Terminological references frequently change and receive attention, but foci regarding professional preparedness, prevalence of service delivery, referral and follow up receive less attention. This research was designed as an initial and specific inquiry of school counselors' perceptions, roles and experiences with students with behavioral emotional disabilities. Areas of inquiry included their educational background, level of knowledge, as well as interest in professional development to acquire knowledge and skills. Meeting the needs of all students is paramount in education, particulary students who experience behavioral and emotional challenges while learning.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine to what extent school counselors work with students with behavioral emotional disorders (BED), and feel prepared to provide counseling for these students. To that end, a survey was developed to poll the perceptions and experiences of North Carolina school counselors in the areas of: (a) level of involvement with students with BED; (b) preparedness to provide counseling for these students; (c) level of knowledge in understanding BED; and (d) interest in professional development of specialization in BED. The participants of this study were surveyed at the 2003 North Carolina School Counselors Association conference. A total of 1200 surveys were distributed in the registration packets. Of that number, 209 individuals responded. Respondents believed they were educationally prepared to provide counseling services for students with BED; however, there were identified discrepancies in their familiarity with specific BED competencies (i.e., educational terminology and definitions specific to BED; advantages and disadvantages of BED placement options and services; and legal, judicial, and educational systems serving BED students). Less than half perceived themselves as having average to above average knowledge of specific BED competencies as outlined by the Council for Exceptional Students (1995) in the following areas of knowledge: a) general, b) foundational, c) assessment skills, and d) collaboration and networking. Respondents expressed interest in pursuing professional development training or specialization in BED.
