Book excerpt: The overarching objective of this dissertation was to improve our knowledge of the relationship between seascape heterogeneity and diversity of stony coral assemblages across spatial scales. Coral communities on patch reefs in three regions of the Caribbean were used as a model system to investigating this relationship because patch reef heterogeneity could be readily quantified within the seascape using remote sensing and image analysis techniques. I began with a theoretical approach, exploring the origins of observed species diversity among coral communities at increasing spatial scales. Hierarchical sampling and null models revealed that coral diversity was governed by non-random processes at local- (10s of meters) and meso- (100s of m) scales. Spatial autocorrelation and reef heterogeneity were then investigated as potential mechanistic drivers of these non-random diversity patterns. I found limited support for spatial drivers. However, beta diversity was significantly correlated to metrics of reef heterogeneity (measured as reef size, spatial configuration, and complexity), indicating that differences in reef heterogeneity were making a disproportionate contribution to the overall coral community diversity. The relationship between corals and reef heterogeneity was found to be both scale-dependent and region dependent. This theoretical approach was followed by a manipulative approach using an existing artificial patch reef array to experimentally test the influence of reef spatial configuration and topographical complexity on local diversity. Corals were most sensitive to reef size and secondarily reef configuration within the seascape. Unlike reef fishes, reef complexity did not emerge as a strong predictor of the coral community composition in either the observational data or the experimental manipulation. These observational and experimental explorations of the relationship between corals and habitat reveal that intra-habitat variability (i.e. differences between patch reefs) can influence the diversity and abundance of corals. I then focused on applying this improved theoretical understanding towards improving coral management efforts. I present a new methodology to assess the efficacy of marine reserve effects by controlling for natural seascape variation within and beyond the reserve boundary, and I quantified the bias of underestimating coral diversity by using conventional reef monitoring protocols that ignore differences in reef size. Book excerpt: Coral recruitment in Southeast Florida is being outpaced by mortality, resulting in population declines in many species. Identifying the coral species most likely to recruit and survive on Southeast Florida reefs and evaluating spatial variation in recruitment and survivorship is crucial for managing decreasing coral populations. This study focuses on 12 sites in Broward and Miami-Dade counties that have served as long-term stations for monitoring adult coral cover and demographics. At each site, thirty-two 225cm2 grooved terracotta settlement tiles were attached to the substrate in winter of 2015 and retrieved in winter of 2016 to evaluate scleractinian and octocoral recruitment rates. Thirty-two corresponding 0.25 m2 quadrats were surveyed in situ for coralsconditions, such as Poritidae, Siderastreidae, and Octocorallia, exhibit signs of recruitment success and/or juvenile survivorship. Scleractinian recruitment was not variable spatially, but juvenile densities varied on site-level spatial scales, suggesting that differential survivorship structures adult scleractinian communities. This study will inform reef management and restoration efforts within Southeast Florida by identifying sites and species with potential to recover from disturbance through natural recruitment processes.

