Book excerpt: Editor Amory Scann, hides from his job and family in a hotel room in order to write a novella about the northern wilderness, half-tamed by mad trapper Linden, after whom Scann’s hometown is named. But it is interrupted by episodes of the story he tells the chambermaid he hopes to seduce; by another concerning the building of the hotel where he’s hiding; by a dream about his own brush with WWll; and by an I-spy story that happens in the room next to his. Judged Harlow’s masterpiece, serio-comedic Scann is a celebration of our most appealing and hard-won humanity.

Book Computer Safety Reliability and Security

Download or read book Computer Safety Reliability and Security written by Maritta Heisel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-09-09 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theimportanceofsafetyandsecurityisgrowingsteadily.Safetyisaqualityc- racteristic that traditionally has been considered to be important in embedded systems, and security is usually an essential property in business applications. There is certainly a tendency to use software-based solutions in safety-critical applications domains, which increases the importance of safety engineering te- niques. These include modelling and analysis techniques as well as appropriate processes and tools. And it is surely correct that the amount of con?dential data that require protection from unauthorized access is growing. Therefore, security is very important. On the one hand, the traditional motivations for addressing safety and security still exist, and their relevance has improved. On the other hand, safety and security requirements occur increasingly in the same system. At present, many software-based systems interact with technical equipment and they communicate, e.g., with users and other systems. Future systems will more and more interact with many other entities (technical systems, people, the en- ronment). In this situation, security problems may cause safety-related failures. It is thus necessary to address safety and security. It is furthermore required to take into account the interactions between these two properties.

Book Coyote Country

Download or read book Coyote Country written by Arnold E. Davidson and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For most North Americans--Canadians as well as Americans--the term "Western" evokes images of the frontier, brave sheriffs and ruthless outlaws, good cowboys and bad Indians. As Arnold E. Davidson shows in this groundbreaking study, a number of Canada's most interesting and experimental Western writers parody, reverse, or otherwise defuse the paraphernalia of the classic U.S. Western. Lacking both a real and imagined frontier--Canadian settlers rode trains into the new territory, already policed by Mounties--the writers of Canadian Westerns were set a different task from their American counterparts and were subsequently freed to create some of the most complex and engrossing fiction yet produced in Canada. Davidson details the evolution of the U.S. and Canadian Western forms, tracing the divergence between the two as Canadian writers responded to their unique historical circumstances by reinventing the West as well as the Western and establishing a new literary landscape where author and reader could work out new possibilities of being. Surveying a range of texts by Canada's most innovative writers, with special attention to women writers and Native stories of Coyote, he provides close readings of novels by Howard O'Hagan, Sheila Watson, Robert Kroetsch, Aritha van Herk, Anne Cameron, Peter Such, W. O. Mitchell, Beatrice Culleton, and Thomas King. A unique study, Coyote Country offers at one and the same time a theory of Canadian Western fiction, a history of crosscultural paradigms of the West as manifested in novels, and an intensive reading of some of Canada's best literature.
