Book Schlepper

Download or read book Schlepper written by Clara R. Maslow and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-10 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This man believed that every human being has the duty to love and assist every other human because that is all we have." -Jonathan Maslow, The Torrid Zone Jonathan Maslow (1948-2008) was blessed with a naturalist's eye, an adventurer's longing to travel, and a poet's soul-tender as the night. A prolific journalist and author, Maslow's writing was steeped in and shaped by his love of nature, the ocean in particular. Hailed by friends and colleagues alike for his ferocious intellect and extraordinary talent, Maslow's untimely death at age fifty-nine robbed the world of a truly special voice. To celebrate and commemorate his life and his work, Jonathan's mother, Clara K. Maslow, compiled and edited Schlepper, a collection of columns Jonathan originally wrote for the Herald News of Passaic, New Jersey. The columns reflect Maslow's interest in politics, social justice, and humanism. Moreover, they reveal his deep passion for sharing the often-ignored stories of regular people. "I like to go to beautiful, unknown places with big problems and listen to the people tell their stories in their own voice," said Maslow. With Schlepper, you can now join Maslow on his journeys around the world and discover, through his writing, the humanity we all share.

Download or read book The Finkler Question written by Howard Jacobson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2010-09-10 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "He should have seen it coming. His life had been one mishap after another. So he should have been prepared for this one..." Julian Treslove, a professionally unspectacular and disappointed BBC worker, and Sam Finkler, a popular Jewish philosopher, writer and television personality, are old school friends. Despite a prickly relationship and very different lives, they've never quite lost touch with each other - or with their former teacher, Libor Sevick, a Czechoslovakian always more concerned with the wider world than with exam results. Now, both Libor and Finkler are recently widowed, and with Treslove, his chequered and unsuccessful record with women rendering him an honorary third widower, they dine at Libor's grand, central London apartment. It's a sweetly painful evening of reminiscence in which all three remove themselves to a time before they had loved and lost; a time before they had fathered children, before the devastation of separations, before they had prized anything greatly enough to fear the loss of it. Better, perhaps, to go through life without knowing happiness at all because that way you had less to mourn? Treslove finds he has tears enough for the unbearable sadness of both his friends' losses. And it's that very evening, at exactly 11:30pm, as Treslove hesitates a moment outside the window of the oldest violin dealer in the country as he walks home, that he is attacked. After this, his whole sense of who and what he is will slowly and ineluctably change. The Finkler Question is a scorching story of exclusion and belonging, justice and love, ageing, wisdom and humanity. Funny, furious, unflinching, this extraordinary novel shows one of our finest writers at his brilliant best.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this publication is to present the up-to-date views of the many eminent immunologists who contributed to the scientific program of the 5th European Immunology Meeting held in Istanbul in June 1982. Recent Advances in Immunology is intended for immunol ogists both in the basic sciences and in clinical medicine. It provides under one cover an assemblage of information about funda mental problems in immunology and clinical applications. The book opens with Prof. E. A. Kabat's review of the problems in understanding the structural basis of antibody complementarity. The succeeding four papers deal with the role of macrophages in the various stages of immune phenomena. The first of the two articles on T cells reports a product necessary for suppressor activity and the second describes an analysis of precursors of cytotoxic T lym phocytes. The articles dealing with immunogenetics start with the description of new loci in HLA by Prof. J. J. van Rood and co-workers followed by a paper describing the molecular cloning of H-2 class I genes. Prof. P. J. Lachmann begins the discussion on the genetics of the complement system. There are three stimulating articles on the chemistry and genetics of the complement components and their asso ciations with disease. After a review of artificial antigens and synthetic vaccines, papers on immunomodulation describe strategies for improving immunogenicity, immunomodulation in tumor systems and by xenobiotics.

  • Pages : 429 pages

Download or read book Nights Out written by Judith Walkowitz and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2012-05-15 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: London's Soho district underwent a spectacular transformation between the late Victorian era and the end of the Second World War: its old buildings and dark streets infamous for sex, crime, political disloyalty, and ethnic diversity became a center of culinary and cultural tourism servicing patrons of nearby shops and theaters. Indulgences for the privileged and the upwardly mobile edged a dangerous, transgressive space imagined to be "outside" the nation. Treating Soho as exceptional, but also representative of London's urban transformation, Judith Walkowitz shows how the area's foreignness and porousness were key to the explosion of culture and development of modernity in the first half of the twentieth century. She draws on a vast and unusual range of sources to stitch together a rich patchwork quilt of vivid stories and unforgettable characters, revealing how Soho became a showcase for a new cosmopolitan identity.

Book Reciprocal Constructions

Download or read book Reciprocal Constructions written by Vladimir Petrovich Nedi?a?lkov and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph constitutes the first comprehensive investigation of reciprocal constructions and related phenomena in the world's languages. Reciprocal constructions (of the type The two boys hit each other, The poets admire each other's poems) have often been the subject of language-particular studies, but it is only in this work that a truly global comparative picture emerges. Nine stage-setting chapters dealing with general and theoretical matters are followed by 40 chapters containing in-depth descriptions of reciprocals in individual languages by renowned specialists. The introductory papers provide a conceptual and terminological framework that allows the authors of the individual chapters to characterize their languages in comparable terms, making it easy for the reader to see points of commonality between languages and constructions that have never been compared before. This set of volumes is an indispensable starting point and will be a lasting reference work for any future studies of reciprocals.
