Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The enamel of human teeth is generally regarded as a brittle material with low fracture toughness. Consequently, the contributions of this tissue in resisting tooth fracture and the importance of its complex microstructure have been largely overlooked. The primary objective of this dissertation is to characterize the role of enamel's microstructure and degree of decussation on the fracture behavior of human enamel. The importance of the protein content and aging on the fracture toughness of enamel were also explored. Incremental crack growth in sections of human enamel was achieved using a special inset Compact Tension (CT) specimen configuration. Crack extension was achieved in two orthogonal directions, i.e. longitudinal and transverse to the prism axes. Fracture surfaces and the path of crack growth path were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to understand the fundamental mechanisms of crack growth extension. Furthermore, a hybrid approach was adopted to quantify the contribution of toughening mechanisms to the overall toughness.

Book excerpt: SEM studies were performed on 25 deciduous and permanent teeth from members of seven kindreds with autosomal dominant osteogenesis imperfecta (O.I.). Two families had normal teeth on clinical and radiological examination; five families had blue or brown opalescent teeth with specific radiologic findings. Enamel surfaces and prism organization were normal on all teeth. On fractured surfaces, the dentin tubules of normal teeth from patients with O.I. were evenly distributed and coursed regularly to the dentin-enamel junction. Opalescent teeth had few tubules; those tubules present were narrow, short, and tortuous. Dentin calcification fronts of normal teeth were composed of many mushroom shaped nodules, with regularly spaced openings on their surfaces. Calcification fronts of opalescent teeth were composed of irregularly spaced, small nodules, which varied greatly in size one from another; the nodules lacked tubule openings on their surfaces. The results of this study support the concept that two autosomal dominant O.I. syndromes exist, one in which all individuals with O.I. have normal teeth, and the other in which all with O.I. have blue or brown opalescent teeth.
