Book Scalar Top Quark as the Next to Lightest Supersymmetric Particle

Download or read book Scalar Top Quark as the Next to Lightest Supersymmetric Particle written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We study phenomenologically the scenario in which the scalar top quark is lighter than any other standard supersymmetric partner and also lighter than the top quark, so that it decays to the gravitino via {tilde t} --> Wb{tilde G}. In this case, scalar top quark events would seem to be very difficult to separate from top quark pair production. However, we show that, even at a hadron collider, it is possible to distinguish these two reactions. We show also that the longitudinal polarization of the final W gives insight into the scalar top and wino/Higgsino mixing parameters.

Book excerpt: "This thesis presents a search for Supersymmetry carried out in a particular scenario arising from the Gauge Mediated Supersymmetry breaking mechanism that assumes a massless gravitino as lightest supersymmetric particle, a scalar tau lepton as next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle and the top squark as the lightest among the quark superpartners. The analysis is performed using the data collected by ATLAS at a centre-of-mass energy √s = 8 TeV during 2012 data taking, for a total of 20.3 fb−1 of integrated luminosity of proton-proton collisions. Scalar top quark candidates are searched for in events with either two light leptons, one hadronically decaying tau and one light lepton or two hadronically decaying taus in the final state. No significant excess over the Standard Model expectation is found and the results are interpreted as 95% confidence lower limits not top squark and scalar tau masses. Depending on the scalar tau mass, lower limits between 490 and 650 GeV are placed on the top squark mass within the model considered. This thesis presents also the results of the track-based alignment of the ATLAS Inner Detector during 2015 data taking campaign and the characterisation of the mechanical deformation of the Insertable B-Layer as function of the operating temperature."--Samenvatting auteur.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis focuses on searches for squarks with the ATLAS detector in "compressed" scenarios where the scalar top is very close in mass to the lightest supersymmetric particle. These models are theoretically appealing because the presence of a quasi-degenerate scalar top enhances the self-annihilation cross-section of the lightest supersymmetric particle, acting therefore as a regulator of the dark matter relic density. Two main analyses are presented: the first is a search for scalar tops decaying to charm quarks. The identification of jets originating from the charm quark is very challenging due to its short lifetime. The calibration of tools for charm-tagging has paved the way to measuring the decay of the Higgs boson to pairs of charm quarks. The second analysis presented is the development of a novel technique for reconstructing low momentum b-hadrons. This tool has enabled the ATLAS collaboration to explore topologies that were previously inaccessible.

Book Search for Scalar Top Quarks and Higgsino Like Neutralinos

Download or read book Search for Scalar Top Quarks and Higgsino Like Neutralinos written by Takuya Nobe and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-11-30 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reports a search for theoretically natural supersymmetry (SUSY) at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The data collected with the ATLAS detector in 2012 corresponding to 20 /fb of an integrated luminosity have been analyzed for stop pair production in proton–proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in the scenario of the higgsino-like neutralino. The author focuses on stop decaying into a bottom quark and chargino. In the scenario of the higgsino-like neutralino, the mass difference between charginos and neutralinos (Δm) is expected to be small, and observable final-state particles are likely to have low-momentum (soft). The author develops a dedicated analysis with a soft lepton as a probe of particles from chargino decay, which suppresses the large amount of backgrounds. As a result of the analysis, no significant SUSY signal is observed. The 95% confidence-level exclusion limits are set to masses of stop and neutralino assuming Δm = 20 GeV. The region with ΔM (the mass difference between stop and neutralino) 70 GeV is excluded for the first time at stop mass of less than 210 GeV. The author also excludes the signals with ΔM 120 GeV up to 600 GeV of stop mass with neutralino mass of less than 280 GeV. The author clearly shows very few remaining parameter spaces for light stop (e.g., topology of stop decay is extremely similar to the SM top quark) by combining his results and previous ATLAS analyses. His results provide a strong constraint to searches for new physics in the future.

Book Search for Pair Production of Scalar Top Quarks in Jets and Missing Transverse Energy Channel with the D0 Detector

Download or read book Search for Pair Production of Scalar Top Quarks in Jets and Missing Transverse Energy Channel with the D0 Detector written by Mansoora Shamim and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation describes a search for the pair production of scalar top quarks, tilde[subscript] 1, using a luminosity of 995 pb[superscript-1] of data collected in p[bar over]p collisions with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider at a center-of-mass energy sqrt[s] = 1.96 TeV. Both scalar top quarks are assumed to decay into a charm quark and a neutralino, [tilde chi superscript 0 subscript 1] where [(tilde chi superscript 0 subscript 1)] is the lightest supersymmetric particle. This leads to a final state with two acoplanar charm jets and missing transverse energy. The yield of such events in data is found to be consistent with the expectations from known standard model processes. Sets of tilde [subscript 1] and tilde chi [superscript 0 subscript 1] masses are excluded at the 95% confidence level that substantially extend the domain excluded by previous searches. With the theoretical uncertainty on the pair production cross section taken into account, the largest limit for m[subscript tilde subscript 1] is m[subscript tilde chi subscript 1> 150 GeV, for m [subscript tilde chi negative 0 subscript 1]= 65 GeV.

This book was released on 2008 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation describes a search for the pair production of scalar top quarks, {tilde t}1, using a luminosity of 995 pb−1 of data collected in p{bar p} collisions with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider at a center-of-mass energy (square root)s = 1.96 TeV. Both scalar top quarks are assumed to decay into a charm quark and a neutralino, {tilde {chi}}1°, where {tilde {chi}}1° is the lightest supersymmetric particle. This leads to a final state with two acoplanar charm jets and missing transverse energy. The yield of such events in data is found to be consistent with the expectations from known standard model processes. Sets of {tilde t}1 and {tilde {chi}}1° masses are excluded at the 95% confidence level that substantially extend the domain excluded by previous searches. With the theoretical uncertainty on the {tilde t}1 pair production cross section taken into account, the largest limit for m{sub {tilde t}1} is m{sub {tilde t}1}> 150 GeV, for m{sub {tilde {chi}}1°} = 65 GeV.

