Book excerpt: LGBT mystery. I assumed the worst I’d have to endure at a boring birthday party was cheap champagne and dull conversation. Murder never crossed my mind. After three months of struggling to fit into the small town of Rainy Dale, Texas, Maxwell Thornton is once again thrown into the middle of a murder investigation. While attending Mayor Penelope Granger’s birthday party, he and Royce are witnesses to the cold-blooded murder of her father. Seeing as he’s sheriff, Royce has no choice but to get involved in solving the murder, but he’d prefer Maxwell stay at a safe distance. Maxwell would prefer that too, but when an attempt in made on his life, he’s unwillingly sucked into the case. When Maxwell moved to Rainy Dale, he’d hoped for a new beginning. But after two attempts on his life, and his unnerving emotional attachment to Royce, more and more Maxwell wonders if staying in Rainy Dale is the logical choice. Perhaps it’s time to run back to Los Angeles, where he can keep his body, and his heart, safe.

Book The Psychopath Whisperer

Download or read book The Psychopath Whisperer written by Kent A. Kiehl, PhD and published by Crown. This book was released on 2014-04-22 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compelling journey into the science and behavior of psychopaths, written by the leading scientist in the field of criminal psychopathy. We know of psychopaths from chilling headlines and stories in the news and movies—from Ted Bundy and John Wayne Gacy, to Hannibal Lecter and Dexter Morgan. As Dr. Kent Kiehl shows, psychopaths can be identified by a checklist of symptoms that includes pathological lying; lack of empathy, guilt, and remorse; grandiose sense of self-worth; manipulation; and failure to accept one’s actions. But why do psychopaths behave the way they do? Is it the result of their environment— how they were raised—or is there a genetic component to their lack of conscience? This is the question Kiehl, a protégé of famed psychopath researcher Dr. Robert Hare, was determined to answer as he began his career twenty years ago. To aid in his quest to unravel the psychopathic mind, Kiehl created the first mobile functional MRI scanner to study psychopaths in prison populations. The brains of more than five hundred psychopaths and three thousand other offenders have been scanned by Kiehl’s laboratory—the world’s largest forensic neuroscience repository of its kind. Over the course of The Psychopath Whisperer, we follow the scientific bread crumbs that Kiehl uncovered to show that the key brain structures that correspond with emotional engagement and reactions are diminished in psychopaths, offering new clues to how to predict and treat the disorder. In The Psychopath Whisperer, Kiehl describes in fascinating detail his years working with psychopaths and studying their thought processes— from the remorseless serial killers he meets with behind bars to children whose behavior and personality traits exhibit the early warning signs of psychopathy. Less than 1 percent of the general population meets the criteria for psychopathy. But psychopaths account for a vastly outsized proportion of violent crimes. And as Kiehl shows, many who aren’t psychopaths exhibit some of the behaviors and traits associated with the condition. What do you do if you discover your roommate, or boss, or the person you are dating has traits that define a psychopath? And what does having a diminished limbic region of the brain mean for how the legal system approaches crimes committed by psychopaths? A compelling narrative of cutting-edge science, The Psychopath Whisperer will open your eyes on a fascinating but little understood world, with startling implications for society, the law, and our personal lives.

Download or read book Without Conscience written by Robert D. Hare and published by Guilford Press. This book was released on 2011-09-20 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most people are both repelled and intrigued by the images of cold-blooded, conscienceless murderers that increasingly populate our movies, television programs, and newspaper headlines. With their flagrant criminal violation of society's rules, serial killers like Ted Bundy and John Wayne Gacy are among the most dramatic examples of the psychopath. Individuals with this personality disorder are fully aware of the consequences of their actions and know the difference between right and wrong, yet they are terrifyingly self-centered, remorseless, and unable to care about the feelings of others. Perhaps most frightening, they often seem completely normal to unsuspecting targets--and they do not always ply their trade by killing. Presenting a compelling portrait of these dangerous men and women based on 25 years of distinguished scientific research, Dr. Robert D. Hare vividly describes a world of con artists, hustlers, rapists, and other predators who charm, lie, and manipulate their way through life. Are psychopaths mad, or simply bad? How can they be recognized? And how can we protect ourselves? This book provides solid information and surprising insights for anyone seeking to understand this devastating condition.

