of the current histories, but original sources of information as well, and diligently seeking to reach the exact truth on all disputed points. Born, reared, and educated on Southern soil, following for four years with youthful devotion the battle-flag of the Southern Confed cracy, for twelve years Secretary of the Southern Historical Society, and during all of these years devoting time and close attention to American history, I may claim that I have had some facilities for ascertaining facts, and some qualifications for preparing, a history of the United States which shall be acceptable to the South, and fit to be taught in her schools. Download or read book A History of the United States Classic Reprint written by William C. Doub and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the United States During recent years there has been much written and much said about making the study of history and civics in the ele mentary schools something more than committing to memory dates, facts and events. Many newspapers and educational journals and many of those educators Who talk publicly on school questions have criticised severely the results secured from the time devoted to history and civics in the grammar schools. The method used and the lack of proper preparation on the part of the teacher have been held responsible for the poor results secured in these subjects. It has been customary to hold the teacher responsible for the method used and for her poor preparation, and thus to place the entire blame on her. Many have promptly and justly replied that they cannot be expected to expend from two to three thousand dollars in securing a higher education for the purpose of receiving the small salaries paid in the elementary schools. They have also replied - and this is even more to the point - that not being specialists in history and civics, they cannot, With any degree of success, teach these subjects by the topical method When every grammar school history text-book in print adopts, almost entirely, the cut and-dried chronological-event method. In relation to all these conditions, special attention is called to the fact that in this book the topical treatment is used Without any reserve What ever. No teacher can use this book as a text-book and use any other than the topical method, and no pupil can study this book without becoming interested in the real spirit of our history and having cultivated in him the desire to perform to the best of his ability the duties of American citizenship. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New History of the United States of America: For the Use of Schools The necessity for some new History of the United States, for the use of schools, has been long felt, and frequently expressed by experienced teachers; and it is with the hope of supplying some of those deficiencies, of which so many complain, that the author has been stimulated to prepare the following work. If any impressive generalization of well-esta blished facts can be presented if an unbroken narrative can be preserved, interesting in its details and instructive in its moral lessons - and, especially, if the youthful mind can be inspired with patriotic sentiments and increased veneration for the principles, labours, and struggles of our ancestors: no more useful contribution to the cause of popular education can possibly be made. Such have been the objects aimed at by the author, and it now remains with the public to decide whether these have been attained.