Book Searches for Supersymmetric Particles in Final States with Multiple Top and Bottom Quarks with the Atlas Detector

Download or read book Searches for Supersymmetric Particles in Final States with Multiple Top and Bottom Quarks with the Atlas Detector written by Chiara Rizzi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This PhD thesis documents two of the highest-profile searches for supersymmetry performed at the ATLAS experiment using up to 80/fb of proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV delivered by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) during its Run 2 (2015-2018). The signals of interest feature a high multiplicity of jets originating from the hadronisation of b-quarks and large missing transverse momentum, which constitutes one of the most promising final state signatures for discovery of new phenomena at the LHC. The first search is focused on the strong production of a pair of gluinos, with each gluino decaying into a neutralino and a top-antitop-quark pair or a bottom-antibottom-quark pair. The second search targets the pair production of higgsinos, with each higgsino decaying into a gravitino and a Higgs boson, which in turn is required to decay into a bottom-antibottom-quark pair. Both searches employ state-of-the-art experimental techniques and analysis strategies at the LHC, resulting in some of the most restrictive bounds available to date on the masses of the gluino, neutralino, and higgsino in the context of the models explored.

Download or read book A Search for the Lightest Supersymmetric Partner of the Top Quark at written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We report the result of a search for the pair production of the lightest supersymmetric partner of the top quark ({tilde t}1) in 5.4 ± 0.3 fb−1 of data from the D0 detector at a p{bar p} center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The scalar top quarks are assumed to decay into a b quark, a charged lepton and a scalar neutrino ({tilde {nu}}), and the search is performed in the electron plus muon final state. No significant excess of events above the standard model prediction is detected and new exclusion limits at the 95% C.L. are set for a portion of the (m{sub {tilde t}1}, m{sub {tilde {nu}}}) mass plane.

This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zusammenfassung: The elementary particles composing matter and their interactions are described by the Standard Model of particle physics. The Standard Model of particle physics enabled predictions that were experimentally verified and has been confirmed throughout the past decades by data. Nevertheless, there are several theoretical reasons not to consider it as the ultimate theory. The strongest motivation to expect Physics beyond the Standard Model is the hierarchy problem. The radiative corrections to the mass of the Higgs boson grow quadratically with the square of the energy scale at which the Standard Model is considered to be valid. As a result, the parameters of the Standard Model need to be fine-tuned in order for the mass of the Higgs boson to acquire the value experimentally measured, despite the possibly large corrections.Supersymmetry is a promising theory extending the Standard Model which solves many of its shortcomings, including the hierarchy problem. Supersymmetry postulates a new fermion-boson symmetry resulting in the introduction of new particles, called superpartners, with the same quantum numbers and masses as the Standard Model particles, except for the spin, differing by half a unit. This new symmetry enables a cancellation of the radiative corrections due to the Standard Model particles with the corrections due to the newly introduced superpartners, contributing with opposite sign. Since no superpartners with the same mass as the Standard Model particles have been observed, Supersymmetry must be broken to allow the superpartners to have a mass different from the mass of the corresponding Standard Model particles. In the minimal version of Supersymmetry in terms of new particles, the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, the hierarchy problem can still be solved with a moderate amount of fine-tuning if the masses of at least some of the superpartners are at the TeV energy scale. The conservation of a new multiplicative quantum number, the R-parity, can be assumed to prevent phenomena in contrast with experimental evidences, as the proton decay. Superpartners have R-parity -1, and Standard Model particles R-parity +1. If the conservation of R-parity is assumed, in collider experiments supersymmetric particles can only be produced in even numbers (usually two), and the lightest supersymmetric particles (LSP, usually taken to be the neutralino), is stable. The LHC (Large Hadron Collider), is a hadron collider able to accelerate protons to unprecedented energies. Between 2010 and 2012 it operated at a centre-of-mass energy of the proton-proton collisions of 7 and 8 TeV.Its general-purpose experiments, ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC Apparatus) and CMS (Compact Muon Spectrometer) collected data corresponding to about 5 $fb^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV and 20 $fb^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV. The LHC and its experiments have been built with the main motivations of searching for the Higgs boson, discovered by the ATLAS and CMS experiments in 2012, and searching for signals of Supersymmetry. There are strong theoretical reasons to expect the supersymmetric particles to lie at the TeV energy scale, which would make them accessible at the LHC.In the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, the lightest superpartner of the top quark, light stop is very likely to be lighter than the superpartners of the other quarks. This thesis focuses on the search for direct stop pair production with the data collected by the ATLAS experiment. Two analyses have been performed, addressing different final states and decay modes. The first analysis targets stop masses close to the mass of the top quark, ideal to solve the hierarchy problem. The mass spectrum assumed is such that m(stop)

Download or read book Search for the Lightest Scalar Top Quark in Events with Two Leptons in P Anti p Collisions at S written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data collected by the D0 detector at a p{bar p} center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider have been used to search for pair production of the lightest supersymmetric partner of the top quark decaying into bl{bar {nu}}. The search is performed in the ll′ = e? and?? final states. No evidence for this process has been found in data samples of approximately 400 pb−1. The domain in the [M({bar t}1), M({bar {nu}})] plane excluded at the 95% C.L. is substantially extended by this search.
