Inner City Kids explores how a group of African American, Jamaican, Puerto Rican, and Haitian adolescents make meaning of and respond to living in an inner-city community. The book focuses on areas of particular concern to the youth, such as violence, educational opportunities, and a decaying and demoralizing urban environment characterized by trash, pollution, and abandoned houses. McIntyre's work with these teens draws upon participatory action research, which seeks to codevelop programs with study participants rather than for them.

Community Organizing for Urban School Reform tells the story of a radically different approach to educational change. Using a case study approach, Dennis Shirley describes how working-class parents, public school teachers, clergy, social workers, business partners, and a host of other engaged citizens have worked to improve education in inner-city schools. Their combined efforts are linked through the community organizations of the Industrial Areas Foundation, which have developed a network of over seventy "Alliance Schools" in poor and working-class neighborhoods throughout Texas. This deeply democratic struggle for school reform contains important lessons for all of the nation's urban areas. It provides a striking point of contrast to orthodox models of change and places the political empowerment of low-income parents at the heart of genuine school improvement and civic renewal.

More recently, the closing of inner city schools has greatly increased across the United States; Reduction in public school enrollment from 2006-2013: Detroit -63%, Cleveland -32%, Indianapolis -27%, D.C.-23%, L.A.-23%, etc. (Journey For Justice Alliance,2014). Due to budget cuts, threat of school closings from poor facility conditions, large class size, and pressure to raise test scores, inner city schools struggle to keep teachers (Journey For Justice Alliance,2014). Poor teacher retention along with a lack in care for educational facilities has created a toxic environment for inner-city students. Although there are many reasons that inner-city schools suffer, negativity within school culture seems to be a common denominator within many of these problems. With larger population percentages of minority, economically disadvantaged and disabled students, difficulties arise in communicating student-to-student and teacher-to-student (Bellwether Education Partner, 2016). The question becomes, how does one design a space to provide comfort, safety and communication in order to foster healthy relationships? This research will inform the design of a middle school that focuses on community and communication. The goal will be to design a school where flexibility and team work is made easier through furniture and layout solutions in order to foster growth and respect for students and teachers.

When primary needs of children are not met due to root causes of poverty, children experience difficulty in school. This is most notable in inner city communities where poverty rates are highest. In the face of poverty, inner city schools appear unsuccessful with efforts to make the processes of schooling work as well for poor children as for those who are not poor. This study of poverty and inner city education asks what can an inner city school do to counter the negative effects of poverty on learning? Given that poverty is systemic, to what extent can education be an instrument for social and economic change? The first part of this study is a conceptual analysis of inner city education. political economy provides the theoretical framework for understanding the structural role of schools in sustaining unequal social and economic conditions. Stemming from this analysis, critical theory is applied to the notion that community economic development might occur atthe local school is considered. Community-based schooling is conceived as alternate educational practice to counter poverty effects through structural change at the local school and neighbourhood levels. Identified within this analysis is the role for critical educational leadership to meet the challenge of finding ways to make a difference in the lives of children. Through formal research and practical inquiry, evidence of this difference could then be shared so others might be more encouraged to join in transforming practice in inner city communities. The latter part of this study is an account of how this critical perspective was applied to practice efforts at William Whyte Community School located in Winnipeg's inner city. In this section, community-based schooling is described as alternative educational practice that recognize and supports both individual and capacities in order to create and sustain opportunities for individual growth and community developme.

In Schools Betrayed, her innovative history of race and urban education, Kathryn M. Neckerman tells the story of how and why these schools came to serve black children so much worse than their white counterparts. Focusing on Chicago public schools between 1900 and 1960, Neckerman compares the circumstances of blacks and white immigrants, groups that had similarly little wealth and status yet came to gain vastly different benefits from their education. Their divergent educational outcomes, she contends, stemmed from Chicago officials’ decision to deal with rising African American migration by segregating schools and denying black students equal resources. And it deepened, she shows, because of techniques for managing academic failure that only reinforced inequality. Ultimately, these tactics eroded the legitimacy of the schools in Chicago’s black community, leaving educators unable to help their most disadvantaged students. Schools Betrayed will be required reading for anyone who cares about urban education.