Book The Psychopath Inside

Download or read book The Psychopath Inside written by James Fallon and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2014-10-28 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Compelling, essential reading for understanding the underpinnings of psychopathy.” — M. E. Thomas, author of Confessions of a Sociopath For his first fifty-eight years, James Fallon was by all appearances a normal guy. A successful neuroscientist and professor, he’d been raised in a loving family, married his high school sweetheart, and had three kids and lots of friends. Then he learned a shocking truth that would not only disrupt his personal and professional life, but would lead him to question the very nature of his own identity. While researching serial killers, he uncovered a pattern in their brain scans that helped explain their cold and violent behavior. Astonishingly, his own scan matched that pattern. And a few months later he learned that he was descended from a long line of murderers. Fallon set out to reconcile the truth about his own brain with everything he knew as a scientist about the mind, behavior, and personality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is estimated that psychopaths make up about 1 percent of the general population. They do everything that a normal person does, with the exception that they possess no empathy and/or conscience toward others, are highly skilled in the art of manipulation, and they have no compunction using others to get what they want and are masters at it. This book is intended for mental health professionals who want to know more about a phenomenon that is both fascinating and scary and who seek to gain information about a topic that, thus far, has received scant attention from researchers. The authors focus on a number of different areas concerning subclinical psychopathy, with some chapters being more technical than others primarily due to the nature of the data reported. Chapters include: An Introduction to Subclinical Psychopathy; A Short History of Psychopathy; What is Subclinical Psychopathy?; The Psychopathic Brain; Child and Adolescent Psychopaths; Interpersonal Relationships; Personality Factors—How to Detect Psychopaths; Treatment for Psychopathy; and How to Deal with the Psychopath in Your Life. While the book is not a treatise on subclinical psychopathy, after reading it, readers will walk away with a better understanding of the subject.

Book The 10 Worst Psychopaths

Download or read book The 10 Worst Psychopaths written by Victor McQueen and published by Arcturus Editions. This book was released on 2016-10-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Often, the term 'psychopath' tends to be equated with violent and deranged criminality, but true psychopaths are very different from the way they are portrayed in film or on television. They are aware of the difference between right and wrong: they simply choose to ignore anything that prevents them getting what they want. Real-life psychopaths are not 'mad' but 'bad', but they appear on the surface to be entirely 'normal'. One of the pioneers of the modern research effort was Dr. Robert Hare, who developed the Psychopathy Check List Revised (PCL-R) in an attempt to describe the degree of psychopathy an individual displays. The clusters of personality traits and socially-deviant behaviours outlined in the check-list are separated into four types: interpersonal, affective, lifestyle and anti-social. The 10 Worst Psychopaths looks at history's most notorious and infamous psychopaths, and seeks to show how their life stories illustrate the classic psychopathic personality traits. Though all morally despicable, many of these individuals were charming, popular and charismatic. This is part of our enduring fascination with the psychopath: they are capable of extraordinary inhuman acts, and yet they appear on the surface to be entirely 'normal'. It is only once you know what to look for that the psychopathy beneath the cunning mask becomes obvious. Chillingly, psychopaths are usually the person you would least suspect.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mask of Sanity: An Attempt to Clarify Some Issues About the So-Called Psychopathic Personality is a foundational work on the nature and diagnosis of psychopathy by Dr. Harvey M. Cleckley. This landmark work explores the psychopath's ability to hide their illness and function "normally" in public when it serves their ends. This ability to slip on the "mask" makes identification and diagnoses of these individuals extremely difficult. Dr. Hervey M. Cleckley (1903-1984) was a professor of psychiatry and neurology at the University of Georgia School of Medicine. As the psychiatric consultant at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Augusta and the Camp Gordon Army Hospital, he had ample opportunities to observe and treat men suffering from war-related trauma like post-traumatic stress disorder. He wrote several books on psychiatry, including The Three Faces of Eve with Dr. Corbett H. Thigpen. This book is a case study on a patient with a rare diagnosis of multiple personality disorder. It was later made into a film of the same name. Actress Joanne Woodward won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of Eve's three personalities. Dr. Cleckley was also a consultant for the prosecution in the 1979 trial of Ted Bundy. Dr. Cleckley's best-known work is The Mask of Sanity, first published in 1941. This printing is the second edition, published in 1950. The work was revised several times across four decades, as additional research and new subjects increased his knowledge of the subject. The title refers to the mask that the psychopathic personality is able to apply in everyday situations, in order to achieve their ends or get themselves out of trouble. While other manifestations of mental illness are uncontrollable and involuntary, the psychopath is able to conceal theirs when it suits their purpose. To add to the complication, many people in the beginning stages of their psychosis behave normally most of the time, only occasionally exhibiting symptoms of aberrant behavior. Identifying the difference between the occasional bout of poor judgment and a personality disorder is strikingly difficult in these early stages. After all, writes Cleckley, "Do we not...have to admit that all of us behave at times with something short of rationality and good judgment?" Yet another difficulty arises among psychiatrists in the definition and classification of the term "psychopath." Definitions are inconsistent across practices, and they do not coincide with the way the term is used in clinical practice. With a broad definition and no consistency in its use, how are psychiatrists to identify and treat psychopaths? A large part of the book consists of the dramatic stories of 13 individuals that Cleckley had the opportunity to study in his clinical work. Through these stories, he explores the characteristics that are shared among psychopaths. He also describes six "incomplete manifestations of the disorder," assigning each an archetype such as the Businessman, the Gentleman, or the Scientist. To aid in the identification of the pathology, he created a profile of 16 characteristics of the psychopath. These include behaviors like "lack of remorse or shame" and "superficial charm." Dr. Cleckley theorized that there are more undiagnosed psychopaths than doctors had ever known, and hoped that this work would help them to be more easily identified. The Mask of Sanity is one of the most influential works on psychopathy of the 20th century. While it does not include treatment recommendations, it has served as a foundation for the therapies and behavioral skills training now used to treat the disorder.
