Book excerpt: Gold Hill is a product of the frontier days, when bold men sought golden riches despite ongoing hardships. The 1860 discovery of the famous Gold Hill Pocket, overlooking the present townsite, brought about its name with a gold rush that continued for decades and spilled into the nearby creeks and valleys, including mines with names like the Millionaire, Lucky Bart, and Roaring Gimlet. In 1884, the railroad bypassed neighboring settlements, which made Gold Hill a center depot and created ghost towns along the way. While the cry of "Gold! Gold! Gold!" filled the air, women and families drove in roots that tamed the town. When the area's mining and lumbering industries phased out, Gold Hill was then rediscovered in the late 20th century by folks searching for a small-town life, exquisite surroundings, and proximity to the legendary Rogue River. Wine tasting and vineyards replaced areas where stagecoaches once stopped and orchards grew.

Book On Gold Hill

Download or read book On Gold Hill written by Jaclyn Moyer and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2024-03-26 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A young South Asian American woman's story of reconnecting with her identity, family, and heritage through sustainable farming In 2012, 25-year-old Jackie Moyer—the daughter of a forbidden marriage between a white American father and a Punjabi American mother—leased 10 acres of land in Gold Hill, California, and embarked on a career in organic farming. With a fractured relationship to her heritage, Moyer saw an opportunity for repair when she learned of a nearly lost heirloom wheat variety called Sonora. Sonora wasn’t just an heirloom wheat strain; it was her own cultural heirloom. Its history can be traced back to Punjab, the Indian state where Moyer’s own roots are planted. In growing the grain on her farm, she began to uncover the multigenerational story of her family’s resilience. From California to Punjab, the past to the present, Jackie maps her personal story atop the entangled histories of wheat cultivation and the rise of the organic farming movement. With a passion for dismantling the exploitative big-agriculture industry, she examines how the development of high-yielding varieties and chemical fertilizers has harmed our relationship with food, the planet, and each other. Braiding memoir with historical inquiry, On Gold Hill explores the complexities of the immigrant experience, illuminates the ways colonialism and capitalism constrain our food system, and investigates what it means to lose—and to reclaim—one’s heritage.

Book Managing Change in Rural Communities

Download or read book Managing Change in Rural Communities written by Carl N. Nelson and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans who make their living from the land - and those who live in small communities closely bound to the land - know the importance of stewardship. This booklet is about stewardship - and the benefits of adding design skills to the mix of talents found in rural America. It recounts the experiences of three landscape architects placed in three Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) areas for a 2-year pilot project. They applied their skills within the context of RC&D objectives chosen by local citizens. They used inexpensive computer-based imaging technology to communicate graphically various conservation and development alternatives. The results in Georgia, Iowa, and Utah were exciting and gratifying: citizens were eager both to improve the stewardship of their land and to participate in shaping their communities in new and productive ways. This booklet offers a sampling of the stories and the techniques used, as well as information about available resources.
