Book excerpt: Excerpt from A School History of England In the selection of materials an attempt has been made to excite an interest that shall stimulate the pupil to a search for further knowledge. To this end there is given, in the appendix, a list of books easily accessible, some of which should be in every class-room where English history is taught. It is a good rule never to read less than two accounts of the same event. This provides training in comparison, discrim ination, and judgment, thereby accomplishing the main objects of historical study. The questions and topics for home reading that are appended to each section are intended to encourage independent thought and to supplement the work of the class-room. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High School History of England IN the small space allowed me in this little book, I have tried to set before young readers a connected history of the rise and development of England. While giving as far as possible the chief facts required by students, I have been especially anxious to present a vivid picture of the life, the difficulties, and the achieve ments of our ancestors showing how our laws, our constitution, our trade, and our colonies have arisen. If this short sketch opens the way to the study of more comprehensive histories, leading those now growing up into citizens of a Widespread empire to take a lively interest in the past, present, and future of our nation, it will have done its work. Some of them are mere ledges of rock that can serve only as nest ing-places for sea-birds. Some of them, like the Shetlands and the Orkneys, the Hebrides, Skye, Mull, the Isle of Man, and the Isle of Wight, are large enough to furnish food and Shelter to human beings, and have been inhabited from time immemorial. Two only, however, Great Britain and Ireland, are of sufficient importance to figure in the world's history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of England for Junior Classes In drawing up these outlines of English History for junior classes, it has been my object to produce a readable and connected narrative of the most important events in the history of our country, without any political, theological, or ecclesiastical bias, which dis figures so many of our school histories, and renders them unsuitable to F be put into the hands Of the young. For this reason I have confined myself as much as possible to a simple statement of facts, from which the readers, if they are sufficiently thoughtful, or are guided by intelligent teachers; may draw their own lessons and inferences. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Landmarks of the History of England My Dear Macready, As you retain the same interest in the education and improvement of your countrymen which you so actively promoted by the finest and most intellectual dramatic efforts of modem times, I dedicate to you this little volume, which contains the substance of a course of lectures delivered to the Mechanics' Institute of this district. They are now presented in the more ambitious form of "Chapters," but I have not changed the style of their composition, and have only diminished such portions of their local colouring as made them peculiarly applicable to my own friends. It is with the hope of their being useful to other institutions of the same kind, and generally to persons who have not time for larger and deeper histories, that I have published them in this cheap and commodious form. I know you will forgive the faults of the York from friendship to the author; and I trust others will be equally benevolent for the sake of the cause to which it is devoted. Believe me, my dear Macready, Ever yours truly, James White. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Making of the English Nation Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Making of the English Nation Classic Reprint written by C. G. Robertson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Making of the English Nation There are so many School Histories of England already in existence, that it may perhaps seem presumptuous on the part of the authors of this series to add six volumes more to the number. But they have their defence: the "Oxford Manuals of English History" are intended to serve a particular purpose. There are several good general histories already in use, and there are a considerable number of scattered 'epochs' or 'periods'. But there seems still to be room for a set of books which shall combine the virtues of both these classes. Schools often wish to take up only a certain portion of the history of England, and find one of the large general histories too bulky for their use. On the other hand, if they employ one of the isolated 'epochs' to which allusion has been made, they find in most cases that there is no succeeding work on the same scale and lines from which the scholar can continue his study and pass on to the next period, without a break in the continuity of his knowledge. The object of the present series is to provide a set of historical manuals of a convenient size, and at a very moderate price. Each part is complete in itself, but as the volumes will be carefully fitted on to each other, so that the whole form together a single continuous history of England, it will be possible to use any two or more of them in successive terms or years at the option of the instructor. Book An Introduction to the Industrial and Social History of England Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-03-03 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Industrial and Social History of England This text-book is intended for college and high-school classes. Most of the facts stated in it have become, through the researches and publications of recent years, such commonplace knowledge that a reference to authority in each case has not seemed meces sary. Statements on more doubtful points, and such personal opinions as I have had occasion to express, although not sup ported by references, are based on a somewhat careful study of the sources. To each chapter is subjoined a bibliographical paragraph with the titles of the most important secondary authorities. These works will furnish a fuller account of the matters that have been treated in outline in this book, indicate the original sources, and give opportunity and suggestions for further study. An introductory chapter and a series of narra tive paragraphs prefixed to other chapters are given with the object of correlating matters of economic and social history with other aspects of the life of the nation. My obligation and gratitude are due, as are those of all later students', to the group of scholars who have within our own time laid the foundations of the study of economic history, and whose names and books will be found referred to in the bibliographical paragraphs.
