Book excerpt: A delightful romp through the weaknesses and foibles of the upper social classes as they set about finding entertainment for themselves in Scarborough, miles from the comfort of their homes and staff back in London. Scarborough Fair picks up the story of the adventuring Tom, as he returns to England flat broke. His brother, Lord Frontbotham, (pronounced Fro'tham), is marrying the young Miss Helen, sight unseen, having heard she is worth a good few thousand a year in income. When Tom's vain, pompous, elder brother turns him down for a loan, Tom hatches a plan to marry Miss Helen and claim her inheritance for himself. Mr Lovelace, in Scarborough for the wedding, has fallen suddenly and madly in love with a beautiful young widow seen at a distance in the theatre. When Colonel Cholmondeley discovers the widow he has been pursuing is secretly meeting his good friend, Mr Lovelace, he decides to do the only decent thing: he attempts to seduce Mr Lovelace's lovely wife, Amanda. Planning a final fling before his wedding day, Lord Frontbotham also pursues the lovely Amanda, declaring, "I felt it my duty to corrupt her". Taking advantage of the complicated trysts evolving in Scarborough, Tom visits Miss Helen pretending to be his elder brother. All is going to plan until the real Lord Frontbotham turns up unexpectedly. Sea, sex, and social consequences. What more could one ask for? With wit and wry humour worthy of the great masters, Hills' works are set to go down as modern classics in their own right. If you get a chance, beg, borrow, or if all else fails even purchase a copy. Filled with enough witty quotations to dine out on for weeks. Based on the restoration comedy drama, The Relapse, which was considered too risqué to be performed for almost 300 years, Scarborough Fair is an 8 handed play (including doubling of parts) and a run time of around two hours, with a convenient place for a break midway.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of those raised Catholic, just 13% still attend Mass weekly, and 37% say they have 'no religion'. But is this all the fault of Vatican II, and its runaway reforms? Or are wider social, cultural, and moral forces primarily to blame? In 1962, Pope John XXIII opened the Second Vatican Council with the prophecy that 'a new day is dawning on the Church, bathing her in radiant splendour'. Desiring 'to impart an ever increasing vigour to the Christian life of the faithful', the Council Fathers devoted particular attention to the laity, and set in motion a series of sweeping reforms. The most significant of these centred on refashioning the Church's liturgy—'the source and summit of the Christian life'—in order to make 'it pastorally efficacious to the fullest degree'. Over fifty years on, however, the statistics speak for themselves. In America, only 15% of cradle Catholics say that they attend Mass on a weekly basis; meanwhile, 35% no longer even tick the 'Catholic box' on surveys. In Britain, the signs are direr still. Catholicism is not the only Christian group to have suffered serious declines since the 1960s. If anything Catholics exhibit higher church attendance, and better retention, than most Protestant churches do. If Vatican II is not the cause of Catholicism's crisis, might it instead be the secret to its comparative success? Mass Exodus is the first serious historical and sociological study of Catholic lapsation and disaffiliation. Drawing on a wide range of theological, historical, and sociological sources, Stephen Bullivant offers a comparative study of secularization across two famously contrasting religious cultures: Britain and the USA.

Book All s Faire in Middle School

Download or read book All s Faire in Middle School written by Victoria Jamieson and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2017-09-05 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calling all Raina Telgemeier fans! The Newbery Honor-winning author of Roller Girl is back with a heartwarming graphic novel about starting middle school, surviving your embarrassing family, and the Renaissance Faire. Eleven-year-old Imogene (Impy) has grown up with two parents working at the Renaissance Faire, and she's eager to begin her own training as a squire. First, though, she'll need to prove her bravery. Luckily Impy has just the quest in mind—she'll go to public school after a life of being homeschooled! But it's not easy to act like a noble knight-in-training in middle school. Impy falls in with a group of girls who seem really nice (until they don't) and starts to be embarrassed of her thrift shop apparel, her family's unusual lifestyle, and their small, messy apartment. Impy has always thought of herself as a heroic knight, but when she does something really mean in order to fit in, she begins to wonder whether she might be more of a dragon after all. As she did in Roller Girl, Victoria Jamieson perfectly—and authentically—captures the bittersweetness of middle school life with humor, warmth, and understanding.

In “Final Vows,” Mu Mao the Magnificent, the feline bodhisattva from Scarborough’s novel Last Refuge, helps guide a reincarnated cat in solving the mystery of his own betrayal and murder. “Whirlwinds” takes place on the Diné Trail of Tears, when the US military force-marched ninety-five hundred Navajo people from their ancient, sacred homeland to the barren Bosque Redondo area surrounding New Mexico’s Fort Sumner. A coveted princess packs on pounds when a disgruntled suitor casts an evil spell on her in “Worse Than the Curse.” How is a plump princess to cope? And “Long Time Coming Home,” cowritten with Scarborough’s fellow Vietnam veteran Rick Reaser, is a story of the battles and ghosts many vets face after returning from the war. These and other stories capably demonstrate Scarborough’s breadth of skill.
