Book excerpt: 'Living in the past. It's always said pejoratively, as if the past is necessarily inferior to the future, or at any rate less important; nobody's ever condemned for looking forward, only back. But the truth is that we live in the past, whether we like it or not. That's where our life takes shape. Somewhere ahead, however near or far, is the end. But behind, shrouded in clouds of forgetting, lies the beginning'. This book about Scarborough IS unashamedly about looking back from the first mention of Scarborough in 8000 BC to the present day. It is not a formal history; rather a miscellany of interesting facts culled from many sources stretching back over the years.

Book excerpt: First, a word of warning! This book is not about the BBC TV show Mastermind, or the much revered late Magnus Magnusson. This book starts with the Fowler family tree in 1541 and then moves swiftly on. Rather than a true biography the book branches out into what was happening elsewhere around the time of which I write. World War II; The Long March (sometimes called The Death March); details of the first jet plane flight; National Service; Ouija boards; meeting Elvis Presley; and Freddie Trueman; the Berlin Wall; Germany, Russia, Italy, The Maldives, America; Castle Howard; La Jurade de Saint-Emilion; meeting HRH Prince Charles; a court case; meeting the Lord Chief Justice, and so on... The book is intended to be light hearted and humorous. As well as being a memoir it also comprises part travelogue and part social history. It also provides a miscellany of other happenings, doings and yet more anecdotes, which occurred throughout my lifetime

His revelations about secret language buried in the U.S. Constitution-and hints about an explosive missing letter of Thomas Jefferson's-may be enough to cause an irreparable tear in the fabric of the nation . . . and perhaps drove a volatile youth to homicide. But Paul Madriani thinks a troubled young man with dark connections has been chosen as a scapegoat to cover up something far deadlier that festers in America's political heart. And in the wake of the strange disappearance of a Supreme Court judge, Madriani must survive long enough to find the devastating answers hidden in the shadow of power.

  • ISBN : 1496849361
  • Pages : 223 pages

Download or read book Poor Gal written by Dan Gutstein and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2023-12-15 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poor Gal: The Cultural History of Little Liza Jane chronicles the origins and evolution of a folk tune beloved by millions worldwide. Dan Gutstein delves into the trajectory of the “Liza Jane” family of songs, including the most popular variant “Li’l Liza Jane.” Likely originating among enslaved people on southern plantations, the songs are still performed and recorded centuries later. Evidence for these tunes as part of the repertoire of enslaved people comes from the Works Progress Administration ex-slave narratives that detail a range of lyrics and performance rituals related to “Liza Jane.” Civil War soldiers and minstrel troupes eventually adopted certain variants, including “Goodbye Liza Jane.” This version of the song prospered in the racist environment of burnt cork minstrelsy. Other familiar variants, such as “Little Liza Jane,” likely remained fixed in folk tradition until early twentieth-century sheet music popularized the melody. New genres and a slate of stellar performers broadly adopted these folk songs, bringing the tunes to far-reaching listeners. In 1960, to an audience of more than thirty million viewers, Harry Belafonte performed “Little Liza Jane” on CBS. The song was featured on such popular radio shows as Fibber McGee & Molly; films such as Coquette; and a Mickey Mouse animation. Hundreds of recognizable performers—including Fats Domino, Bing Crosby, Nina Simone, Mississippi John Hurt, and Pete Seeger—embraced the “Liza Jane” family. David Bowie even released “Liza Jane” as his first single. Gutstein documents these famous renditions, as well as lesser-known characters integral to the song’s history. Drawing upon a host of cultural insights from experts—including Eileen Southern, Carl Sandburg, Thomas Talley, LeRoi Jones/Amiri Baraka, Charles Wolfe, Langston Hughes, and Alan Lomax—Gutstein charts the cross-cultural implications of a voyage unlike any other in the history of American folk music.

Book Songs of the Vietnam Conflict

    Book Details:
  • Author : James E. Perone
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA
  • Release : 2001-08-30
  • ISBN : 0313016798
  • Pages : 182 pages

Download or read book Songs of the Vietnam Conflict written by James E. Perone and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2001-08-30 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering the widest scope of any study of one of popular music's most important eras, Songs of the Vietnam Conflict treats both anti-war and pro-government songs of the 1960s and early 1970s, from widely known selections such as Give Peace a Chance and Blowin' in the Wind to a variety of more obscure works. These are songs that permeated the culture, through both recordings and performances at political gatherings and concerts alike, and James Perone explores the complex relationship between music and the society in which it is written. This music is not merely an indicator of the development of the American popular song; it both reflected and shaped the attitudes of all who were exposed to it. Whereas in previous wars, musicians rallied behind the government in the way of Aaron Copland and Samuel Barber, the Vietnam conflict provoked anger, frustration, and rage, all of which comes through in the songs of the time. This reference work provides indispensable coverage of this phenomenon, in chapters devoted to Anti-War Songs, Pro-Government Songs, and what might be called Plight-of-the-Soldier (or Veteran) songs. A selected discography guides the reader to the most notable recordings, all of which, together, provide a unique and important perspective on perhaps the 20th century's most contentious time.
