Wireless networks suffer from low bandwidth due to high rates of interference and inherent limitations of the medium. Mobility also increases the bandwidth used for control packets. To conserve on precious bandwidth, routing protocols should generate as few updates as possible. In this dissertation, we propose distance vector solutions to ad-hoc routing because unlike existing routing solutions our solutions do not use sequence numbers and thus are not prone to inefficient or wrong behavior in the presence of node failures. First, we introduce ROAM, the first protocol to correctly tackle the "searching to infinity" problem found in on-demand routing protocols. ROAM can be used in networks with low rates of topology changes because it required reliable updates. Next, we describe two protocols DST (on-demand) and BEST (table-driven) for networks with high rates of topology change. Simulation experiments carried out in two different simulation packages show that these protocols perform an order of magnitude better than representative on-demand and table-driven routing solutions for ad-hoc networks. Finally, we introduce MDST, an on-demand protocol that extends the source tracing algorithm used in DST to create and maintain multiple paths in an ad-hoc wireless network. Multipath routing can be used in ad hoc networks to achieve greater resilience to route failures and better end-to-end delays. Multipath routing is also essential when using QoS metrics like delay in order to avoid route oscillation. We show that multiple paths that are node disjoint and loop free can be maintained with less overhead than DST. Further, these multiple paths decrease the delay of packet delivery and increase the throughput of the network.

Book excerpt: This dissertation considers the problem of scaling ad hoc wireless networks now being applied to urban mesh and sensor networks scenarios. Ad hoc networks involve multi-hop communication which has inherent scaling problems in that throughput per node drops as the square root of the number of nodes in the network. We investigate mechanisms for improving performance and scalability of multi-hop wireless networks, with focus on system architecture and routing protocol aspects. First we propose a generalized multi-tier hierarchical hybrid network with three tiers of radio nodes: low-power end-user mobile nodes (MN) at the lowest tier, higher power radio forwarding nodes (FN) that support multi-hop routing at intermediate level, and wired access points (AP) at the highest level. We present an analytical model for the capacity of the proposed network and identify conditions on transmission range and node density for scalability to be maintained. From the derived upper and lower bounds, it is shown that the low-tier capacity increases linearly with the number of FN's, and that the high-tier capacity grows linearly with the number of AP's in the scaling region. The analytically obtained capacity results are validated with detailed system simulations for dense network scenarios. The simulation study also examines the allocation of separate channels to avoid the increased protocol overhead which arises in the single channel case. A heuristic distributed channel assignment algorithm is proposed to achieve conflict-free transmissions in the network. Next, we investigate cross-layer adaptive routing as another type of scaling mechanism. An adaptive routing framework, which allows introduction of adjustable parameters and programmable routing modules, is described. The proposed framework can support various cross-layer mechanisms including those based on integrated routing metrics that incorporate PHY and MAC information. We investigate a PHY/MAC aware routing metric (PARMA) which incorporates physical layer link speed and MAC congestion. Design and implementation of PARMA are outlined, and simulation results for typical multi-rate 802.11 ad hoc network scenarios show that PARMA helps improve throughput and decrease congestion by selecting paths with high bit-rate links while avoiding MAC congestion areas.

They do not have any pre-existing network infrastructure and are characterized by constantly changing topology, limited battery power and bandwidth. Typical applications of such networks are battlefield networks, medical relief during natural calamities or disasters, conference room networking, and intra-vehicular communications. Routing packets in an ad-hoc network is a challenge because of the mobile nature of the nodes and the constantly changing topology. In ad hoc networks, each mobile node functions as a router, forwarding packets, establishing routes and helping each other in maintaining the network. A novel scalable routing protocol SLURP (Scalable Location Updated-based Routing Protocol) addresses these issues of ad hoc networks routing. The protocol is based on a location management strategy, which keeps the routing overhead to a minimum. In this thesis we compare the protocol against an existing set of multi-hop ad hoc network routing protocols that cover a range of design choices: DSDV, TORA, DSR, and AODV. We implemented SLURP in the network simulator ns-2, with the necessary wireless extensions. Experiments were run to simulate changes in network topology, number of active sources, link connectivity, and speed of motion. The difference in performance and scalability are illustrated.
