Book Introduction to Structural and Systematic Botany and Vegetable Physiology

Download or read book Introduction to Structural and Systematic Botany and Vegetable Physiology written by Asa Gray and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Structural and Systematic Botany, and Vegetable Physiology: Being a Fifth and Revised Edition of the Botanical Text-Book, Illustrated With Over Thirteen Hundred Woodcuts This compendious treatise is designed to furnish classes in the higher seminaries of learning, colleges, and medical schools, as well as private students generally, with a suitable text-book of Structural and Physiological Botany, and a convenient introduction to Systematic or Descriptive Botany, adapted to the present condition of the science. The favor with which the former editions have been received, while it has satisfied the author that the plan of the work is well adapted to the end in view, has made him the more desirous to improve its execution, and to render it a better exponent of the present state of Botany. In this view, the structural and physiological part of the work, and the chapters on the Principles of Classification and of the Natural System, have been again almost entirely rewritten, and such changes made as the advanced state of our knowledge required, or the author's continued experience in teaching has suggested. This has been done without increasing the extent of this part of the volume, which, considering the limited time devoted to the study in our colleges, &c., is found to be as full as is desirable for a textbook. Book First Lessons in Botany and Vegetable Physiology

Download or read book First Lessons in Botany and Vegetable Physiology written by Asa Gray and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-11 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Lessons in Botany and Vegetable Physiology: Illustrated by Over 360 Wood Engravings, From Original Drawings This book is intended for the use of beginners, and for classes in the common and higher schools, - in which the elements of Botany, one of the most generally interesting of the Natural Sciences, surely ought to be taught, and to be taught correctly, as far as the instruction proceeds. While these Lessons are made as plain and simple as they well can be, all the subjects treated of have been carried far enough to make the book a genuine Grammar of Botany and Vegetable Physiology, and a sufficient introduction to those works in which the plants of a country - especially of our own - are described. Accordingly, as respects the principles of Botany (including Vegetable Physiology), this work is complete in itself, as a school-book for younger classes, and even for the students of our higher seminaries. For it comprises a pretty full account of the structure, organs, growth, and reproduction of plants, and of their important uses in the scheme of creation, - subjects which certainly ought to be as generally understood by all educated people as the elements of Natural Philosophy or Astronomy are; and which are quite as easy to be learned. The book is also intended to serve as an introduction to the author's Manual of the Botany of the Northern United States (or to any similar work describing the plants of other districts), and to be to it what a grammar and a dictionary are to a classical author. It consequently contains many terms and details which there is no necessity for young students perfectly to understand in the first instance, and still less to commit to memory, but which they will need to refer to as occasions arise, when they come to analyze flowers, and ascertain the names of our wild plants. To make the book complete in this respect, a full Glossary, or Dictionary of Terms used in describing Plants, is added to the volume. This contains very many words which are not used in the Manual of Botany; but as they occur in common botanical works, it was thought best to introduce and explain them. All the words in the Glossary which seemed to require it arc accented. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Structural and Systematic Botany, and Vegetable Physiology: Being a Fifth and Revised Edition of the Botanical Text-Book, Illustrated With Over Thirteen Hundred Woodcuts I. Botany is the Natural History of the Vegetable Kingdom. The vegetable kingdom consists of those beings (called plants) which derive their sustenance from the mineral kingdom, that is from the earth and air, and create the food upon which animals live. The proof of this proposition will be hereafter afforded, in the chapter upon the food and nutrition of plants. The vegetable kingdom, therefore, occupies a position between the mineral and the animal kingdoms. Comprehensively considered, Botany ac cordingly embraces every scientific inquiry that can be made respecting plants, their nature, their kinds, the laws which gov ern them, and the part they play in the general economy of the world, - their relations both to the lifeless mineral kingdom below them, from which they draw their sustenance, and to the animal kingdom above, endowed with higher Vitality, to which in turn they render what they have thus derived.
