Book Government Regulation of the Employment Relationship

Download or read book Government Regulation of the Employment Relationship written by Bruce E. Kaufman and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since the emergence of industrial relations as a field in the late 1920s, three different approaches to labor problems have been focal points for research and debate, according to Bruce E. Kaufman. What he refers to as "employers" solutions involve personnel management; workers rely on unionism and collective bargaining; and the third component, the community, depends on government regulation in the form of protective labor legislation and social insurance programs. Kaufman contends that government regulation has contributed significantly to the remarkable progress made during the twentieth century in achieving a more productive and humane workplace. As labor problems have changed, debate about the efficacy of government regulation has continued. In this volume, some of the most distinguished scholars in industrial relations frame the current issues, develop theoretical insights, and provide an objective review of the empirical evidence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: precise, appeared until the recent crisis - to many Americans from the East of America's America, as the whole of America seemed to Europeans of a century ago: extreme and strange, full of violent contrasts, contradictory, over-advanced, neo primitive and savage, a land where everything is possible, the hippies and the religious-political fundamentalism of the Orange County, Marcuse, Angela Davis and Norman Brown, Esalen, the new consciousness. Alan Watts and Carlos Castaneda, as well as Patricia Hearst and the Sym bionese Liberation Army, Richard Nixon and his men, the Satan religion, outrageous crimes such as that of the Manson "family" and incredibly scan dalous business deals. For better or worse, California appears as a sort of preview of the European society of the future: the land of the Western World with the greatest immigration and population growth, with enormous cities which in the textbooks of your childhood were hardly even mentioned, e.g. Los Angeles, or were not mentioned at all, as in the case of San Diego and San Jose, a considerable urban development which has taken place almost overnight.

Book Labor Economics and Industrial Relations

Download or read book Labor Economics and Industrial Relations written by Clark Kerr and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In twenty-three original essays this book surveys the course of labor economics over the more than two centuries since the publication of Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations. It fully examines the contending theories, changing environmental contexts, evolving issues, and varied policies affecting labor's participation in the economy. Beginning with George P. Shultz, who provides the foreword, the contributors are among the most distinguished scholars in labor economics and industrial relations. These essays represent some of their finest work and apply the ideas for which they are best known. Highlights include John T. Dunlop on internal labor markets, John Kenneth Galbraith on power relationships in the economy, Robert M. Solow on explanation of unemployment, Jacob Mincer on human capital, Lloyd G. Reynolds on labor in developing countries, Richard A. Lester on wage differentials, Edward F. Denison on productivity, Richard Freeman on union/non-union differentials, F. Ray Marshall on human resource development, and Thomas A. Kochan on policy making. While the intellectual framework of the book looks partly to the past - explaining the labor factor in classical and neoclassical systems - its emphasis is on contemporary problems that will figure prominently in future developments, such as the operation of internal labor markets, dispute resolution, concession bargaining, equal employment opportunity, and individual labor contracting. This book is required reading for students and scholars of labor economics.
