Book Leadership and School Boards

Download or read book Leadership and School Boards written by Laura E. Reimer and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-10-02 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: School boards shape society through systems of education. They choose who leads the system and how educators are selected to lead classrooms. They approve the allocation of millions of dollars every year. As leaders, the school board determines how their community defines the values, resources, and belief systems that together form the democratic mosaic of our times. Embedded within this knowledge are timeless foundations that have carried us from the origins of school boards to our current systems; these are the keys to community engagement, and these are the keys to empowered and strong school systems. This book is about the remarkable and unique purpose of school boards. It is not a book about abolition, or drastic reform. It explains clearly that school boards were established as part of the foundation for a strong democratic society and encourages everyone involved with school systems to guard that foundation. School boards embody the most immediate principles of democracy. This is an exciting book, appropriate for our times, focused on the powerful leadership necessary in the school board, and the potential to deliver ever-improving results through consistent and deliberate governance.

Book The Politics of Leadership

Download or read book The Politics of Leadership written by George J. Petersen and published by IAP. This book was released on 2006-07-01 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary contribution of this book, is not its advocacy of a specific position but rather, its objective analysis of cogent topics. The content prompts us to consider governance in relation to quality education and to ponder alternative policy strategies that have yet to be fully evaluated. As a young doctoral student more than a few years ago, William Van Til, an eminent scholar and a mentor, reminded me almost daily that members of the education profession had a moral responsibility to address the most difficult questions about education and democracy. These enduring queries, he argued, extended to determining how this critical social service should be organized and controlled and to determining the appropriate roles for administrators and teachers. Those in our profession who fail to heed his advice by remaining indifferent to these philosophical dilemmas should consider Plato’s long-standing warning: “One of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors."

Book Violence in the Schools

Download or read book Violence in the Schools written by National School Boards Association and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication, resulting from a survey of more than 2,000 school districts, focuses on school violence and ways to prevent it. Section 1 discusses both the problem of school violence and also the critical role that school boards must play in keeping schools safe. This section also includes information about how school boards can develop policies to combat school violence and information on how boards can obtain sample policies to use as models. Section 2 includes brief descriptions of the more than 700 violence prevention programs used by school districts. These prevention tips are organized into 30 categories (e.g., closed campus for lunch, dress code, gun-free school zones, metal detectors, staff development). Each tip includes: (1) a 15-40 word description of the specific program or activity, based on information provided by the school district; (2) whether the school district is located in an urban, suburban, or rural area; and (3) a contact person and telephone number, if one was provided. Section 3 includes basic information on the school districts that participated in the survey. Districts are listed alphabetically by state. Information in this section, all provided by the school districts, includes the school district name, mailing address, and other pertinent information such as district size and type. The third section also serves as an index to section 2, listing the page numbers on which violence prevention measures from that district appear. (GLR)

Download or read book Besieged written by William G. Howell and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2005-04-01 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: School boards are fighting for their survival. Almost everything that they do is subject to regulations handed down from city councils, state boards of education, legislatures, and courts. As recent mayoral and state takeovers in such cities as Baltimore, Chicago, and New York make abundantly clear, school boards that do not fulfill the expectations of other political players may be stripped of what few independent powers they still retain. Teachers unions exert growing influence over board decision-making processes. And with the passage of the No Child Left Behind Act, the federal government has aggressively inserted itself into matters of local education governance. B esieged is the first full-length volume in many years to systematically examine the politics that surround school boards. A group of highly renowned scholars, relying on both careful case studies and quantitative analyses, examine how school boards fare when they interact with their political superiors, teachers unions, and the public. For the most part, the picture that emerges is sobering: while school boards perform certain administrative functions quite well, the political pressures they face undermine their capacity to institute the wide-ranging school reforms that many voters and local leaders are currently demanding.

Book The American Superintendent 2020 Decennial Study

This book was released on 2021-04-19 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2020 AASA Decennial Study of the Superintendent is an extension of national decennial studies of the American school superintendent that began in 1923. The research was conducted in late 2019 and early 2020. The results are presented in various ways throughout the study, ranging from aggregate findings to two and three level crosstabs that disaggregate data by eight different enrollment categories. Just as findings from previous decennial studies suggested, the various job-related happenings of superintendents are not always homogeneous. They can be influenced by a multitude of factors such as district enrollment, demographic characteristics of the superintendents, and characteristics of the students and communities they serve.
