Book School Effects on Educational Achievement in Mathematics and Science 1985 86

Download or read book School Effects on Educational Achievement in Mathematics and Science 1985 86 written by Carolyn L. Arnold and published by Department of Education Office of Educational. This book was released on 1992 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report examines the effects of both student and school characteristics on mathematics and science achievement levels in the third, seventh, and eleventh grades using data from the 1985-86 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). Analyses feature hierarchical linear models (HLM), a regression-like statistical technique that addresses the problem of students nested within schools by directly modeling within- and between-schools variation in achievement. Additionally, HLM allows examination of the impact of school characteristics on the relationship between student characteristics and achievement within schools. Following an executive summary, this report contains: (1) an introduction including information on the background and purpose of the study, a description of data sources and variables used in the analyses, and an outline of the methodological approach utilized; (2) a summary of the effects of school characteristics on mathematics achievement for each of the three grades with respect to the within-school model and the five between-school models; (3) a summary of the effects of school characteristics on science achievement for each of the three grades with respect to the within-school model and the five between-school models, enlarged with a comparison of mathematics and science results; (4) an extensive discussion of the findings in relation to methodological goals, grade level differences, school size, disassociation of socio-economic influences from race-ethnicity, tracking, gender differences, and teacher characteristics; and (5) appendices that include technical notes for the variables and the HLM methodology, descriptive statistics for selected characteristics, and supporting tables for the HLM results. In general, the school characteristics examined in the analyses provided better explanations for average achievement between schools than they did for the effects of gender, race-ethnicity, and socioeconomic status on achievement. Book National Assessment of Educational Progress Proficiency in Mathematics and Science 1985 86

Download or read book National Assessment of Educational Progress Proficiency in Mathematics and Science 1985 86 written by Valerie E. Lee and published by National Catholic Education Assn. This book was released on 1989-01-01 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this report, the mathematics and science proficiency of students in third, seventh, and eleventh grades in Catholic schools was compared to the national average of the 1985-86 National Assessment of Mathematics and Science. The introduction describes the differences in reading/writing and mathematics/science that the National Assessment of Educational Progress reports and the background characteristics of Catholic and public schools. Included in the second chapter are the proficienies related to: (1) demographic characteristics and family background; (2) school characteristics; (3) student behavior; (4) course work in computer, mathematics and science by eleventh-graders; and (5) social differences in course work. This paper concludes that Catholic school mathematics and science proficiency levels at grades three, seven, and eleven are above those of public school students. The differences between students in Catholic and public schools which relate to the association between family background and course-taking, and academic proficiency are summarized. Five levels of mathematics and science proficiency are appended. (YP)

Book Religion Education and Academic Success

Download or read book Religion Education and Academic Success written by William Jeynes and published by IAP. This book was released on 2003-08-01 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this book is to examine the relationship between religion and academic success, both historically and in modern society. Very few books are dedicated to examining this very important topic. In addition, to this date there has never been a published quantitative meta-analysis examining the effects of religiosity and religious schools on academic outcomes. It is my hope that this book will be a useful tool for educators, researchers, professors, and parents who desire to examine this relevant and practical area of study. Our nation owes much of its educational foundation to the religious orientation of many of its founders, educational pioneers, and educational reformers. Although educational historians used to focus on the religious and moral orientation of people like Noah Webster, Horace Mann, Johann Pestalozzi, Emma Willard, Friedrich Froebel, and many others, contemporary educational historians inappropriately omit the religious roots of these individuals.
