Book Diseases of Fruits and Vegetables

Download or read book Diseases of Fruits and Vegetables written by S.A.M.H. Naqvi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-08 with total page 690 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the Horticultural Crops, Fruits and Vegetables (FV) are of primary - portance as the key source of essential components in an adequate and balanced human diet. FV have supported largely the daily food requirement of mankind since ages and even before man learned to grow cereal crops systematically. Over the years, growing FV has been the mainstay of rural economy and has emerged as an indispensable part of agriculture world over, offering farmers a wide range of crops in varied topography and climate. In certain parts of the world, FV are the major dietary staple. Apart from being a rich source of vitamins and minerals, this sector also contributes significantly in economy of the region or the nation. The increased income from per unit area of FV is far ahead and can not be compared with that of cereal crops. A recent survey by the Economist revealed that the world population has - creased by 90 % in the past 40 years while food production has increased only by 25 % per head. With an additional 1. 5 billion mouth to feed by 2020, farmers worldwide have to produce 39 % more. Looking at the load of the future food requirement, the global increased production of FV during last few years has absorbed the additional food requirement and accordingly the eating habits are also changing and shifting - wards more consumption of these commodities worldwide.

  • Author : Susan Futrell

Download or read book Good Apples written by Susan Futrell and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2017-09-01 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apples are so ordinary and so ubiquitous that we often take them for granted. Yet it is surprisingly challenging to grow and sell such a common fruit. In fact, producing diverse, tasty apples for the market requires almost as much ingenuity and interdependence as building and maintaining a vibrant democracy. Understanding the geographic, ecological, and economic forces shaping the choices of apple growers, apple pickers, and apple buyers illuminates what’s at stake in the way we organize our food system. Good Apples is for anyone who wants to go beyond the kitchen and backyard into the orchards, packing sheds, and cold storage rooms; into the laboratories and experiment stations; and into the warehouses, stockrooms, and marketing meetings, to better understand how we as citizens and eaters can sustain the farms that provide food for our communities. Susan Futrell has spent years working in sustainable food distribution, including more than a decade with apple growers. She shows us why sustaining family orchards, like family farms, may be essential to the soul of our nation.

Book Entomology and Pest Management

Download or read book Entomology and Pest Management written by Larry P. Pedigo and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2014-12-22 with total page 820 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pedigo and Rice expertly combine basic and applied entomology in this reader-friendly, pedagogically rich text. Assuming only a background in elementary biology, the authors present the major elements of general entomology before moving on to concepts in insect biology and ecology necessary for understanding insect pest management. Both theory and practice are emphasized as readers explore pertinent topics. The authors discuss pest-management issues—both preventive and curative—as aspects of applied ecology, with solutions considering environmental quality, profitability, and durability. Insect diagnostic boxes with detailed information on distribution, importance, appearance, and life cycles of particular species and groups appear throughout the text. Readers will come away with a comprehensive introduction to applied, sustainable pest management appropriate for whatever commodities they must handle.

Book Natural Polymers Biopolymers Biomaterials and Their Composites Blends and IPNs

Download or read book Natural Polymers Biopolymers Biomaterials and Their Composites Blends and IPNs written by Sabu Thomas and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-07-18 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural Polymers, Biopolymers, Biomaterials, and Their Composites, Blends, and IPNs focuses on the recent advances in natural polymers, biopolymers, biomaterials, and their composites, blends, and IPNs. Biobased polymer blends and composites occupy a unique position in the dynamic world of new biomaterials. The growing need for lubricious coatings and surfaces in medical devices—an outcome of the move from invasive to noninvasive medicines/procedures—is playing a major role in the advancement of biomaterials technology. Natural polymers have attained their cutting-edge technology through various platforms, yet there is a lot of novel information about them that is discussed in the book. This important work covers topics such as chitosan composites for biomedical applications and wastewater treatment, coal biotechnology, biomedical and related applications of second generation polyamidoamines, silk fibers, PEG hydrogels, bamboo fiber reinforced PE composites, jute/polyester composites, magnetic biofoams, and many other interesting aspects of importance to polymer research today.
