Book The Early Letters of Bishop Richard Hurd 1739 1762

Download or read book The Early Letters of Bishop Richard Hurd 1739 1762 written by Richard Hurd and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 1995 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A model edition of the early correspondence of one of George III's favourite bishops. ARCHIVES Richard Hurd is best known to ecclesiastical historians as one of George III's favourite bishops who was offered, and declined, the archbishopric of Canterbury. These letters, therefore, illuminate the early career of one of the most prominent clerics of the late eighteenth century. The letters begin in 1739, just after Hurd had graduated B.A. at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. They chart his gradual climb up the ladder of ecclesiastical preferment, through his time as Fellow at Emmanuel and end with him settled in the comfortable country rectory of Thurcaston in Leicestershire. Hurd had a wide circle of correspondents. He became a close friend of William Warburton, Bishop of Gloucester, perhaps the most prominent controverialist of the period. He was also a member of a literary circle which included the poets Thomas Gray and William Mason. Indeed, Hurd himself is well-known to students of English literatureas the author of Letters on Chivalry and Romanceand as a significant figure among the so-called `pre-romantics'. Hurd's letters reveal the full range of his interests, from theology and university politics, through literature, to painting and sculpture. This edition, therefore, not only tells us about Hurd's early life and career, but also provides a valuable insight into the social life of the Anglican clergy in the eighteenth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here friends of Anthony W. Johnson honour him as a re-embodiment of the polymathic artist-scholar figure once observable in Ben Jonson, on whom he has done some of his most distinctive work. Part I of the book reflects his strong grounding in English literature and culture of the seventeenth century, with essays, not only on Ben Jonson, but also on university drama, on grammar school drama, and on humanist literary taste. Part II responds to his pioneering flights of culture-imagological time-travel to other periods, with essays on riddles through the ages, on Matthew Arnold’s doubts about Homeric pictorialism, and on anciently comic elements in George Gissing’s urban fiction. Part III celebrates his importance, both as scholar and artist, for the present day, with essays extending imagological analysis to the singer Nick Drake, to the avant-garde Danish poet Morten Søkilde, and to Sean S. Baker’s film Tangerine, plus a climactic celebration of Johnson’s own performances on solo violin and guitar as augmented by self-recording.

Book The World of Christopher Marlowe

Download or read book The World of Christopher Marlowe written by David Riggs and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2014-01-07 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive biography: a masterly account of Marlowe's work and life and the world in which he lived Shakespeare's contemporary, Christopher Marlowe revolutionized English drama and poetry, transforming the Elizabethan stage into a place of astonishing creativity. The outline of Marlowe's life, work, and violent death are known, but few of the details that explain why his writing and ideas made him such a provocateur in the Elizabethan era have been available until now. In this absorbing consideration of Marlowe and his times, David Riggs presents Marlowe as the language's first poetic dramatist whose desires proved his undoing. In an age of tremendous cultural change in Europe when Cervantes wrote the first novel and Copernicus demonstrated a world subservient to other nonreligious forces, Catholics and Protestants battled for control of England and Elizabeth's crown was anything but secure. Into this whirlwind of change stepped Marlowe espousing sexual freedom and atheism. His beliefs proved too dangerous to those in power and he was condemned as a spy and later murdered. In The World of Christopher Marlowe, Riggs's exhaustive research digs deeply into the mystery of how and why Marlowe was killed.

Book Schola Reg a Cantuar ens s

Download or read book Schola Reg a Cantuar ens s written by C. E. Woodruff and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Schola Regia Cantuariensis: A History of Canterbury School, Commonly Called the King's School City of Canterbury has been very generally recognized, and many books have been written illustrative of the eccle siastical and civil history of the mother city of England. Very little, however, has yet appeared dealing exclusively with one of its most ancient and interesting institutions, the School, known in mediaeval times as the School of the Arch bishop and of the City, and, since its reconstitution by King Henry VIII., as the King's School of Canterbury. Of this School - the premier in England (as we believe) in point of antiquity - the only book which has hitherto been published is a little monograph from the pen of the late Rev. J. S. Sidebotham, entitled M emor'ials of the King's School. Mr. Side botham's work contains many excellent biographical notices of the School's more famous scholars, but makes no attempt to trace the varying fortunes of the School itself during the many centuries of its existence. Moreover, forty-three years have now elapsed since the Memorials were published, and in the interval not only have fresh sources of information been opened to the School historian, but the growth and development which the School has undergone during the last generation have given encouragement to further efforts to deal more adequately with its records. Book English Revenge Drama

Download or read book English Revenge Drama written by Linda Woodbridge and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-09-16 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vengeance permeates English Renaissance drama - for example, it crops up in all but two of Shakespeare's plays. This book explores why a supposedly forgiving Christian culture should have relished such bloodthirsty, vengeful plays. A clue lies in the plays' passion for fairness, a preoccupation suggesting widespread resentment of systemic unfairness - legal, economic, political and social. Revengers' precise equivalents - the father of two beheaded sons obliges his enemy to eat her two sons' heads - are vigilante versions of Elizabethan law, where penalties suit the crimes: thieves' hands were cut off, scolds' tongues bridled. The revengers' language of 'paying' hints at the operation of revenge in the service of economic redress. Revenge makes contact with resistance theory, justifying overthrow of tyrants, and some revengers challenge the fundamental inequity of social class. Woodbridge demonstrates how, for all their sensationalism, their macabre comedy and outlandish gore, Renaissance revenge plays do some serious cultural work.