In this thesis, I examine the impact of local stressors on the spatial variability of coral reef fish community composition by modeling the !-diversity of 35 islands across the Pacific Ocean that are characterized by either low or high human disturbance. By examining !-diversity across three spatial scales (within island, within island group, and across island group), and using null models to control for differences in alpha-diversity or abundance, I reveal previously undocumented effects of human disturbance on coral reef fish assemblages. At all scales, human disturbances alter !-diversity. At the largest-scale, islands with high human disturbance have lower incidence- and abundance-based !-diversity, consistent with biotic homogenization. This pattern was driven by both species with high and low abundances that differed across islands. At the smaller two scales (within islands or island groups), the presence of low abundance species is more variable on islands with high human disturbance (manifest in greater incidence-based !-diversity), but these islands have lower abundance-based !- diversity driven by moderately abundant and widespread species. Multivariate techniques show that islands with high human disturbance have a weaker species-environment relationship, and as such, I suggest that homogenization of coral reef fish assemblages by human disturbances is resulting in greater stochasticity of species composition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Caribbean, local and global stressors have driven significant declines in scleractinian coral cover up to 80% in only three decades. Following these declines, phase shifts in benthic community composition have been reported. Shifts towards macroalgal dominance has been the most widely observed case, however, shifts towards octocoral and sponge dominance have also been reported. In Florida, USA, the Florida Reef Tract is an extensive barrier reef system that contains diverse assemblages of corals, sponges, fish, and other taxa. The Southeast Florida Reef Tract (SEFRT) within the Southeast Florida Coral Reef Conservation Area is the northern portion of this system and lies adjacent to the highly urbanized and populated South Florida coastline. Long-term decreases in stony coral cover have been reported for this region, as well as more recent and drastic changes resulting from the Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease outbreak. With this recent significant loss in stony corals, octocorals have become a more abundant constituent of the SEFRT. Although multiple studies highlight the community composition of local stony corals as well as spatial and temporal changes in their cover, the same has yet to be investigated for the octocoral community. This study investigates spatial and temporal trends in octocoral density, community composition, colony height, and colony condition (i.e. bleaching and disease) from 2013-2018 on the SEFRT. Analyses indicate an increase in density and a decrease in colony height throughout the study period. Both bleaching and disease prevalence remained very low, likely at background levels, during a time period when high levels of bleaching and disease were reported in the stony coral community. Finally, significant spatial variation of the community was observed throughout the SEFRT as density, colony height, and community composition of the outer reef was different from both the inner and middle reefs. These changes do not appear to correlate with events that resulted in the significant decline of stony corals (e.g. thermal anomalies, disease outbreak), suggesting that its drivers may not be similarly impacting the octocoral community. Evidence suggests that this high-latitude reef system can support a high-density octocoral community, but significant spatial variation in density and composition exists. With reefs experiencing dramatic phase shifts, it is imperative to understand the contribution of seemingly resistant organisms, like octocorals, to reef community dynamics.

Book excerpt: A major goal in ecology is to understand how processes observed on single habitat patches "scale up" to predict population- or metapopulation-scale dynamics. This issue is especially critical for marine species with widely-dispersing, planktonic larvae. I addressed this question by investigating the behavior, growth, and mortality of juvenile bluehead wrasse, bifasciatum, a small planktivore, on reefs around the Caribbean island of St. Croix. At a small spatial scale (centimeters), bluehead wrasse enjoyed safety-in-numbers: per-capita mortality was substantially lower in larger groups. This effect did not scale up, however, and mortality was density-dependent at the spatial scale of entire reefs (Chapter 1). The relative safety of groups may explain why settlers occurred in groups more often than expected by chance, but group sizes may be limited by competition for prey. Grouped fish spent more time foraging than solitary fish, but dietary and otolith analyses revealed that grouped fish obtained the same number of prey and grow slower than solitary fish despite foraging more. Behavior and growth were also affected by the local abundance of copepod prey, which varied consistently across reefs (Chapter 2). Of even greater interest is spatial variation in the recruitment and abundance of a major wrasse predator, which closely followed the spatial pattern of bluehead wrasse recruitment. Presumably this occurred because larvae of both species are affected by the same oceanographic forces. This spatial correlation in recruitment is noteworthy because predator density strongly affected the form and intensity of density-dependent mortality among recently settled wrasse (Chapter 3). Since the majority of marine metapopulation models assume that density dependence is spatially homogenous, models incorporating spatially correlated settlement of predators and their prey produce strikingly different results. Populations with consistently low larval settlement experience much weaker density-dependence and are consequently far more important to the persistence of the metapopulation than high-settlement, high-predation populations (Chapter 4). Far from supporting the idea that small-scale processes scale up, I have identified several new potential sources of large-scale, oceanographically-driven variability that may affect the fate of individual fish and entire metapopulations.
