Download or read book Corridor Cultures written by Maryann Dickar and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2008-11-01 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many students, the classroom is not the central focus of school. The school's corridors and doorways are areas largely given over to student control, and it is here that they negotiate their cultural identities and status among their peer groups. The flavor of this “corridor culture” tends to reflect the values and culture of the surrounding community. Based on participant observation in a racially segregated high school in New York City, Corridor Cultures examines the ways in which school spaces are culturally produced, offering insight into how urban students engage their schooling. Focusing on the tension between the student-dominated halls and the teacher-dominated classrooms and drawing on insights from critical geographers and anthropology, it provides new perspectives on the complex relationships between Black students and schools to better explain the persistence of urban school failure and to imagine ways of resolving the contradictions that undermine the educational prospects of too many of the nations' children. Dickar explores competing discourses about who students are, what the purpose of schooling should be, and what knowledge is valuable as they become spatialized in daily school life. This spatial analysis calls attention to the contradictions inherent in official school discourses and those generated by students and teachers more locally. By examining the form and substance of student/school engagement, Corridor Cultures argues for a more nuanced and broader framework that reads multiple forms of resistance and recognizes the ways students themselves are conflicted about schooling.

Download or read book Integrating Advanced Technology into Technology Education written by Michael Hacker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technology is a dynamic field in which new developments take place continuously. Education traditionally lacks behind the latest developments in this subject area. Therefore it is necessary to consider updating education regularly. The NATO Advanced Research Workshop "Integrating Advanced Technology into Technology Education" discussed necessary changes in technology education caused by new developments in technology. It was held in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, October 9-12, 1990. Our impression is that there was a fruitful interaction between educationalists, policy makers, and industrialists. These groups all have their own way of approaching technology education and the conference gave them an opportunity for sharing ideas that come from these various approaches. The participants felt that the issue of integrating advanced technology into technology education was quite relevant. There was a high degree of commitment in presentations and discussions. This led to the formulation of a number of recommendations to people in NATO countries who are involved in technology education. We as organizers appreciate the contributions of many people to this conference: NATO for financing it; Dr. Thomas Liao in particular for stimulating both NATO and us to realize it; the presenters for setting the scene for discussions; all participants for sharing ideas and perspectives; and finally Springer-Verlag for publishing the proceedings. April 1991 Michael Hacker Anthony Gordon Marc de Vries Introduction From the main theme of the conference --Integrating Advanced Technology into Technology Education --we distilled six questions: 1.

This comprehensive two-volume reference book is the first to analyze the central role of work and the workforce in U.S. life from the Industrial Revolution through today's information economy. Drawing on a variety of disciplines—economics, public policy, law, human and civil rights, cultural studies, and organizational psychology—its 256 entries examine key events, concepts, institutions, and individuals in labor history. Entries also tackle tough contemporary questions that reflect the conflicts inherent in capitalism. What is the impact of work on families and communities? On minority and immigrant populations? How shall we respond to changing work roles and the growing influence of the transnational corporation? Work in America describes and evaluates attempts to address social and class issues—affirmative action, occupational health and safety, corporate management science, and trade unionism and organized labor—and offers the kind of comprehensive understanding needed to discover workable solutions.
