This book was released on 2018-05-03 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scenes in Hawaii, or Life in the Sandwich Islands As I have been induced by kind friends to give publicity in this form to my notes and observations while on my journey to Hawaii and stay there, I must ask them and others who may care to read them, to be lenient in criticism, and to remem ber my only wish is to interest by telling them a little of this small Kingdom in the Pacific, generally known only as the most encouraging exemplification of the noble efforts of missionaries to civilize and christianize a savage and voluptuous race. Alas, for this, the finest example of self-sacrificing men and women, for the boast is, sad to say only a boast; and alas, as the group of Islands which Captain Cook discoveredtin 1776 - and on one of which, Hawaii - he was murdered on his second visit in 1778, at Kealakekua Bay. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hawaii: Scenes and Impressions OF all the books that have been written on Hawaii, the pages that follow consti tute the least pretentious. Mine, indeed, is a book at all only by accident of phys ical form. It boasts no architectonics, scarcely even a beginning and an end. Its sole unity is the unity derived from being the record, by a single pen, of some of the experiences of a single month. It wanders almost consciously; it leaps from the gen eral to the intimate and particular with no apology, with hardly even a transition. In that sense, it is ragged - ragged like almost any month of life. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Trip to Hawaii Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Trip to Hawaii Classic Reprint written by Charles Warren Stoddard and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Trip to Hawaii Many things have happened in the little island country of Hawaii, set far out in the wide Pacific, since 1885, the year when Charles Warren Stoddard visited it and wrote "A Trip to Hawaii," still the best known and most admired book on these isles of the Blessed. His tender and sympathetic insight into the tropic people and all their concerns, his keen enjoyment and appreciation of all the varied phases of the delightful journey, his artist's eye to see and artist's hand to picture forth the beautiful aspects of nature where nature is most prodigal of her charms, all unite to make his writings on Hawaii dear to every one that loves the beautiful in nature and in literary art. But American influences had grown so prominent in Island affairs that events have moved with American swiftness even in that languorous and lovely land. The native dynasty in this sweep of events has fallen, and the manner of its fall, although the matter of much heated controversy, first gave the power into the hands of the white population, and then extinguished Hawaii as a separate government altogether. No longer does Queen Liliuokalani hold her strangely mixed court, where the ancient royal robes aa feathers were draped about shoulders clad in garments cut in the Parisian mode. No longer are the stately kahilis waved in pomp over the sovereign by attendants dressed in the conventional claw-hammer coat. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from One Summer in Hawaii Being told they were the Sandwich, or Hawaiian Islands as they are now called, in the mid-pacific Ocean, more than two thousand one hundred miles distant, I was startled at the flippant suggestion of the Occidentals to whom time and space seemed as nothing. To cross the Atlant1c had always seemed to me to be a grave undertak ing, but here I was seriously advised to pack my satchel and run down two thousand miles into the Pacific, as if for a day's outing. Book The Coming Hawaii Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Coming Hawaii Classic Reprint written by Joseph King Goodrich and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Coming Hawaii It will be noted, when reading the succeeding pages, that the author has followed the example of one group of the other writers about Hawaii. These writers may be divided into two principal classes: those who have little to say which is not praise, and those who condemn entirely. If the present writer has placed himself in the first division, it has been done deliberately and with what is considered ample reason. The Hawaiian archipelago is attractive in almost every way, and its charms are of the kind which grow in number and degree for him whose first impressions were favourable; while even for him who had to admit some disappointment at first, a lengthened sojourn almost invariably transforms this into enthusiasm. There is little to say in the way of introduction to the chapters which follow. The author has been adversely criticised for not venturing into the dangerous field of prophecy when discussing the future of some other countries which have been taken as the subjects of other volumes in this series: China and Mexico, for example. He still believes that he was wise in refraining from all attempts to guess at the political future of those countries, for recent events have more than tended to show how hazardous prophecy would have been. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of Old Hawaii Alexander's History, written for public school purposes, the best Hawaiian history now available, is necessarily condensed. Other books bearing upon various phases of Hawaiian life, were issued in limited editions, and moreover, are mostly out of print. Under these circumstances, it has been suggested to the writer that the best method of meeting the present public desire for information is to collect and publish the personal memoirs, reminiscences and writings of some of the older residents of Hawaii, who, through observation, were able to give first hand evidence of what they saw; or through contact with those living, were able to record the traditions and evidence of what had previously transpired. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hawaii IF you go to the crest of the Rocky Mountains, you will see the clouds - the great white warships of the sky - sailing majestically along beneath, and settling down into the valleys and gorges; and you will be awed by the thunder of heaven's cannonade and the rapid play of the lightning. But you Will see the birds flying through and above it all, to sing their songs in the clear blue ether! It was not my intention when I went to Hawaii to write at all about the country, excepting in my private correspondence. My work was of another kind, and was very engrossing and laborious, leaving me nor time nor strength for anything of the sort. When the season of rest and leisure came to me, after seven years, I determined to recollect scenes and incidents, and to put them into book form - but certainly not with the hape of fame or wealth, but partly with the pure intention of speaking an unselfish, an honest, and a truthful word for those along whose road during my long stay, I saw no flowers strewed or garlands thrown, nor even stones removed.
