Book excerpt: Excerpt from School History of Berks County in Pennsylvania The author of this book compiled "The History of Berks County," and in 1885 caused it to be published in a royal octavo volume of 1200 pages. Immediately afterward, certain teachers of our public schools suggested to him the utility of compiling a history for the use of the schools, in order to enable the children of the county to acquire special knowledge of their own locality, in which they were mostly interested, as well as general knowledge of this entire country and of foreign countries. It was believed that in this way they would be led to read of and investigate matters and things in the surrounding country with which they were now, or would shortly become, more immediately connected, and also to exercise their perceptive faculties in their daily school life, rather than their imagination; from which they could then be led, as inclination or necessity might dictate, into larger divisions of territory and into more comprehensive knowledge, after their faculties had become sufficiently matured to be interested in them, and more especially to understand them; and it was further believed that knowledge of this kind, thus acquired, would develop a tendency to acquire general historical knowledge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poetical History of Berks County To view the hardships of the people In their rude habitations And see them struggle in their trials For many generations. I want to give you a pen picture, That all of you may know, The drear condition of Old Berks Two hundred years ago. Indians. Two hundred years ago! Old Berks Was owned and peopled then By a degraded, barbarous race Of copper colored men. The Delawares, the owners then. Divided as a nation, Into the Turkey, Turtle, Wolf, According to location. They lived in towns and villages Near by a flowing spring, And every Indian burg and town Was governed by a king. They lived in wigwams built of sticks, Shaped somewhat like a cone, And covered with raw hides and bark Without the use of stone. They had to have warm clothes and shoes Against the winters cold, And yet they had no markets where These articles were sold. They plowed and dug, and planted corn. Without a horse or mule. And they had not for many years A steel or iron tool. They had no looms to make their cloth For articles of wear. They tanned the skins of animals Such as the deer and bear. They had no matches to strike Are, For warming in cold weather, Whene'er they were in want of flame They rubbed two sticks together. Book History of the Counties of Berks and Lebanon Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of the Counties of Berks and Lebanon Classic Reprint written by Israel Daniel Rupp and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Counties of Berks and Lebanon The writer made no attempt in this compilation, as can he done in regular history, in which causes and effects are minutely given, to preserve a consecutive chronological arrangement of facts; it was not his design to do so; he simply aimed at embodying in a convenient form, notices of the leading incidents that occurred in Berks and Lebanon, from their earliest settlements; and with that view, preserved, as far as practicable, original documents, letters, extracts, etc., knowing that there are always read with much interest by the great majority. The design of this work is to preserve the most interesting local facts relating to the Indians who inhabited this region of country, the numerous sanguinary massacres committed by them; to give brief historical sketches of the first Swedish, Welsh, French, German, Irish, and English settlers, and as far as practicable, to preserve the names of those who resided a century ago, within the limits of these counties, and to occasionally intersperse biographical sketches of some of the pioneers or their immediate descendants, of ministers of the gospel, so far as they had been connected with the church in these counties, &c. How far this has been done, is left to the candid reader to say. Nothing has been left undone on the part of the compiler, to collect facts from authentic sources and arrange them according to the best of his judgment. In most cases the Colonial Record 5, the Pennsylvania Archives and the collections of the Pennsylvania Historical Society have furnished the data. Most of the sketches deal with colonial life, because the indi vidual, the hero, for whom the young have most regard, grows less prominent in the increasingly complex social and institutional life of the state. The reader will prize all the more his own rich social, political, educational, and religious environment after be coming familiar with the struggles of an ancestry not so highly favored. The complex life of to-day will be more clearly com prehended from a view of the initial forces producing it.
