Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Taytay's Tales: Collected and Retold As is always true with stories that are passed on orally from one generation to another, these folk tales must have been somewhat changed in the relating; but judging from the accuracy of detail insisted upon when they were told to me, I believe that the change has been very slight. To what ex tent, if any, they have been influenced by the folk lore of other countries and races, or the Indian tales have influenced those of other races, I do not know. There is a marked similarity between Little Red Riding Hood and juanita, Marianita, the Cat and the Bear, and also between Uncle Remus's Tar Baby and The Gum Baby; but the Indian relaters insist that these two tales were told to them by their grandfathers, and they were already then very old when my grandfather heard them. It is interesting to compare the stories of the differ ent pueblos, where the Indians have intermarried among themselves for so many generations that each pueblo is a distinct world unto itself. In Sehat chen, a book of myths collected from the Laguna Pueblo by John M. Gunn, the story The Coyote and the Horned Toad is almost identical with The F ox and the Lizard, which was also gotten from the Laguna Pueblo, but told by a different narrator. Book Contrabandista entre mundos fronterizos

Download or read book Contrabandista entre mundos fronterizos written by Nicolas Balutet and published by Editions Publibook. This book was released on 2010 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

This book was released on 2017-11-06 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Traditions of the Caddo, Collected Under the Auspices of the Carnegie Institution of Washington In the beginning the sun, stars, moon, and earth did not exist as they are now. Darkness ruled. With the lapse of time came a man, the only living being. Soon after his arrival a village sprang into existence with many thousands of people, and the people noticed that the man seemed to be everywhere. For a time he disappeared, and when he came back he had all kinds of seeds. He called all the people together and told them that the seeds were for them to eat, and gave them to every one. He told them that soon Darkness would go, and the people would see, for Darkness had promised that they should have a man by the name of Sun, and that he should be given power by the great-father-above; that whenever his time Should come to give them to the Sun he should be called or taken away from his mother, from our great mother Earth below that the direction where the Sun should come from should be called east, and the way of its going down should be called west. He also announced to the people that he was the first being created and that he had been given power by the same great-father-above, and that he had to carry out his work. He then told the people that it was very necessary that they should have one man abler and wiser than any other man among them, to be their head man; that they should call him chief that whatever the chief should command should be done by the people; that they should look upon him as a great father. The unknown man told the people to return to their homes, hold a council among themselves, and select a chief. Book Andele Or the Mexican Kiowa Captive

Download or read book Andele Or the Mexican Kiowa Captive written by J. J. Methvin and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Andele, or the Mexican-Kiowa Captive: A Story of Real Life Among the Indians Andres was the youngest son, and perhaps, physic ally, the Weakest in the household, but of quick wit and acute mental perception. Living on the frontier, exposed to the frequent marauding, plundering expedi tions of the various tribes Of wild Indians wandering over the country, they grew up inured to dangers and equipped for emergencies. People by necessity be come quick witted and skilled in the midst Of the trying emergencies that come up in a frontier life. Many a latent power and sleeping faculty have been stirred to life and called into action in the face Of a great danger or extreme emergency, that, in luxury and ease, would have slept on forever undeveloped. Trials, con icts, emergencies, are necessary to arouse and develop the latent faculties Of our being, hence we should count it all joy when they come. Often had the Martinez family to guard themselves against the stealthy attacks Of the Wild Mescaleros and other marauding tribes, and at the time this history begins (i866), there were rumors that the Apaches were prowling about in the vicinity, but as such rumors had been constantly circulated during the past month, the community had grown careless and no watch kept up. Evil be the day when a man ceases to watch. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Indians of the Mesa Verde Classic Reprint

Download or read book Indians of the Mesa Verde Classic Reprint written by Don Watson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Indians of the Mesa Verde Almost seven centuries ago the people turned their backs on their proud city and walked away. All of the forces of na ture seemed to be against them. The rains failed to fall; the springs ceased to flow. No corn grew in the fields. At last, weak from lack of food and water, and bewildered by the fail ure of the gods to answer their hysterical prayers they sur rendered to the inevitable. Sadly they turned their backs on the once happy city and walked down the canyon, never to return. Cliff Palace, the crowning glory of the Mesa Verde, was a silent, deserted city. In Spite of the protection offered by the cave Cliff Palace has suffered from the leveling forces of time. The owls and pack rats have been careless -tenants and the lack of repair is evident. Some of the walls have cracked; a few have fallen. Foundations have slipped; roofs have disappeared. The once bright plaster is peeling from the walls.
