Book God on the Western Front

    Book Details:
  • Author : Joseph F. Byrnes
  • Publisher : Penn State Press
  • Release : 2023-08-31
  • ISBN : 0271095970
  • Pages : 316 pages

Download or read book God on the Western Front written by Joseph F. Byrnes and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2023-08-31 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1914 to 1918, religious believers and hopeful skeptics tried to find meaning and purpose behind divinely willed destruction. God on the Western Front is a history of lived religion across national boundaries, religious affiliations, and class during World War I, utilizing an expansive record of primary sources. Joseph F. Byrnes takes readers on a tour of the battlefields of France, listening to the words of German, French, and English soldiers; going behind the lines to hear from the men and women who provided pastoral and medical care; and reviewing the religious writings of priests, bishops, ministers, and rabbis as they tried to make sense of it all. The story begins with citizens at home as they responded to the obligation to make war and then focuses on the “God-talk” and “nation-talk” that soldiers used to express their foundational religious experiences. Byrnes’s study attends to the words of average men who struggled to articulate their religious sentiments, alongside the generals Helmuth von Moltke, Ferdinand Foch, and Douglas Haig and the soldier theologians Franz Rosenzweig, Paul Tillich, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, and Geoffrey Studdert Kennedy. In doing so, he shows how religious and battle experience are intertwined and showcases the wide range of spiritual responses that emerged across boundaries. Going beyond the typical constraints of studies focused either on one nation or one confessional affiliation, Byrnes’s international and interfaith approach breaks new ground. It will appeal to scholars and students of modern European history, religious history, and the history of war.

Book Crime scene church

Download or read book Crime scene church written by Kurt Bauer and published by tredition. This book was released on 2019-01-21 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I became a victim of abuse in the church when I was a pupil in a Franciscan boarding school. My parents sent me there in order to give me a well-founded education under the protection of the monastic welfare. However, the boarding school turned out to be a nightmare. The Fathers had a double face: friendly on the outside and violent on the inside. Sexually abused several times and violently knocked down, I became alienated from myself. My inner life had shattered. Gaps in my consciousness as well as blind spots in my perception and thinking were the result. For me, this became quite normal; for many years there was a total disconnect between my past and present. Only when my life broke apart and I became suicidal did I realize that I needed help. From then on I wanted to know what had driven me into such hopelessness and alienation from life. Gradually, I regained access ...

Book The Director s Idea

Book excerpt: As a director, you must have a concept, a "director's idea", to shape your approach to the actors, the camera, and the script. With this clear idea your film will be deeper and more effective, and you will be able to differentiate--and therefore make the choice--between competent directing and great directing. Using case studies of famous directors as real-world examples of "director's ideas", the author has provided the theory and the practice to help directors immediately improve their work.

  • Author : Eric Nelson
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2017-06-26
  • ISBN : 1317107195
  • Pages : 343 pages

Download or read book Layered Landscapes written by Eric Nelson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the conceptualization and construction of sacred space in a wide variety of faith traditions: Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and the religions of Japan. It deploys the notion of "layered landscapes" in order to trace the accretions of praxis and belief, the tensions between old and new devotional patterns, and the imposition of new religious ideas and behaviors on pre-existing religious landscapes in a series of carefully chosen locales: Cuzco, Edo, Geneva, Granada, Herat, Istanbul, Jerusalem, Kanchipuram, Paris, Philadelphia, Prague, and Rome. Some chapters hone in on the process of imposing novel religious beliefs, while others focus on how vestiges of displaced faiths endured. The intersection of sacred landscapes with political power, the world of ritual, and the expression of broader cultural and social identity are also examined. Crucially, the volume reveals that the creation of sacred space frequently involved more than religious buildings and was a work of historical imagination and textual expression. While a book of contrasts as much as comparisons, the volume demonstrates that vital questions about the location of the sacred and its reification in the landscape were posed by religious believers across the early-modern world.
