Book Verbal Protocols of Reading

Download or read book Verbal Protocols of Reading written by Michael Pressley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers from a variety of disciplines have collected verbal protocols of reading as a window on conscious reading processes. Because such work has occurred in different disciplines, many who have conducted verbal protocol analyses have been unaware of the research of others. This volume brings together the existing literature from the various fields in which verbal protocols of reading have been generated. In so doing, the authors provide an organized catalog of all conscious verbal processes reported in studies to date -- the most complete analysis of conscious reading now available in the literature. When the results of all of the studies are considered, there is clear support for a number of models of reading comprehension including reader response theories, schema perspectives, executive processing models, and bottom-up approaches such as the one proposed by van Dijk and Kintsch. The summary of results also demonstrates that none of the existing models goes far enough. Thus, a new framework -- constructively responsive reading -- is described. This new model encompasses reader response, schematic and executive processing, and induction from word- and phrase-level comprehension to higher-order meaning. The important concept in this new model is that readers respond to bits and pieces of text as they are encountered, all as part of the overarching goal of constructing meaning from text. This volume also includes a critical review of the thinking aloud methodology as it has been used thus far. This examination suggests that it continues to be an immature methodology, and that much work is needed if a complete theory of conscious processing during reading is to be developed via verbal protocol analysis. Finally, after reviewing what has been accomplished to date, the authors provide extensive discussion of the work that remains to be done and the adequacy of the verbal protocol methodology for permitting telling conclusions about text processing.

Book Children s Reading Comprehension and Assessment

Download or read book Children s Reading Comprehension and Assessment written by Scott G. Paris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-03-23 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originating in a recent CIERA conference held at the University of Michigan, this book brings together the nation's most distinguished researchers to examine how readers understand text and how comprehension is assessed. The first part provides both national and historical contexts for the study of reading comprehension. The second part examines how vocabulary, motivation, and expertise influence comprehension, and it includes analyses of the developmental course and correlates of comprehension. Chapters in the third part consider how schools focus on comprehension for instruction and assessment. The fourth part includes chapters on large-scale assessment that analyze how test formats and psychometric characteristics influence measures of reading comprehension. At the end of each part is a commentary--written by an expert--that reviews the chapters, critiques the main points, and synthesizes critical issues. Key features of this outstanding new book include: *Integration of Research and Practice--provides a bridge between conceptual issues studied by researchers concerned with reading comprehension theories and practical issues addressed by educators concerned with classroom instruction and assessment. *Comprehension Focus--provides a thorough history and rigorous research-based analyses of reading comprehension. *Assessment Focus--provides innovative approaches to comprehension assessment that include the influences of vocabulary, decoding, and motivation. *Synthetic Commentaries--provides periodic summaries that analyze and synthesize research, practices, and issues discussed in each part. *Expertise--contributing authors and commentators are highly respected authorities on reading comprehension (see table of contents). This text is appropriate for educational and psychological researchers, reading educators, and graduate students in education and psychology. It is part of the CIERA series, which includes the following volumes: Taylor and Pearson: Teaching Reading: Effective Schools, Accomplished Teachers (2002) Van Kleeck, Stahl, and Bauer: On Reading Books to Children: Parents and Teachers (2003) Hoffman and Schallert: The Texts in Elementary Classrooms (2005)

Book Cognitive Diagnostic Assessment for Education

Download or read book Cognitive Diagnostic Assessment for Education written by Jacqueline Leighton and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-05-14 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the current push toward educational reform, there is great potential for innovation and change, particularly in large scale testing. One area where change is possible is in cognitive diagnostic assessment. Researchers in educational measurement and cognitive psychology are finally in a position to design tests targeted specifically for providing valuable information about students' cognitive strengths and weaknesses. This self-contained volume organizes what is known about cognitive diagnostic assessment in education, including its conceptual and philosophical basis, methods, and applications. The complete list of topics includes educational demand, philosophical rationale, construct validity, cognitive methods, test construction, statistical models, and unresolved issues (e.g., how to best translate diagnostic information into teaching practices). Leighton and Gierl present a comprehensive and up-to-date examination of cognitive diagnostic assessment in education.

Book Second Language Reading and Vocabulary Learning

Download or read book Second Language Reading and Vocabulary Learning written by Thomas Huckin and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1993 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading ability and vocabulary knowledge are two of the most important components of performance in a second language, especially in academic settings. Each depend on the other, as vocabulary knowledge is the single most important factor in reading comprehension, while reading is the single most important means by which intermediate and advanced learners acquire new words. This symbiotic relationship is the subject of this volume. The authors argue that building vocabulary through reading is a fruitful but complex activity that needs better understanding and more careful guidance. This book is unique in its emphases on original research. Eight of the 14 chapters are empirical studies published for the first time, including classroom-based case studies, experimental research, and think-aloud protocol analysis. In every chapter, consideration is given to the pedagogical implications and possible applications of the research findings. Lengthy editorial comments at the end of each chapter reinforce this practical concern.

Book Reading

Book excerpt: There are two major themes in this manuscript. The first is that those who use reading tests often fail to consider why they are testing before they begin to ask what should be tested and how to test. The second them is the need for improved selection and interpretation of reading tests. This text is addressed to those who direct reading programs at various levels: state, district, and individual schools.
