Book excerpt: This book is intended to demystify what can be the daunting prospect of a School Admission Appeal. The book provides a clear explanation of how the process works, from the different sorts of School Admission Appeals, to what to expect at the Appeal hearing and how the Appeal Panel makes their decision on each Appeal. The book will give an understanding of the Appeals process to allow parents to make an informed decision on whether they wish to Appeal. For those who have decided to Appeal, the book explains the different elements of Appeal and how to prepare for them such as what the School's Case may say and how to prepare their own Case for their Appeal. It gives pointers on how to decide what evidence to submit in support of an Appeal as well as suggestions on how to build the Case to present on the day. Example questions to ask the Admission Authority as well as example questions that the Panel might ask a Parent are also included.

Book School Admissions and Accountability

Download or read book School Admissions and Accountability written by Feintuck, Mike and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2013-01-16 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The processes for allocating places at secondary schools in England are perennially controversial. Providing integrated coverage of the policy, practice and outcomes from 1944 to 2012, this book addresses the issues relevant to school admissions arising from three different approaches adopted in this period: planning via local authorities, quasi-market mechanisms, and random allocation. Each approach is assessed on its own terms, but constitutional and legal analysis is also utilised to reflect on the extent to which each meets expectations and values associated with schooling, especially democratic expectations associated with citizenship. Repeated failure to identify and pursue specific values for schooling, and hence admissions, can be found to underlie questions regarding the ‘fairness’ of the process, while also limiting the potential utility of judicial responses to legal actions relating to school admissions. The book adopts an interdisciplinary approach which makes it relevant and accessible to a wide readership in education, social policy and socio-legal studies.
