Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Course in Algebra The present revision of the Complete School Algebra bears substantially the same relation to the revised First Course and Second Course that the first edition bore to the original texts. In the revision of each of these texts material for which there is no strong demand from teachers has been omitted, and the entire work has been rewritten in the interest of greater simplicity and directness of appeal. The collections of exercises and problems are for the most part new and contain a larger proportion of easy exercises with simple results than the first edition. A striking feature of the revision is the inclusion of a large number of oral exercises in connection with the introduction of each new idea or Operation. It is the object of these exer cises to present the new concept in complete isolation from any complication of notation or technique so that the student becomes familiar with its content and bearing before he is asked to make use of it in written work. These oral exercises may well be taken up when the advance lesson is assigned, so that the pupil may be certain that he understands the idea involved in the new work before he leaves his instructor. Another feature scarcely less important is the character and position of the examples and hints. The aim has been to help the student at the exact point where he needs it and to avoid the insertion of lengthy and difficult solutions before they can be completely understood. The definitions and axioms have been expressed in the simplest language which is consistent with scientific accuracy. Many definitions which are usually found in elementary texts but which do not contribute to the clearness of the subject are omitted. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School Algebra This Algebra is the second volume of a series of two books. It contains material for a half-year course and presupposes a year's work such as is provided in the authors' First Course, or any similar text. Since, in many schools, a year or more intervenes between the first and second courses in algebra, it has been deemed advisable to include a review of the First Course before proceeding to new subjects. This part of the book is, however, more than a mere hasty resume. While the student is reviewing the topics of the first year, he is at the same time making a distinct advance by seeing the subject from new view-points, which his added maturity and training enable him to appreciate. The selection of new topics in this Second Course is in accord with current practice in the best high schools. While the book contains material for thorough preparation for college, the authors have not had in mind solely the students making such preparation, but rather the great body of students who will go no further in our educational system than the high school. The chapter devoted to the notion of a function is introduced in 0 the belief that the high school student should become somewhat familiar with the idea Of the correspondence between two re lated variables. Along with the notion of a function, the graph is presented with a View to leading the students to picture and to visualize this correspondence. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Course in Algebra: Teachers' Edition The busy teacher of high-school. Algebra often finds that limitations of time forbid the actual working out of all the exercises and problems in a text. This teachers' edition is designed to meet such a condition. In its plan it is brief and schematic rather than complete and detailed. Less time should be required to prepare a lesson from this outline than from a text giving the solutions in full. For those exercises involving not more than one process in their solution the answers only are given. If two or more pro cesses are required in a solution, an outline is given which covers each step of the work. Moreover, after each indicated step of the work, the result obtained by taking that step is set down. This scheme affords an easy method of tracing a solution. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Course in Algebra This text is as brief as the algebra of years ago, and yet contains all that is good in modern mathematical thought. Attention is called to the introduction of graphical methods through simple horizontal and vertical measurements (exer cise 4, Exercise 41, problems 28 This procedure makes the transition to Cartesian coordinates a natural one. Teach ers will find that the color scheme recommended in graphs will greatly aid the student in connecting related data. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A School Algebra The guiding rule in the preparation of the present work has been to present the pupil with but one new idea at a time, and, by examples and exercises, to insure its assimilation be fore passing to another. This system is carried out by a minute subdivision of all the algebraic processes, and the end kept in view is that in no case where it can be avoided shall the pupil have to go through a process of which he has not previously learned all the separate steps. As a part of the same plan, definitions are so far as practicable brought in only as they are wanted, the first exercises in indicated opera tions are performed with numbers, and the pupil is set to work on exercises from the start. Correlative with. The system of subdivision is that of ex tending the scope of the exercises so as to include not only the elementary operations of algebra, but their combinations and applications. It is hoped that the wider range of thought and expression in which the pupil is thus practised will be found to tell in his subsequent studies. As another part of the same general plan the subject has been divided into three separate courses. The First Course, which extends to Simple Equations, is intended to drill the student in all the fundamental processes by exercises which are, for the most part, of the simplest character. The varied exercises in algebraic expression which are scattered through this course form a feature to which the attention of instructors is especially solicited. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High School Algebra Complete The Second Course in Algebra, beginning page 241, is designed for use in the second or third year of the high school course. In common practice the mathematics courses in high schools require a year of geometry following the first year algebra, but this course does not assume a knowledge of geometry; it may follow in a continuous study of the sub jcet through a year and a half or two years, as required in some schools. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Algebra: Second Course Tms volume has been prepared as a companion to the first course in elementary algebra, written by the same authors. As its title suggests, the second course is designed for students who have had the equivalent of the work given in the first course. The first course gives one year's work, including the topics now generally taught in the first year of the average high school. The second course reviews the topics treated in the first course, amplifies the treatment in the latter by the addition of new matter where necessary, and extends the course to include all topics required for admission to college. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High School Algebra: Elementary Course Each of these aims leads to the same order of topics, which, however, differs somewhat from the conventional order. If it is admitted that there should be a gradually increasing complexity of forms to be manipulated, it follows that factoring and complicated work in fractions have no proper place in the first half year. This book is arranged so that factoring may begin with the second semester and complicated fractions may come still later. Simple fractions are treated in Chapter V. The pupil is introduced to the algebraic notation by recalling and stating in terms of letters certain rules of arithmetic with which he is already familiar. The simplicity of the algebraic formulas, compared with the arithmetical statement of rules known to the pupil, cannot fail to impress him with the use fulness and power of the subject which he is about to study. This impression will be deepened when, in Chapter VI, rules which caused considerable trouble in arithmetic are derived with the utmost ease by algebraic processes. The study of equations and their uses is naturally the main topic of the Elementary Course. This topic is therefore devel oped early, simple simultaneous equations being completed in Part One, which is intended to be covered in the first half year. Book Modern First Year Algebra Classic Reprint

Download or read book Modern First Year Algebra Classic Reprint written by Webster Wells and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-14 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern First Year Algebra The most notable undertaking in the field of instruction in mathe maties in the past decade has been the work of the National Committee on Mathematical Requirements, culminating in its summary report, recently issued, and in its final report which will appear in a short time. One immediate result of this undertaking has been a revision of the definitions of the units in high school mathematics by the College En trance Requirements Board. The extent to which the Wells and Hart First Year Algebra, written eleven years ago, harmonizes with these recent reports is most gratifying. This M odem First Year Algebra incorporates, first of all, the changes suggested by the eleven added years of experience of its author in teach ing the subject to boys and girls of high school grade; and secondly, other changes which are suggested by these recent reports. It is a new book. While, naturally, it is based upon the Wells and Hart First Year Algebra, the text has been rewritten wherever any improvement could be made in the instruction or expression. The explanations in the text are often more complete than those of the First Year Algebra, and those represented a high-water mark eleven years ago. This is done to help teachers not to endeavor to super sede them. The examples are all new, and so, too, are almost all the problems. Enough examples and problems are given in the text so that teachers will not need to seek drill material from other sources. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Algebra: First Year Course The sign of multiplication (x) is often replaced in algebra by a dot (e), which is written above the line to distinguish it from a decimal point. Thus3 4means3 4. The product of two numbers, one or both of which are' represented by letters, is usually indicated by writing the numbers one after the other without any Sign between them. Thus ab means a x b or a b, 4 c means 4 x e or 4 C. When only one of two numbers is represented by a letter, it is custom ary to write the letter last. Thus we write 4 c, but not 0 4.
