Book excerpt: School-business partnerships can be a valuable supplement to the public education system, especially in an era of limited resources. The business and industrial community can provide support for schools in a number of ways, including awards to students and teachers, scholarships, equipment loans, on-the-job training, curriculum revision, part-time employment, and direct participation in instruction. To establish such a partnership, principals and business people should take the following steps: (1) clarify their own and each other's expectations; (2) identify firms with desired expertise; (3) hold a well-planned meeting or luncheon for firm representatives, faculty, parents, and students; (4) establish a time-line with desired outcomes and specific activities; (5) appoint a project coordinator; and (6) agree on a method of evaluation. Examples are provided of six successful partnership programs, along with suggestions for additional resources (such as senior citizens and small business people). The program should optimally provide learning opportunities for all students, both college-bound and non-college-bound. (TE)

Book excerpt: Recent literature indicates that most public schools have some manner of partnership with businesses (DeHaviland Associates, 2007; Orsini, 2016; Rivkin et al., 2014); however, there is criticism that such partnerships lack clear evidence of positive student outcomes and that the products are simply not worth the expense and effort used to construct and maintain them (Brent & Lunden, 2009). The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the practices of school districts in the Capital Region of New York State in establishing relationships with for-profit businesses. Specifically, the research focused on the purposes and impact of these partnerships as well as the logistical and ethical obstacles that stand in the way of success. The research focused on three case studies of school districts with established partnerships as identified by experts in the field. Data were gathered through interviews, documents, and observations of school-business interactions. Key findings included that districts established partnerships for the purpose of authentically addressing 21st century skills, professional learning, and community relations. It was also found that the districts studied did not establish clear measurements for success on the impact of school-business partnerships and had few policies or processes in place to guard against ethical dangers or measure partnership success. From these findings, it was suggested that: 1) State legislation should focus on encouraging business to be co-equal partners with schools; 2) Boards of Education should adopt baseline policies safeguarding students; 3) Boards of Education should adopt policies to ensure equal access to experiential learning; 4) school districts should establish clear goals for accountability; 5) school districts should establish formal processes for entering partnerships; and 6) school districts should work to establish true collaborative partnerships with businesses. It was also recommended that future research should expand the scope of this study, limit the focus to specific kinds of partnerships, and shift to the study of how schools can make partnerships better instead of focusing on whether or not they should take place.

Though some employers cited the possibility of recruiting human capital as a motivator, it was not their main reason for working with schools. Overwhelmingly, employers stated that they simply had a desire to contribute to their communities by helping ensure youth were well prepared for jobs and college. While teachers and administrators cited more material reasons for partnering, those reasons were imperative for making sure students received appropriate training. Administrators and teachers believed employers could assist them with ensuring course curricula were updated and relevant. They also desired to have businesses help meet needs that their budgets could not. Often, business partners contributed equipment, supplies, and funding to help the school provide the best possible education for its students.

Although business involvement faded somewhat in the 1960s and 1970s, a resurgence in business involvement began in the late seventies and early eighties. School-business partnerships have been steadily on the rise from around 40,000 in 1983 to over 200,000 by the mid-1990's. When schools and businesses become involved in partnerships certain conditions must be present for the partnerships to succeed. Those conditions include awareness, clear and measurable goals and objectives by both partners, the necessity of identifying potential resources and talent, reciprocal benefits for participants, and the ability to carry out formal evaluation of the program. The purpose of this study was to attempt to save a school-business partnership that had the potential to make a significant contribution to both a middle school and a large employer in Southside Virginia. By identifying the variables involved in both the erosion and revitalization of a school-business partnership, the information could prove valuable to others who may be struggling to maintain or renew partnerships in their schools or businesses. This study was conducted in two phases. The first phase involved the identification of the variables which contributed to the disintegration of a school-business partnership. The second phase involved using a 12-step partnership development process created by the National Association for Partners in Education to revitalize the partnership. A series of interviews, surveys, and questionnaires, as well as a search of current school data were used to determine the variables present in both phases.
