Book excerpt: From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of A Legacy of Spies and The Night Manager, now an AMC miniseries With the Cold War fought and won, British spymaster Tim Cranmer accepts early retirement to rural England and a new life with his alluring young mistress, Emma. But when both Emma and Cranmer’s star double agent and lifelong rival, Larry Pettifer, disappear, Cranmer is suddenly on the run, searching for his brilliant protégé, desperately eluding his former colleagues, in a frantic journey across Europe and into the lawless, battered landscapes of Moscow and southern Russia, to save whatever of his life he has left. . . . Praise for Our Game “As thrilling as le Carré gets . . . The novel has the heartstop duplicity of A Perfect Spy and some of the outraged honor of The Night Manager and The Little Drummer Girl.”—The Boston Globe “Furious in action . . . takes us by the neck on page one and never lets go.”—Chicago Sun-Times “Irresistible . . . a sinuous plot, leisurely introduced, whose coils become increasingly constricting. There is crisp, intelligent dialogue, much of it riding an undercurrent of menace. And there is a hero who does not see himself as heroic but who struggles with inner demons as much as with the forces arrayed against him.”—Time “Gripping.”—The Christian Science Monitor

Book excerpt: Under a Watchful Eye by Adam Nevill is a supernatural thriller from the award-winning writer of The Ritual and Last Days. Seb Logan is being watched. He just doesn't know by whom. When the sudden appearance of a dark figure shatters his idyllic coastal life, he soon realizes that the murky past he thought he'd left behind has far from forgotten him. What's more unsettling is the strange atmosphere that engulfs him at every sighting, plunging his mind into a terrifying paranoia. To be a victim without knowing the tormentor. To be despised without knowing the offence caused. To be seen by what nobody else can see. These are the thoughts which plague his every waking moment. Imprisoned by despair, Seb fears his stalker is not working alone, but rather is involved in a wider conspiracy that threatens everything he has worked for. For there are doors in this world that open into unknown places. Places used by the worst kind of people to achieve their own ends. And once his investigation leads him to stray across the line and into mortal danger, he risks becoming another fatality in a long line of victims . . .

Book The Cabinet Maker s Guide to the Entire Construction of Cabinet Work Including Nemeering Marqueterie Buhl Work Mosaic Inlaying and the Working and Polishing of Ivory

Download or read book The Cabinet Maker s Guide to the Entire Construction of Cabinet Work Including Nemeering Marqueterie Buhl Work Mosaic Inlaying and the Working and Polishing of Ivory written by Richard Bitmead and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2021-06-28 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written to supply a want is a phrase now become so hackneyed, that it is only repeated here because no other words mould so well express the purpose of the writer-which is, to place before the trade a book of instruction on Cabinet-making by a London Cabinet-maker. From the fact of the London trade being divided and sub-divided into so many branches-wardrobe makers, pianoforte-case makers, photographic ap- paratus makers, dining-table makers, telegraphic- case makers, sideboard makers, glass-showcase makers, chiffonier makers, looking-glass-frame- makers, mathematical-case makers, dressing-case makers, toilet-table makers, chest-of-drawers makers, etc., etc.-and each one of these branches taking apprentices, it follows as a natural consequence that there are many workmen who are thoroughly efficient only in the branch in which they have been specially trained. It mill frequently happen, from slackness in a particular branch of trade, or from a other causea, that a workman is compelled to turn his hand to another branch, and he then finds that he must place himself under an obligation to others for instruction. By all such workmen this little book will be found of value, as well as by apprentices and country work- men unaccustomed to many of the branches of the trade treated of in these pages amateurs, also, who take delight in the art will find the book of great service and lastly, it is hoped it may prove useful as a work of reference to the trade in general. The information given is based on an experience of twenty-five years as a general Cabinet-maker, and can be relied upon. All necessary instructions for veneering and inlaying in fancy woods, for both flat and shaped surfaces, will be found here and the process of dyeing veneers throughout their entire thickness, so little known to the trade, is also fully treated of, as well as the working and staining of ivory, marqueterie, buhl-work, etc., and the con- struction of various kinds of dining-tables. Many valuable recipes are also given, and much information of a miscellaneous character, as will be seen from a glance through the following Contents.
