This study was guided by five main objectives: To determine the effect of School Based Learning Programme on teacher’s effectiveness on planning for instruction, on lesson content delivery, teacher’s evaluation skills, on development of Student-Teacher relationship and finally to examine the effect on their use of teaching- learning resources on their teaching. The study employed descriptive survey design. 356 teachers, 36 head teachers, one Quality Assurance and Standards Officer which formed a target population of 393 respondents.

It also used four research questions to answer the objectives. The first research question sought to get information on impact of lunch programme. The second one established enrolment rates while the third research question established retention rates and the fourth one helped to gather data on completion rate and the last one on the role of education stake holders on enrolment retention, completion of pupils in Primary Schools. The data analysis was done by use of statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) programme. The results were generated and presented in form of percentages, frequencies and means.

Book excerpt: Research evidence points out that there is a strong relationship between teaching and learning. The KESSP 2005-2010 document and the Sessional Paper No. 1 of 2005 have cited low quality teacher education as a problem in Kenya. They attribute this to the traditional content-based pedagogical primary teacher education model which presents a fragmented view of learning and is not context-based leading to little or no connection between theory and practice. This study sought to establish whether context-based learning through focus discussion groups on teaching and classroom practice improves pre-service teachers' teaching effectiveness.The study revealed significant differences between the group trained through the traditional content primary teacher education model and those trained through the context-based model. Based on these findings, a context-based pre-service primary teacher education model was formulated for primary teacher education in Kenya and recommendations made to primary teacher education policy makers, curriculum developers, tutors and pre-service teachers to design and implement context-based learning approaches in training primary school teachers in Kenya.

The specific objectives were: to assess the effectiveness of community service programme in rehabilitating offenders; to highlight the communities attitudes and perceptions towards community service; to investigate the kind of crimes /offences committed by people who are sentenced by courts to do community service; to evaluate the general and salient challenges facing the correctional agenda of community service programme; to identify the constraints faced by offenders in the work placement agencies. The data for this study was collected from primary and secondary sources. The study comprised of a random sample of 220 respondents composed of male serving offenders’, women serving offenders, men who completed serving and women who completed serving. The focus group discussion participants included 8 community members, 8 victims and 4 local chiefs. A cross- sectional survey based on sample of eleven major estates was applied (Huruma, town Centre, Maili Nne, Mwanzo, Kamukunji, West Indies, Kipkaren, Pioneer, Langas, Chepkoilel and Air strip) within Eldoret Municipality. The data from completed questionnaires were cleaned, coded and entered into the computer and analyzed using the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS). The study findings indicates that the community service is an effective way of creating a favourable environment for the victims and offenders to reconcile. The study also confirmed that the community service programme was an alternative measure to imprisonment and accelerates reconciliation between offenders with their victims as well as with their communities. This facilitates their reintegration into the community. Additionally, the finding established the need for community service programme as a non-custodial measure that should further be strengthened and supported by the government and stake holders. The implementation of such programme should be seen as responsibility of every Kenyan and endeavours should be made for its success as a new intervention to replace physical imprisonment. Since the area under study is representative, of the community service order implementation in Kenya; the finding have a potentiality for national application. The study adds knowledge to the area of community service order as a penal reform measure.

Some of the problems are violence towards people; child abuse; drug abuse at increasingly early ages; integration problems due to immigration; dropping out of school; and typical problems related to student development, personality, disabilities, social and psychical maladjustment, teenagers socioaffective relationships, etc. Research on school success and failure has a long history, but there is still no agreement concerning the prevalence of these variables to explain academic achievement, the relationship between those variables, and which other variables modulate their level of impact. For many years, cognitive psychology has emphasized cognitive function as the most relevant for learning in school. However, recent studies highlight the importance of motivational and affective functions in building consistent models to explain learning and academic achievement. This change of perspective, from the classical cognitive model to a self-regulated learning model, has implied a new orientation in the research of the factors involved in school success and failure. Self-regulated learning models try to integrate students cognitive, socioaffective, and behavioral aspects. These models describe the different components involved in successful learning at all school stages, explaining reciprocal relationships between those components and directly relating learning to personal achievement, motivation, volition, and emotions. With this new paradigm, students not only contribute to strengthening their intelligence, but also their motivational and emotional qualities, all related to achieving personal balance. This book presents studies, ideas, and recommendations to shed light on the complex educational world. Education has limits and difficulties, but it is also the only instrument that can develop students potential into personal success.

Book excerpt: "The Farmer Field School (FFS) originated in the 1980s in the context of integrated pest management in Indonesian rice farming. With the hope that it is the remedy for agricultural extension system, FFS has been promoted as a tool for participatory learning and experimentation all over the world. This work results from a critical analysis of the introduction of the FFS concept into the agricultural innovation system in Uganda. Ideally, an FFS produces new technical knowledge in the context of application through the input of local human resources. The analysis, framed as a technography, shows that implementation and operation of an FFS is hugely complex. This detailed study of institutional factors, from the level of international donor organizations down to the level of local leadership and gender relations, and analysis of technical factors in different rural areas of Uganda makes clear that and FFS is more than a local tool for farmer participation in agricultural improvement. Implementation of a FFS requires adjustment of the agricultural innovation system at all levels and an integrated tackling of agricultural problems in order to meet its objectives. Isubikalu shows that it is imperative to 'demolish' existing organizational structures and create new ones, which align scientific with local structures to produce an appropriate people-centered system that is more responsive to agricultural and rural development. She provides stepping stones in redesigning FFS to fit the specific conditions in Uganda."
