With money, clothes, good wishes and friendships added to gratitude to endure the balance of their days. The Marengo-county Colony, composed of French refugees from the wars of the Empire, mingled with American settlers of a higher class from the older States, formed a social circle in that primitive wilderness, unexcelled by any society of the country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Red Eagle and the Wars With the Creek, Indians of Alabama A work of this kind necessarily makes no pre tension to originality in its materials but while all that is here related is to be found in books, there is no one book devoted exclusively to the history of the Creek war or to the life of William Weatherford, the Red Eagle. The materials here used have been gathered from many sources some.of them from books which only incidentally mention the matters here treated, touching them as a part of larger subjects, and many of them from books which have been long out of print, and are therefore inaccessible to readers gen erally. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Richard Hurdis: Tale of Alabama Richard hurdis was singularly successful with the public in spite of much hostile criticism. It was objected, to the story, that it was of too gloomy and savage a character. But the en tire aspect of a sparsely-settled forest, or mountain country, is grave and saddening, even where society is stationary and consistent; and, where society is only in process of formation the saddening and the grave in its aspect are but too apt to take on even sterner features, and to grow into the gloomy and ferocious. It is quite enough, in answer to the objection, to say that the general protraiture is not only a truthful one, in the present case, but that the materials are really of histor ical character. The story is a genuine chronicle of the border region where the scene is laid, and of the period when the date is fixed. Its action, throughout, is founded on well-known facts. Its personages were real, living men; being, doing, and suffer ing, as here reported. Nothing has been extenuate, nothing has been set down in malice. A softer coloring might. Have been employed, and, more frequently, scenes of repose might have been introduced for relieving the intense and fierce aspects of the story; but these would have been out of place in a narrative so dramatic of cast, and where the action is so rapid.
