Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poems of Schiller: Complete If a translator from the German Classics be so fortu nate as to attract but a single reader by his labors, Who will follow him with ever growing interest, Who will learn to appreciate an Author interpreted by him, so as to induce such a study of the language as will furnish a free perusal of S'chi-ller as Schiller wrote it; then is the translator well repaid for his arduous, and somewhat un thankful task; then 18 his mission, in a great measure), ful filled. A metaphrase, if at all poetical, has generally been preferred to a paraphrase. So we consider Schiller a model approaching too near perfection, to be improved by any translator, however great as an Author. Although we admire grace and brilliancy of diction not less than the most fastidious, yet, when it becomes absolutely nec essa'ry to make a sacrifice, either of the poetry or the sense, in a poetical translation, we would far rather see the senti ment correctly rendered, though not b1eath1n0' the high est poetry, than something the Author never said or meant, most exquisitely expressed - ea fhomely truth being prefer able to a gilded falsehood. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Schiller His Poetry This is to some extent recognised by writers of histories and text-books of literature, and by editors of selections from the works of our poets; for place is always given by them to a certain amount of biographical material. But in the histories and text-books the biography of a given writer stands by itself, and his work has to be sought elsewhere, the student being left to make the connexion for himself while even in our current editions of selections there is little systematic attempt to link biography, step by step, with production. Book Schiller s Poems

Download or read book Schiller s Poems written by Friedrich Schiller and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Schiller's Poems: Edited With Introduction and Notes All that a poet can give us is his individuality. This must therefore be worthy of exhibition to the world and to posterity. To dignify this personality as much as possible, to refine it until it attains the purest and noblest humanity, this must be his first and para mount concern, before he may venture to appeal to the sympathy of worthy men. Schiller himself bears triumphantly this severe test, which he applied with excessive rigor to an older contemporary in his review of Bilrger's lyric poetry. The main purpose of the present volume is to present Schiller's personality as expressed in his poems; a personality that compelled the homage and won the affection of such men as Humboldt and Goethe, and that through a century full of vicissitudes and rich in literary development has made Schiller always in the widest sense the best beloved of German authors. There have been periods of violent reaction from Schiller's literary theory and manner; but the attacks made upon him have always been either conscious or involuntary tributes to the power of his individuality and of his influence; and none of them have ever availed to shake his popularity or to drag him down from his eminence as the sharer with Goethe of the highest glory in German literature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rime in Schiller's Poems It seems advisable for my purpose to retain the generally adopted plan of recognizing three periods in the poet's works (see page His works and his life during these respective periods are so very closely knit together, that each period is an integral unit in itself. For this reason, it is not wise to shift the lines of demarcation between the periods, even though it might be more convenient to do so in the present study. This book was released on 2016-09-09 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poetical Works of Friedrich Schiller I claim no more for the following translations than that they are a tolerably faithful rendering of the original poems of Schiller. I have made no attempt to seize upon Schiller's supposed meaning and clothe it in language of my own. My object has been to reproduce not only Schiller's thoughts, but Schiller's method of describing those thoughts, as accurately as was consistent with a change of language and the exigencies of verse. Where Schiller used the Elegiac metre, that metre has been adhered to in the translation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Minor Poems of Schiller, of the Second and Third Periods, With a Few of Those of Earlier Date: Translated for the Most Part Into the Same Metres With the Original Us those old classical metres especially the hexa meter and pentameter, it is impossible to deny that no such attempt has hitherto proved successful, to the extent of rendering them in any degree popular or attractive. I have accordingly, only in a few instances, ventured on the apparently hopeless experiment -conscious, nevertheless, that in abandoning it, I have sacrificed an object of possibly greater importance - that of exhibiting my Author in the dress which he has himself as sumed as most suitable to the sentiments he wished to convey. For, whatever may be alleged as to the impracticability of framing verses by rules of quantity, which do not exist in the language to which it is sought to apply them, it cannot be denied that the Germans have succeeded in intro ducing a species of rhythm, founded on these classical metres, which has become very popular among them; nor with all the attention I can give to the subject, have I been able to detect any such fundamental difference in the construction of our English idiom from that of its Teutonic sister, as should render it unfit for being the vehicle of simi lar musical impressions. I feel myself therefore driven to the conclusion that some other cause must be discovered for the want of success which. Book Shorter Poems of Goethe and Schiller

Download or read book Shorter Poems of Goethe and Schiller written by W. H. Van der Smissen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shorter Poems of Goethe and Schiller: In Chronological Order IT is no longer necessary to excuse or defend the chronological arrangement of poetical selections, which lends an additional interest both to the individual poems and to the collection as a whole. It is believed that the present little book is the first attempt not only to treat the two greatest of German poets conjointly in this way, but to weave together the biographical sketch and the poems in chronological order. While, however, the advantages and charms of such a plan are self-evident, it must not be forgotten that each poem is to-be regarded and enjoyed also for its own sake as a work of art, without reference to the temporary and accidental circumstances to which it owes its origin and existence.
