Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this fascinating collection of essays, noted cultural critic Geoffrey Hartman raises the essential question of where we can find the real or authentic in today's world, and how this affects the way we can understand our human predicament. Hartman explores such issues as the fantasy of total and perfect information available on the Internet, the biographical excesses of tell-all daytime talk shows, and how we can understand what is "true" in biographical and testimonial writing. And, what, he asks, is the ethical point of all this personal testimony? What has it really taught us? Underlying the entire book is a question of how the Holocaust has shaped the possibilities for truth and for the writing of an authentic life story in today's world, and how we can approach the world in a meaningful way. Hartman produces a meditation on how an appreciation of the aesthetic qualities of art and writing may help us to answer these questions of meaning.

Book Scars Like Wings

Download or read book Scars Like Wings written by Erin Stewart and published by Delacorte Press. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relatable, heartbreaking, and real, this is a story of resilience--the perfect novel for readers of powerful contemporary fiction like Girl in Pieces and Every Last Word. Before, I was a million things. Now I'm only one. The Burned Girl. Ava Lee has lost everything there is to lose: Her parents. Her best friend. Her home. Even her face. She doesn't need a mirror to know what she looks like--she can see her reflection in the eyes of everyone around her. A year after the fire that destroyed her world, her aunt and uncle have decided she should go back to high school. Be "normal" again. Whatever that is. Ava knows better. There is no normal for someone like her. And forget making friends--no one wants to be seen with the Burned Girl, now or ever. But when Ava meets a fellow survivor named Piper, she begins to feel like maybe she doesn't have to face the nightmare alone. Sarcastic and blunt, Piper isn't afraid to push Ava out of her comfort zone. Piper introduces Ava to Asad, a boy who loves theater just as much as she does, and slowly, Ava tries to create a life again. Yet Piper is fighting her own battle, and soon Ava must decide if she's going to fade back into her scars . . . or let the people by her side help her fly. "A heartfelt and unflinching look at the reality of being a burn survivor and at the scars we all carry. This book is for everyone, burned or not, who has ever searched for a light in the darkness." --Stephanie Nielson, New York Times bestselling author of Heaven Is Here and a burn survivor

Book Strength in Scars

Download or read book Strength in Scars written by Ruth Almada and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2018-09-27 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abuse in any form is devastating, and stories of abuse are never easy to tell—and they are certainly never easy to live. Yet there are many avenues that people take to seek a deep, inner healing of the heart, mind, body, and spirit, and for Ruth Almada, telling her story would be part of her journey. Strength in Scars is one mother’s story of facing, defeating, and moving beyond the many accounts of abuse in her family. Author Ruth Almada shares a raw and authentic story about the realities of abuse that she and many others have faced—realties that many are far too ashamed to even talk about. Yet she boldly speaks her mind and brings hidden abuses to the surface, where she is able to bring hope to those suffering the same fate. Amid personal tragedy, and with God’s grace, she discovered a purpose that was so profound that it changed the course of her life—and no one is beyond the reach of God’s grace. It can be overwhelming and difficult to share your greatest and deepest, darkest pain completely to help another, especially when it exposes generational lines of shame and humiliation. Yet hope can come from these fires of pain, and enough is enough—especially when the answer is much easier than some choose to believe.

Book Turning Your Scars into Stars

Download or read book Turning Your Scars into Stars written by Edith Dolores Roman and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2016-09-06 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turning Your Scars into Stars is about emotional scars on the heart, spirit, and soul. These types of scars are the most difficult and painful to heal. They consist of abandonment, chronic hurt, pain, rejection, and death. Two verses that comfort me tremendously are Deuteronomy 31:8, which says, The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged (NIV), and also 1 Corinthians 10:13, which says, God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can endure it (NIV). My name is Edith Dolores Roman, and I must be honest and tell you that sometimes when life hit me full force, I felt that the challenges I faced were beyond my ability to overcome! Starting with my childhood, I was orphaned at age eleven, became a foster child, and eventually struggled to raise my two children as a single mother. However, with prayer, persistence, and the strength of God, I was able to overcome, and you are able to also! One more verse that helps me to continue to persevere through my problems is found in 2 Corinthians 12:9, when God reminds his servants, My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness (NIV). This book is intended to help people in struggles go from the pit to the peak! My prayer is that this book will help you heal and that it will nurture your soul, just like Proverbs 16:24 says, Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones (NIV).
