This book was released on 2017 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The North Fork and the South Fork of the Skagit River were navigated by those searching for gold and land in the 1870s. Flooding became a deterrent for many, but those who stayed discovered an abundance of fertile soil and natural resources. Scandinavian immigrants, predominantly Norwegian, came to settle in the area, some with their families, and worked in logging and in farming. As the population grew, small towns and businesses were soon established. Skagit City and Fir were located on Fir Island; Conway and Milltown were located east of the island. In 1914, a bridge connected the island to the mainland, replacing the ferry at Mann's Landing. After many floods, the removal of logjams, and the arrival of the Great Northern Railroad, Mount Vernon began to prosper upriver, and the little towns began to disappear. Today, Fir Island and Conway are destinations for tourists who come to see snow geese and trumpeter swans during migration. Farmers continue to work the soil, and many descendants of pioneers still remain.

Book excerpt: World-famous guide and instructor Henrik Mortensen's version of Scandinavian casting was designed to catch fish no matter where the caster is on the river—it is the most adaptable and flexible casting technique, giving the flyfisher the ability to handle any situation he encounters effortlessly. Mortensen shares the essentials of fly casting with single- and double-handed rods in the Scandinavian tradition, beginning with the basic technique of the overhead cast. An explanation of the physics of the proper cast—and how the rod, line, leader, and fly work as a balanced unit—tell how Scandinavian casting makes it a pleasure to cast and fish. The author covers the tried-and-true knots that are best for this style of casting and how to add the single and double haul to your casts.

Published in conjunction with the Swedish Council of America, Touring Swedish America is the comprehensive guide to historic towns, homes, and churches erected during the mass Swedish migration beginning in 1840s, as well as the art, architecture, schools, hospitals, businesses, museums, and gardens still in use today. Book Experiences in a Promised Land

Download or read book Experiences in a Promised Land written by G. Thomas Edwards and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 1986 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practically since the turn of the century, the Northwest has been a region of paradoxes. Women, who in Washington had acquired suffrage and lost it in the 1880s, regained it and later elected a woman mayor of Seattle. Exploitation of workers, despite, or perhaps because of, abundance has been extreme-- and has engendered some of America's most radical labor movements. Both racial backlash and enlightened reforms characterize the region.
