Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tourists' Guide Through the Hawaiian Islands: Descriptive of Their Scenes and Scenery Hawaii is a land of perennial spring. It is nature's garden of fruits, owers and most luxuriant verdure, where figs and straw berries are as abundant and luscious in December as in June; where roses, lilies and carnations bloom the year round, as brilliant and fragrant in winter as in summer. Its climate can justly be called semi-tropical, without the Oppressive heat of the tropics or the insidious chills and fevers of the temperate zone. Winter and summer are simply conventional terms, and are distinguished from each other chie y by the length of the days and the brilliancy of the moon, shining as only it can in the tropics. Frost and snow are unknown, save as occasional object lessons on the mountain summits that peer far above the cloud-belts of Hawaii and Maui. Tornadoes and cyclones never disturb its serene atmosphere, and the records of a century chronicle no storms to compare with the destruo tive hurricanes of the East and West Indies, or even with modern American blizzards. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Trip to Hawaii A trip to the Hawaiian Islands from San Francisco in one of the Oceanic Company's United States and Royal Mail steamships, is perhaps, the most enjoyable in the whole possible range of sea excursions. The distance, 2100 miles, is invariably covered by these superb vessels in seven days. A three thousand ton steam ship, fitted with every modern convenience, and capable of run ning sixteen knots an hour, sails twice a month from the Oceanic Company's Wharf, foot of Folsom street, San Francisco, for Hono lulu, and returns at similar stated intervals, thus giving practically a fortnightly steamer service between the Pacific Coast and the Hawaiian Islands. Book excerpt: Excerpt from One Summer in Hawaii Being told they were the Sandwich, or Hawaiian Islands as they are now called, in the mid-pacific Ocean, more than two thousand one hundred miles distant, I was startled at the flippant suggestion of the Occidentals to whom time and space seemed as nothing. To cross the Atlant1c had always seemed to me to be a grave undertak ing, but here I was seriously advised to pack my satchel and run down two thousand miles into the Pacific, as if for a day's outing. Captain Clark, who succeeded Cook in command, landed a body of mariners, slew many natives and burned their huts to the ground. Hostilities ceased on the condition that Cook's remains be returned, which being done, they were buried in the placid waters of Kalakakua Bay, February 21, 1779. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hawaii IF you go to the crest of the Rocky Mountains, you will see the clouds - the great white warships of the sky - sailing majestically along beneath, and settling down into the valleys and gorges; and you will be awed by the thunder of heaven's cannonade and the rapid play of the lightning. But you Will see the birds flying through and above it all, to sing their songs in the clear blue ether! It was not my intention when I went to Hawaii to write at all about the country, excepting in my private correspondence. My work was of another kind, and was very engrossing and laborious, leaving me nor time nor strength for anything of the sort. When the season of rest and leisure came to me, after seven years, I determined to recollect scenes and incidents, and to put them into book form - but certainly not with the hape of fame or wealth, but partly with the pure intention of speaking an unselfish, an honest, and a truthful word for those along whose road during my long stay, I saw no flowers strewed or garlands thrown, nor even stones removed. Book The Coming Hawaii Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Coming Hawaii Classic Reprint written by Joseph King Goodrich and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Coming Hawaii It will be noted, when reading the succeeding pages, that the author has followed the example of one group of the other writers about Hawaii. These writers may be divided into two principal classes: those who have little to say which is not praise, and those who condemn entirely. If the present writer has placed himself in the first division, it has been done deliberately and with what is considered ample reason. The Hawaiian archipelago is attractive in almost every way, and its charms are of the kind which grow in number and degree for him whose first impressions were favourable; while even for him who had to admit some disappointment at first, a lengthened sojourn almost invariably transforms this into enthusiasm. There is little to say in the way of introduction to the chapters which follow. The author has been adversely criticised for not venturing into the dangerous field of prophecy when discussing the future of some other countries which have been taken as the subjects of other volumes in this series: China and Mexico, for example. He still believes that he was wise in refraining from all attempts to guess at the political future of those countries, for recent events have more than tended to show how hazardous prophecy would have been. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hawaii: Scenes and Impressions OF all the books that have been written on Hawaii, the pages that follow consti tute the least pretentious. Mine, indeed, is a book at all only by accident of phys ical form. It boasts no architectonics, scarcely even a beginning and an end. Its sole unity is the unity derived from being the record, by a single pen, of some of the experiences of a single month. It wanders almost consciously; it leaps from the gen eral to the intimate and particular with no apology, with hardly even a transition. In that sense, it is ragged - ragged like almost any month of life. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Trip to the Hawaiian Islands

Download or read book A Trip to the Hawaiian Islands written by Orville Elder and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Trip to the Hawaiian Islands: With the Press Congress of the World Three weeks time in Hawaii is not long enough for one to see and know all about Hawaii, but the conditions under which the writer moved while there made it possible for him to see a great deal in a short while. The letters which comprise this little volume were written on train, on boat, in hotel room, or wherever it was possible to find footing for a small portable typewriter and pound off a few lines. They are published in this compact form, not because they are entitled to any great consideration from the reading public, but because I found it impossible to supply the demand for exchange copies, of our paper - The Evening Journal, Washington, Iowa - containing the letters. My product became too voluminous for exchange circulation. I desire in this connection to acknowledge the very great debt which, in common with the many other World's Press Congress delegates, I owe to the various Hawaiian committees who saw to it that there was not a dull moment during our stay on the islands.
